Scarecrows
(1988)

creepy 80s flick
i bought this $1.00 DVD at a grocery store called save lot,its a double feature from east west DVD,they put out a lot of good movies for a dollar, the other movie on the DVD is a little known zombie movie called;garden of the dead.scarecrows is very dark and original.too bad the picture quality on the disc isn't that great.a bunch of robbers land a plane and get terrorized by creepy scarecrows.thats all I'm gonna say, don't want to spoil it.but be on the lookout for this movie.ill be reviewing garden of the dead soon.but for a buck you cant beat this horror double feature,OK no big name stars in either movie, but if you want good scares scarecrows delivers, just like domino's pizza.its a low budget movie but the special effects are very well done.not to be confused with the low budget scarecrow slayer series.check it out. 7 out of 10.

Scary Movie 4
(2006)

not as funny as the first two
when i saw the previews for scary movie 4 my expectations were high. as a whole the movie is'nt that funny.there are scenes that are.the Dr Phil and shaquille o'Neal scene was the best.the king Kong spoof never made it,even in the out takes.well at least its a little better then scary movie 3.i think it was much funnier when the wayons brothers did it.Anna Farris and Regina king are the only survivors from the first 3.scary movie 4 spoofs war of the worlds, the village, million dollar baby, saw, and the grudge.there was supposed to be a cameo by Paris Hilton and a spoof of that awful;house of wax but she was too busy.i believe scary movie has jumped the shark after the 2nd one. its time to retire the scary movie franchise or give it back to the wayons brothers.i give this movie 5 out of 10.

Road to Bali
(1952)

very good comedy
I'm so glad you can find good movies for a dollar at this store called dollar tree,it gives me a chance to see movies i may have missed before. the road to Bali is on this double feature along with bob hopes my favorite brunette.the quality of this DVD is pretty good, great color although there are no chapter stops or extras, hey this was a dollar. the road to Bali is a great comedy with some musical numbers all sung by actor's bing Crosby, bob hope, and beautiful Dorothy lamour.a song and comedy team(hope and Crosby)is tricked into deep sea diving in Bali for a treasure protected by a giant squid.peter coe and Micheal ansara play some unsavory characters.and look for cameos by Humphrey Bogart,Jane Russell,Carolyn Jones, and dean martin and jerry lewis.remember bob hope and bing Crosby did a cameo for their film scared stiff in the same year.ill have to say i enjoyed the road to Bali.and i have to thank dollar tree once again for providing good quality movies at a great price, even though i would pay more for this great movie.for trivia buffs this was the only road movie that was in color, according to the movie book video hounds.i recommend this to all fans of good nostalgic comedies.i give road to Bali 10 out of 10.

Frankenstein's Daughter
(1958)

chiller theater classic
as a kid in Paterson new jersey i loved channel 11's chiller theater, the claymation hand coming out of the grave grabbing the letters that spell chiller, anyway Frankensteins daughter is a wonderfully cheesy b-movie that scared me as a kid,but now its one of my favorite cheesy monster films.the monster is supposed to be a woman but looks like a man monster with lipstick.the spooky music was used in missile to the moon the same year which was a remake of the 3d movie cat-women of the moon.harold Lloyd Jr plays a descendant of Dr Frankenstein,so he decides to create a monster in the basement of his doctor employer, whose niece(Sandra knight)is unknowingly used as a guinea pig for Dr franks experiments.she turns into a bug eyed big toothed monster that looks amazingly like one of the she demons.no surprise it was made at the same studio as she demons,Astor films. john Ashley the king of b-movies from the 50's and later star of the Filipino monster movies plays the girls boyfriend.i actually thought this was better then the usual b-movies.Sandra knight went on to star in the terror with her future husband jack Nicholson, and the legendary Boris karloff.7 out of 10.a good bad movie.

Peeping Tom
(1960)

very good movie
i saw peeping tom on rob zombies underground cinema on turner classics,i have to admit it is a good movie, scary like Alfred Hitchcock's;psycho.but for some reason i did'nt think it was a movie in color.anyway its a highly recommended film.if rob zombie says its good i have to agree with him.he knows good horror/monster films.i don't really know anyone in the cast except Moira shearer, who did some movie called the red shoes, heard of it but did'nt see it. the story concerns a shy but demented photographer who likes to film his victims before killing them with his spiked tripod.remember this is 1960 so don't expect buckets of blood and gore.i cant believe i never seen this movie before, but then again there's a lot of vintage films i never seen yet.i recommend this movie and i also recommend rob zombies underground cinema on turner classics.8 out of 10.

