American Daredevil
(2021)

Excellent documentary, wasted life
This is an excellent documentary about a "wing suiter", those guys who wear suits that make them fall slightly less than straight down. (they try to rationalize that they are "flying", but no, they are just falling less steeply) I was so angry to see this guy's family rationalize this kid's death wish. The wing suiters definitely have some kind of mental illness, an addiction, such that if they don't quit, THEY WILL DIE. The film tries to build the kid's life up by citing how he was the youngest to do this and that, but like with many kids you read about who become the youngest at something, it's all about their parents ego building. Heroin addicts only have to worry about their drug getting cut with fentanyl, or just more pure heroin; these wing suiters only have themselves to blame for an early death.

Inside
(2023)

Why oh why didn't I come to IMDB before watching this?
Not too many movies leave me with the "what a waste of time" feeling, but this was one. Although the acting was good, there were just too many ridiculous things going on, and it was just too draggy. And like the usual sucker I am for watching until the end, I kept hoping "well maybe the ending will justify this colossal waste of time"; but no. Run away from this movie! You are better off watching the sequel to "Dumb and Dumber", or even one of the really lousy "Pink Panther" movies with Steve Martin. I don't know why imdb requires so many characters now for reviews, so I'll just say I warned you.

The Big Bang Theory
(2007)

Well above average for a present-day sitcom!
I had seen scattered episodes over the years, but wasn't a regular watcher when the show was on network TV. For the past few months I have been going through the entire series on HBOMax. I get many laughs throughout each episode. The acting is good, and most storylines are plausible. Like any series, there are some episodes that stand out above the rest. Today, I saw what I think is the funniest of the series, Season 12, Episode 16, where the Will Wheaton character is found to have a Dungeons and Dragons party at his house with various celebrities. You, of course, need to know the characters of the series to truly appreciate this episode, but if you have any familiarity with the characters, this episode is definitely worth watching. My only complaint about the series is the pre-occupation with sex, and the constant characterization of sex as a casual thing people do virtually as soon as they meet; definitely Hollywood mentality showing through on that point.

100 Foot Wave
(2021)

Excellent if you have an interest in the ocean
I grew up surfing the Gulf of Mexico (yes, there are waves there :) ) and have enjoyed surfing there, the Atlantic, and the Pacific, over the past 50+ years, but of course, any waves I have ever surfed weren't even in the same reality as the massive waves documented in this series. What stands out for me is how essentially futile the quest to ride ever bigger waves is. Like with the adrenaline junkies of other sports, they pursue an essentially meaningless, and dangerous, goal, with the predictable destruction of their personal lives; but they still have fun surfing. The cinematography in the series is excellent, and there is enough suspense to keep you watching; particulary what will happen with the lead character, a 50+ big-wave surfer. My main complaint is the seemingly non-stop violin background music. Hey series producers: the pursuit of big waves is interesting, but it's not so phenomenal that it deserves constant dramatic music in the background.

The Majestic
(2001)

Another movie that is better than the average imdb rating!
So it's been more than 20 years since this movie hit theaters. I had vaguely remembered it, but didn't see it until today. Thanks to our local library's free DVD checkouts, I gave it a try. It was really good! I don't understand how so many people rated it so low; perhaps they thought it was going to be a typical, silly comedy of Jim Carrey. I like those, but knew it wasn't going to be one of those, based on the description on the DVD case. It was a great, feel-good, sentimental movie, and included a few laughs along the way. The acting was great, and included some appearances by many older actors and actresses. I looked up the town many scenes were filmed in (just use Google street view :) ) and it looks like a cool place to visit some day. If you view this w/o a pre-conceived notion of what a Jim Carrey movie should be like, you will probably like it.

Shotgun Wedding
(2022)

Could have been a 9, maybe a 10
The plot of this movie is great. The potential for humor is massive. Unfortunately, they didn't hire comic actors for the lead parts. If they had had someone like Kevin James play the male lead, and perhaps that chubby actress (can't remember her name), it could have been hilarious, but Jlo is not a fantastic actress, and possesses almost zero comedic actress skills. About the same for Ryan Reynolds. I rated it a 7 for potential, but is probably closer to 6. The producers must know the two lead actors because I can't see why someone making a comedy would hire those two. It's not a total disappointment, and since it's "free", at least you won't be mad you watched it like you would if you paid to see it in a theater.

Idiotest
(2014)

Funny and entertaining, and you get to see if YOU are an idiot :)
I started watching this on the Pluto streaming service. The host, Ben Glieb, really makes the show; he is that funny! Ben's interactions with the contestants provides a nice, personal touch; you almost feel like you know the contestants. The tests are fun to watch and try to solve. Many of the tests are incredibly easy, but some are at the level it would take a Mensa member to solve. I don't know how many full seasons the show has run, or whether it is still running, but I plan to continue to watch as many as I can. The one thing I can't believe, is how long reviews have to be to qualify for posting now!

