The Mist
(2007)

A Fantastic, Truly Scary Ride!
I've been a Stephen King reader since I was about 8. I've read almost everything the man has written. I'm also a HUGE Frank Darabont fan after what he did with SHAWSHANK and GREEN MILE.

It takes a lot to scare me, but this movie really creeped me out. From the moment The Mist rolls in over the lake toward the small town, I was hooked. Thomas Jane is fantastic in this. In fact, the entire cast knocks this one out of the park because of how realistically they play each moment. Never once did I feel like I was watching acting on the screen. Darabont sets a mood of realism with the hand held shots inside the grocery store and the organic suspense that creates.

Darabont has added some elements not found in the King story, but each one of them is spot on. Especially the end. It will leave you sitting in your seat, awe struck.

I can't recommend this film more. The FX are outstanding by Greg Nicotero and Cafe FX. The creatures are great, complex and frightening. The Mist itself becomes a character.

The feeling of dread I got each time a character went into The Mist is such a tribute to how wonderful and masterful this film is.

And finally, Marcia Gay Harden and Toby Jones. Harden's character is so despicable I really began to hate her as the movie went on. But the realism of what unfolds with her, and the group of people stuck in the store, is so fantastic. And Toby Jones as Ollie was my second favorite behind Jane's character. Jones looks like he would be the quiet type, but he quickly becomes the audience favorite.

See this movie ASAP. And a special thanks again to Frank Darabont, Greg Nicotero, AICN and the Alamo Drafthouse for bringing this awesome film to Austin for us to see FIRST!!!!!

No, It Isn't A Masterful Meditation On... Anything
**Possible Spoilers** I saw this in Austin two days ago, and I honestly have to say it was a waste of time. I'm not one to only like one genre, or not be able to open my mind to abstract vision, but this film has no answers to any questions brought up during the course of the razor thin narrative. The director assured us the film should be interpreted by the viewer, but how can one do this if there is little or nothing to interpret? Cyndi Williams certainly delivers a powerful performance, but it's hard to say for what. The story, very, very thin story, is about Williams' middle-aged housewife who suffers visions with her migraines and one day crashes her car which pushes her to fly out to NYC for no reason except to find the non-descript warehouse/loft room she sees in her migraine episodes.

The camera work is amateur and not worth noting. The music is well done, as is the sound design, bu to what purpose is still a mystery to me. I usually feel when a filmmaker does not give ANY concrete answers or motivations for character development or actions it is a cop out. This is no different. You walk away not feeling one bit of satisfaction for anything. You just keep wondering why you just wasted 100 minutes watching NOTHING happen and nothing resolve itself. Watch out.

Open Water
(2003)

Not Scary
I saw this film Saturday, August 14th, in Austin, Texas during a special screening put on by the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. I mention this because it was shown on the WATER! All of us were floating in the water watching this film. A unique experience yes, but it did not help this film. It was not scary at all, and I was FLOATING IN THE WATER SURROUNDED BY FISH! Now, you would think being in six feet of water or more (the further out you went) would amp up the scare factor of the film, but it really just served to show how many flaws it has. It could have been terribly scary, even with the low budget, but the director cast a terrible actress in the lead role who sounds like a porno star when she's supposed to be in fear, and does not ramp up the terror when the sharks appear. Save for the last five or ten minutes which finally come alive with shark mayhem, everything moves too slowly and without any real investment in the characters or the story. Save yourself time and just rent it. It's not worth it, and I saw it IN THE WATER!!!!!!

I, Robot
(2004)

There Is A Reason
I'll keep this short.

If you haven't read Asimov's book and aren't a cynical person who just really wants to find something wrong in absolutely everything, you will enjoy the heck out of this film.

I went into it thinking it was going to be awful, especially after the first trailer and from reading all these fanboy website reviews, but in the end, it is what it always is, nothing but people who clamor to be something more than they are trying to feel important.

This film is fun, action packed, and has a decent, definitely by recent summer movie fare, involving story. Big Willie is funny when he needs to be and serious at other spots. And Sonny, well Sonny is quite a creation.