House of Dark Shadows
(1970)

big screen Barnabas Collins
as a baby boomer i sort of remember the series dark shadows, for its time it was creepy and scary.werewolves, vampires, time travel,a Gothic old house, and the blue whale tavern.and this was a soap opera during the late 60's thru the 70's.i recently seen this on turner classics,i know a bit late, but never seen the sequel yet either.the movie is good and does the TV show justice.all the same cast members.Jonathan frid as Barnabas Collins the vampire with his sinister cane with a wolves(?) head.a guy my sister dated in the 70's had a cane like Barnabas,i don't think it was the original.maybe it was but as a horror buff i was in awe of the cane.i remember reading through that great magazine famous monsters of film-land for tidbits on the series.and the upcoming movie. i don't know why i did'nt see it when it was released.maybe because of the pg rating(then GP)i was too young.i recommend house of dark shadows to all the baby boomer's who watched the dark soap opera.8 out of 10.

Mesmerized
(1985)

not bad Jodie foster movie
mesmerized is a good but very underrated movie about the true story of Victoria Thompson in the 1800's.Jodie foster is great in the role and her acting is above average as usual.well I'm a huge Jodie foster fan so i try to watch all her films, even the little known ones.john lithgow plays her creepy older husband.and Micheal Murphy(Howard sterns private parts)plays a minister who's into hypnotism.well i bought this DVD at a dollar tree store for a buck, the other feature is an early demi Moore film from 1981 called choices.as for mesmerized,i was surprised that i enjoyed it,after reading some of the posts i was determined to judge it for myself.all others should do the same, every one has different tastes. if you like Jodie foster then i recommend mesmerized.i give it 7 out of 10.sorry no spoilers.not giving away any of the plot.that would be a sin.

Frankenstein Unbound
(1990)

roger Corman returns as director
as a die hard Gothic horror movie fan i try to watch all the versions of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, some great some really bad.when i heard that roger corman was going to direct this i was excited, roger corman has'nt directed a movie in a very long time so i knew this was going to be quite special.with Raul Julia, john hurt,Bridgett Fonda, and Jason Patric in the cast, its a big budget production, the story is kind of bizarre, what if Mary Shelly's Frankenstein was based on a true story? well this kind hearted but well meaning mad scientist(hurt)gets sent back to the past with his futuristic talking car(like kit from knight-rider)and meets Mary Shelly(Fonda)and Dr Frankenstein(Julia)and his monster(nick brimble)this movie was based on the novel of the same name.its got a hauntingly good score, everything works,i liked Frankenstein unbound,i believe Mary Shelly would be proud.I'm glad roger corman directed this,he did a great job.8 out of 10.

Eva, la Venere selvaggia
(1968)

mad scientist goes ape
king of Kong island or Kong's island has nothing to do with king Kong, and it is'nt even on an island but its an entertaining little goofy b-movie about a mad scientist(Marc Lawrence)turning gorillas into remote controlled killers from brain implants.well now its up to Hercules actor(brad Harris)to save the day, playing a mercenary this time.there's also a half naked wild woman named eve who is a friend of the gorillas, well before they are tampered with.when i first saw this i think it was on Elvira's movie macabre.which makes it more interesting. if you like grade b monster movies with zero plot then you will like Kong island.i bought this as a twin pack from retro media, the other movie is the long lost British made queen Kong, which i will review soon. as for Kong island,i give it 6 out of 10.

Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
(1965)

sexy violent classic Russ Meyer
i have only seen a few Russ Meyer films, this one and beyond the valley of the dolls.but faster pussycat kill kill is a great one,and ahead of its time for 1965.its about three sexy go go dancers(tura satana,Lori Williams, hajj)involved in causing mayhem and even murder.there's enough violence to give this an r rating, but when i saw it on rob zombies underground on turner classics it was rated m,it was uncut, there's no nudity but tura satana, hajj, and Lori Williams look sexy throughout the whole movie.tura satana always looks like shes going to bust out of her top,and this was before breast implants,Russ Meyer delivers a real good sexy violent b movie with a lot of action.and a cult following,I'm surprised they did'nt try to remake this.i remember tura satana in a really bad movie called astro zombies starring the great john carradine, but ill have to say faster pussycat kill kill was a great Russ Meyer movie.filmed in glorious black and white.10 out of 10.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
(1974)