Fear Factor
(2001)

I can't believe the average rating is so low
I've been watching the streaming re-runs for a few weeks, and I have been thoroughly entertained! I'm a sucker for ANY kind of competition, so that is one reason I enjoy watching. That each episode includes good looking young women often wearing a bikini is just an added bonus :) The stunts often include some athletic aspect, so it is not just pretend competition, and unlike Survivor, I don't think the blatant scripting that goes on there occurs. And if you can't laugh at people gagging on various kinds of spoiled organic matter and/or living creatures, you just can't laugh :) Joe Rogan is a great host and balances motivating the contestants with ribbing them when they give up or fail.

Ghost Town
(1988)

Not as bad as the average rating suggests
I happened across this when channel surfing and decided to watch it. It really isn't that bad. If you don't mind spending an hour and a half (or two with all the commercial breaks), you probably won't be mad like you might be with some truly bad movies. It's about a ghost town; do you need to know more? Just have fun with it. I thought the acting was a lot better than you typically see in these types of B movies. I've always been a sucker for any "western" movie, so perhaps I'm a little biased. I did think it was funny when a wall clock from one scene was used in a completely different building of another scene (perhaps they were on sale? :) )

The Shallows
(2016)

Not sure why this has a low average
I hadn't seen any reviews prior to watching this. I was attracted to it because I surf. I thought it was a well-done shark thriller, and other than a few blatant "that's pretty ridiculous" sequences, they pulled it off nicely with excellent cinematography, and I thought Blake Lively did an excellent job in her part, as did the actors in the other roles, which were all very minor. I thought the plot had enough surprises to keep you interested. In regard to her doing something surfers wouldn't do, I could dismiss it as due to total curiosity, rather than a blatant "no surfer would ever do that".

7 Days to Vegas
(2019)

Just not worth the time
I thought there might be something worthwhile to see, based on the reviews, so I watched this whole, sorry movie. (at least there were some shots of the desert, which I like :) ) The acting is generally bad, and the plot is just not that believable. They tried to be a combination of "Oceans 11" and maybe "The Hangover", but didn't succeed in providing the entertainment of either. In typical Hollywood fashion, ample F-bombs were included, and a few semi-nudes; neither adding to the plot or value of the movie. Don't waste your time watching this. I can't believe it got funded!

WKRP in Cincinnati
(1978)

Johnnie Fever has died, and I had to post a review!
Just saw that Howard Hesseman ("Johnny Fever") has died, and felt the need to check out IMDB for WKRP info, and post a review. I rate almost nothing a perfect 10 on this site, but as far as TV situation comedies go, this show is clearly a 10, and even today is totally enjoyable to watch! The characters are extremely well developed (and some physically well developed ;) ) and the stories from week to week are always entertaining. The raunch factor of situation comedies of the past 20 years is absent. This show reveals that you don't have to have cheap and blatant sexually-related jokes to get a laugh.

Young Sheldon
(2017)

Better than "Big Bang Theory" (BBT) IMHO
I don't know of too many TV comedies that can make you laugh out loud one minute, and then a minute later, make you actually shed tears! Whereas BBT seemed to be a non-stop stream of nerds trying to get laid, "Young Sheldon" includes multiple story arcs and deeper characters. Sure, there are some over-the-top parody characters, like the church pastor, but overall, the acting and storylines are solid, and each episode has some pretty good "lessons", not unlike the sitcoms of the 1960's.

Citizen Kane
(1941)

I just don't get it being considered one of the greatest movies ever
After hearing for years, perhaps decades, that "Citizen Kane" was one of, if not, the greatest film ever made, I watched it. Perhaps because of all the hype, it was a letdown for me. From what others have written, it was a breakthrough film of its time. But I'm not watching it in 1941, I'm watching it in 2021. After watching movies for the past 50+ years, this one just didn't do much for me. It certainly didn't entertain me. The acting is great, but that wasn't enough to carry it for me. I would only recommend watching it just so you can say, "Yeah, I finally watched it, but...".

Joker
(2019)

I guess more people like dark, depressing movies than me
I saw how highly rated this movie is, so decided to watch it. I guess I should have read reviews rather than just going by the ratings. Although the acting is scary good, the people behind this movie must have thought having long, drawn out scenes would make it "artier". It could have easily fit into a 90-minute slot without losing anything of substance. I found no redeeming qualities to this movie, other than the excellent acting (which is why I rated it a 7), and am sorry I spent the time watching it.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
(1982)

I can't believe this only averages 7.7!
I have watched ST2 several times over the years, and have found it to be one of the best scifi movies ever made! What makes it especially good is that it continues the story arc begun with an episode of the original series! Other than the usual "less than steller" acting by William Shatner, I can find no fault with this movie! Ricardo Montalban pretty much steals the show, and is so believable, it is almost scary :) I highly recommend, and it is really a requirement to totally enjoy this movie, watching the original ST episode featuring Khan.

