Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time
(1991)

Only movie for which I have ever demanded the return of my money
Truly flatulent script, and I was very disappointed with Marc Singer for agreeing to be in it.

I actually walked out of the theater about 15-20 minutes into it, and demanded my money back. I have actually walked out of a movie only 3 times in my life (I am 43 years old) and this is the only one that made me mad enough to demand my ticket price back. If I could have, I would have gotten a refund on the popcorn, too. This was a truly lousy movie, and there is no excuse.

For one thing, how does someone who was raised as a pre-tech barbarian learn to DRIVE A CAR? IN California!!!? (Driving a car is a somewhat tricky skill, and in California, even tricker...I should know, I live there.)

The Twilight Zone: Her Pilgrim Soul/I of Newton
(1985)
Episode 12, Season 1

Very worth seeing, if you get the chance
"Her Pilgrim Soul" is one of the most beautiful romance stories I have ever seen, and the acting in is perfection. I cry every time I watch it.

"I of Newton" makes me laugh every time. I especially like the Devil's ever-changing T-shirt. And, as my husband with a BS in mathematics and physics remarks, "Never mess with a mathematician."

These sketches were an example of the best of the new Twilight Zone series. Stories like these were why I hoped it would continue. Stories not like these are what I believe killed the series; very uneven quantity.

However, if you get a chance to see these two episodes, take it. You'll be well-rewarded.

Between Time and Timbuktu
(1972)

A really great quiet little film
I saw this film one time and one time only, in a Sci-Fi Lit class in my senior year of high school in 1980. This made a big impression on me to this day. There were moments of joyful silliness (Walter Gesundheit is actually a double pun, if you are studying German, which I also was taking that year), and scenes of incredibly pure beauty. I found large parts of this movie promoted a philosophy of hope, which was very important to a (then) suicidal teenager. This film kept me out of the knife-room for MONTHS.

I don't know where the teacher obtained the print, and if I could get a copy these days, I would without hesitation, even if I had to pay a lot. Quick, someone tell Mr. Vonnegut so it will be released.

The Wicker Man
(2006)

Terrible...see the original, but skip this one
As a fan of the original 'Wickerman' I was hopeful that this one would be alright, as Neil LaBute stated he was 'so inspired' by the original 1973 version. I stand disappointed. If there was anyway to give this thing zero stars on the above voting slot I would. In short, this remake is terrible.

Well, okay, the scenery is beautiful, and the girls are pretty.

But the script is very incoherent, with the logical connection between the cop's nervous breakdown (with hallucinations) and the events on the island is totally not established, and the mythological background of the island's feminist society can best be described as mostly inaccurate, out of context where at all even close to accurate, and a hash of misused ideas overall. Even the concept of a hive-type society is not used in a proper manner. It's as if Mr. LaBute and his colleagues just slapped together a bunch of stuff that scared them as children.

Nicholas Cage's emotional expressions run the gamut from A to B (to paraphrase an earlier critic). Ellen Burstyn and the other ladies are not allowed to use any of their formidable talents. One can only conclude bad direction is at fault.

Much of what made the earlier movie so wonderful: the old-style folksongs and music (many of which were authentic), the use of surviving pre-Christian English customs and festival-practices, the emphasis on fertility and sexuality (without being crude, another thing that most modern film-makers seem incapable of doing) are all missing.

One can only conclude that Mr. LaBute may have watched the original movie, but he didn't really SEE it.

Save your money & rent or buy the original.

Godspell: A Musical Based on the Gospel According to St. Matthew
(1973)

Good as a movie -- better as a stage show
I have seen this show as both a movie and as a stage show. Although the movie is magnificent in many ways (not the least of which is Victor Garber), it does lose something by not being live and interacting with the audience. 'You Are the Light of the World' in particular, which in the stage show is used to lead to the intermission, ended by having the actors serving wine to the audience.

Some have asked why Victor Garber did not do more movies. If there is a particular reason, I don't know, but I do know he has a successful Broadway/live theater career in addition to his television career. His performance in "Lend Me a Tenor" was particularly memorable, and I believe was nominated for a Tony award.

Xanadu
(1980)

Written by committee and unfortunately shows it
I have a sneaking liking for most of this film: 1) I am a big Michael Beck fan, so anything he is in gets tried out. 2) Olivia Newton-John knew her acting limits and stayed within them (this is a good thing). 3) The music is (mostly) fantastic...feel-good stuff, and ONJ has a lovely singing voice, and ELO has never been beat.

But my objections are as follows: 1) The plot is extremely choppy, the character development nil, the conflict needing to be resolved is minimal. It is more of an extended music video than an actual movie. Not a bad thing in and of itself, but for that budget and build-up, one has a right to expect more. 2) WHY was Gene Kelly so under-utilized? The man was an artistic GOD who could act, dance, sing, skate, and yet had to compete with lesser performers for every second of screen time. One big 'for instance' is the 'updating the wardrobe' dance number...I would have done that as a Kelly solo if I was writing the thing. 3) I REALLY hated the last 10 minutes or so before the credits, which my friends and I referred to as ONJ's screen test reel. Really awful, and no excuse for it. 3)