very raw and realistic horror
From the beginning of Texas chainsaw massacre you know you are going to be scared beyond belief, this was released about a year after the exorcist, its loosely based on the story of real life killer and cannibal ed gein from Wisconsin.but this is a whole family of twisted psychos in Texas that prey on some teens traveling through Texas.like Halloween most of the horror is suggested.not a lot of blood and guts but it will really give you nightmares.so many remakes and sequels but this one is by far the best.Tobe hooper and Kim henkel made this on a low budget and was bought by new line cinema.the first time i saw this was during its re-release in 1984.Texas chainsaw massacre is a classic horror film like Halloween, the exorcist and night of the living dead.when critic Rex reed reviewed this movie he called it the most disgusting movie ever made,i guess it scared him.this movie was imitated so many times it makes you wonder,is imitation the best form of flattery?the imitations include;wrong turn, cabin fever, and even the 2005 release house of wax.gunner Hanson is credible as leather face the demented chainsaw wielding maniac who wears a human face as a mask to cover his deformed face.Marilyn burns as one of the victims of the lethal family. the Texas chainsaw massacre is a milestone movie imitated but never equaled.10 out of 10.

La plus longue nuit du diable
(1971)

Very scary shocker from Belgium/Italy
I saw this as one of 10 horror films on a collection from brentwood DVD called;fright night, its an awesome collection of fright films.anyway the devils nightmare is a Belgium/Italian made shocker about a group of tourists(each one represents one of the 7 deadly sins)they get stranded at the castle of an ex Nazi officer.there's a family curse, gruesome murders, lots of nudity(surprising for 1971)and a very good soundtrack. I'm usually a sucker for good European horror movies especially with the sexy beautiful Erika blanc, who starred in many Italian horror films.sort of like a rival of Barbara Steele.the murders are very gruesome.the dubbing is sloppy but thats expected.i saw this years ago on the USA cable network,of course it was chopped up by the censors. it was hosted by commander USA.who used to show very strange movies. watch the uncut version for the full effect.ignore the critics because most of them dismissed this film as junk.you be the judge.believe me its kind of scary.8 out of 10,Erika blanc gets 10 out of 10 because she was hot.

Barbarella
(1968)

sexy space traveler
Barbarella was ahead of its time, and one of the first movies to show nudity with no mpaa rating.Jane Fonda has a few frontal nude scenes as she strips out of her spacesuit during the beginning credits.its a psychedelic space trip based on the adult french comic about a sexy space traveler that is sent to find a renegade earthling that has gone bad.there's robots, evil children, biting attacking dolls, killer birds, and a good guy,a blind angel(john Phillip law)that aids Barbarella in her quest.its far out and very entertaining.produced by Dino DE laurentis(a few years later he would give us king Kong)Jane Fonda was very sexy in this movie and it became a cult classic.her outfits consisted of saran wrap and vinyl.i believe this is where Forrest j Ackerman got his inspiration for vampirella the comic book character he created in 1969 for warren publishing.the DVD version is in widescreen and looks very good.i remember hearing Howard stern talk about seeing this movie with his dad when he was a kid,and he was very embarrassed watching it with his dad.its a fun movie and very campy. the music is very late sixties.i recommend this movie,8 out of 10.

Dillinger and Capone
(1995)

Good gangster film
fictional account about Capone and dillinger.martin sheen plays john dillinger(who survived the shooting at the movie theater)like i said fictional.he wants to go straight and leave the life of crime behind. AL Capone(f Murray Abraham)has other plans.he kidnaps Dillinger's wife(Catherine hicks)and son to force him to rob the gangsters that have all his stolen money.along for the ride is don stroud,Sasha Jensen,Jeffrey combs,Bert remsen, and maria ford.its a roger corman produced gangster movie that delivers.OK its not the untouchables or scarface but its a good exciting gangster b movie, made by Concorde/new horizons.the sequel sort of is baby face nelson that starred c Thomas Howell and f Murray Abraham as Capone again.the music on the sound rack is very good.i would put this in a class with big bad mama, and bloody mama.i did enjoy this movie, maybe because I'm a Roger Corman fan, even though there's a few Corman movies i did'nt like, for instance;carnosaur. I'm giving dillinger and Capone 8 out of 10.it rocks!

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
(1984)

the best Friday the 13th
i have seen every Friday the 13th movie from the first to the latest team up with razor clawed Freddy Krueger, and ill have to say this one is the best one.mainly for the good cast.Corey Feldman(gremlins)crispen glover(Willard)Kimberly beck(nightmare at noon)Bruce Mahler(police academy)although not a stellar cast its a good cast for a Friday the 13th sequel.that unstoppable killing zombie Jason is back to do some more killing.the really good creepy gory make up effects were done by maestro tom savini(dawn of the dead, maniac,Friday the 13th)i know most people will dismiss this as just another Friday the 13th movie, but it is by far the best one.the ones to follow were not as good, not counting Freddy vs Jason.Corey Feldman did this the same time as Steven Spielberg's;gremlins.i am a sucker for actress Kimberly beck who i thought was a very beautiful girl next door type, who i remember from horror films massacre at central high(1976) nightmare at noon(1987) and an episode of the TV show buck rogers titles cruise ship to the stars(featuring the late Dorothy Stratton)i give Friday the 13th part 4, 8 out of 10.as for being the final chapter we all know the answer to that.