Frasier
(1993)

Possibly the only sitcom worthy of a 10!
I watched this series on and off when it originally aired, then binge watched the entire series a few years ago. I am now occasionally watching reruns and as good as it is the first time, it almost seems better with each new viewing! The writing is so clever that you really have to make sure you hear, and see, EVERYTHING to appreciate all the details that went into this show! Unlike many series, there is no "jump the shark" episode, or even a decrease in quality during the last years. The series also seems to defy appearing dated because whether intentional or not, there don't appear to be markers of the time period of the original airing. I would like to meet someone who doesn't like this show because I can't think of any good reason not to.

Classic Albums: Steely Dan: Aja
(2000)
Episode 5, Season 2

Wow!
I stumbled onto this film when my smart TV wouldn't load normally, and I clicked "free" as an option, and it appeared. The incredible, meticulous, effort to produce this album is totally unknown, and un-appreciated, until you see this! What ?sad, is to find out that it was made in 2000, and therefore, almost all the people depicted are either dead or well past their ability and talent now, due to age. Who knew they went through six or more musicians before deciding which track to incorporate in a song?

The Mummy
(1999)

How could this only average 7.0?
I watched it for about the 5th time the other day, and it gets better with each viewing! I remember watching it in the theater when it first came out, and I thought "what a ridiculous movie!". I would have rated it 4 or 5 at the time. But each time I have seen it since then, I have grown to appreciate the intended humor; there are many great lines, and some jokes are pretty subtle, like the gags in the background of the Simpsons. As enjoyable as watching this is, we made the mistake of watching the sequel a few days later, which is so bad it should be banned :) (and that being the first sequel; I've heard there is a 2nd sequel that makes the 2nd seem good :) )

Cobra Kai
(2018)

Way better than I expected!
I was expecting a cheesy rip-off of the first movie, and have been pleasantly surprised at the complex plot lines and character development! There are humorous call backs to some lines/scenes in the movie to satisfy a little nostalgia craving. I'm midway through the second season, so can't comment on the totality of the two seasons, but I haven't been disappointed by anything yet. The acting is amazingly good too; too bad Pat Morita died a few years ago because it would have been cool if he could have also been in this series.

The Chase
(2013)

A true trivia game!
A former Baywatch babe hosting a game show, what's not to love! :) All the Brits bashing this show, I guess, is like people always bashing remakes of original TV shows or movies. I'm surprised how many people don't take the higher offers from the Beast, because most would seem to have been able to bank it. Beating the Beast in the final chase is another thing altogether though, because it's not multiple choice then! I've been watching the re-runs on Game Show Network; I never saw it when it was originally aired. I suggest ignoring the bad reviews here and watch it, then make up your own mind.

Goldfinger
(1964)

The best Bond, the best Bond film!
I first saw this when I was about 7 (yes, my parents probably shouldn't have let me watch it; I think it was at a drive-in theater, where kids would play on a playground, unattended, while their parents watched movies not so suited for children; those were the days :) ), and have seen it 3 or 4 more times during the past 55 years. Sean Connery will always be the best Bond, and not due to nostalgia. Although this was the 3rd Bond film, it was the first with wide release and abundant viewership, so it was the 1st for most people. The combination of a believable plot, believable gadgets, excellent acting, beautiful women, etc., etc., makes this the best Bond film by anyone's measure. The only flaw that has always bothered me (except when I was 7 :) ), is when the planes fly over and the troops on the ground immediately react, but I guess that could be explained by not having them properly informed about the relationship between a planes height and the time for something released by a plane to reach the ground :) Anyway, I don't think anyone is going to read an IMDB review before watching this, because I think everyone has seen it! Just enjoy it one more time!

The Other Guys
(2010)

I hadn't heard of this comedy, and now know why.
I was surfing the movie selections on Netflix and came across this; never heard of it before. I started to watch, and got drawn in, and was not disappointed during the first half! This is a comedy/parody movie people! Some reviews suggest the reviewers thought it was supposed to be a real cop movie! This is a Will Farrell movie; what do you expect! What is a really nice bonus is all the other people appearing in either cameos or significant parts, including Rock and Samuel Jackson. Unfortunately, the gas runs out half way through! It's as if they were trying to meet a production schedule, or perhaps the writers just gave up, but it really lagged in the second half. I mistakenly rated this a 9 at first because I had only watched the first half, but completed it later and had to come back here to revise my rating and review.

6 Underground
(2019)

Unbelievably ridiculous!
I started to watch, but I just couldn't get past the opening 15 minutes of the most ridiculous car chase I have ever seen! There were so many ridiculous aspects that I had to quit watching. I don't know how people can stomach such inanity!

Terminator: Dark Fate
(2019)

It's not the greatest, but certainly not as bad as some people are claiming
This was an entertaining movie. That about summarizes it. It DID "steal" a little from T2, but doesn't every sequel "steal" a little bit from previous films? It was fun, and had some good jokes thrown in. The CGI was pretty cool to see, and may be difficult to fully appreciate on TV (unless a really large TV). If you have a discount theater to see it in, after the main theater run is over, I would recommend saving some money and wait to go then.