Long Distance
(2005)

caller id
very original suspense film about a lonely young girl(Monica keena)who dials a wrong number by one digit and gets in touch with a serial killer at large.its one of those movies you really have to pay attention to.Monica keena who i know from Freddy vs Jason is a very good under rated actress.who should get recognized for her role in this independent but very good movie.i recently seen this on the sundance channel expecting a slasher movie, but was very surprised.and there's a surprise twist ending thats very Hitchcock like.this movie will give new meaning to the feature on your phone called caller id.i have to commend the sundance channel for picking fine movies like this,i would'nt call this so much a slasher movie, but a suspense in a class with Alfred Hitchcock's dial m for murder and psycho.I'm hoping to see more of Monica keena in more movies.although Freddy vs Jason does'nt look too good on her resume but remember thats how brad Pitt(cutting class)and johnny depp(nightmare on elm street)started.i loved long distance its a very good movie, and very original.kudos to Monica keena, she rocks.Hollywood take note move over Reese Witherspoon.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
(1984)

one two Freddy's coming for you....,
Wes Craven's infamous shocker about a horribly scarred dead killer that attacks teens in their dreams.if they die in the dream they really die. when i saw this for the first time it scared the hell out of me.it was very original and much better then most of the slasher films of the 1980's.robert englund plays Freddy Krueger,a role he became famous for. englund is no stranger to horror movies he played Willy the good alien on the TV mini series v,and in roger cormans;galaxy of terror.the other actors are ronee Blakeley(Nashville)heather langenkamp, john Saxon(blood beach)and the movie debut of johnny depp.this began the nightmare franchise and even a short lived TV series hosted by Freddy called; Freddy's nightmares.which was a lot like the twilight zone and night gallery.the movie was so successful there were several sequels, including a team up with Jason voorhees from Friday the 13th. Wes craven's first hit after the hills have eyes in 1977.craven's other big films were;last house on the left, and the scream trilogy.Fred Krueger became the first new movie monster following Frankensteins monster,Dracula, the mummy, and the wolf man.johnny depp returned for a cameo in Freddy's dead the final nightmare.you cant keep a good bogeyman down.this classic gets 10 out of 10 easy.one two Freddy's coming for you. turn out the lights, pop some popcorn, lock your doors and watch nightmare on elm street.

Galaxy of Terror
(1981)

best of the alien rip offs
When i saw the trailer for galaxy of terror i knew it was going to be good,as a roger Corman produced b-movie it is a wild ride.sort of like alien on a lower budget.it stars Eddie Albert Jr.zalman king,Sid haig, ray walston(my favorite martian)Robert englund(nightmare on elm street) Erin Moran(Joanie on TV's happy days)and grace zabriskie(twin peaks) its bizarre science fiction horror about a group of space travelers on a rescue mission encountering terrors of all sorts,a women is raped by a giant worm, now thats bizarre.James Cameron was involved in the production.critics bashed this and it was one of the movies on the DVD 50 worst movies of all time, sorry i don't agree.its the best of the alien rip offs.7 out of 10

The Brain That Wouldn't Die
(1962)

Jan in the pan
I remember watching a censored version of this on TV back in the 1970's,they cut out part of the operation in the beginning, someone getting his arm ripped out from its socket, and some of the stripper scenes.its a very gory movie for 1962.i believe it was filmed earlier like 1959 but i could be wrong, this DVD is available everywhere you look.for as low as a dollar,i spotted it at a dollar store from a company called PC treasures, with a second feature;beast of yucca flats with the late great;Tor Johnson, with a bonus cartoon superman the Arctic giant.anyway brain that would'nt die is such a classic b-movie,very campy.Jason "herb"evers as a very mad doctor trying to graft his fiancés head on the body of a bikini model, why not?there's also a mutant creature that lives in a locked room, made by the spare parts of unsuccessful experiments,i believe everyone who has seen b-movies had to see this at least once.how about a remake?on the VHS version released by warner brothers its censored.i don't know why, maybe they got the TV print and didn't bother to check it.this movie is a bit much for kids,i think even today it can give children nightmares.beware of Jan in the pan.this was released by the notorious;American International Pictures.6 out of 10.

Terror in the Aisles
(1984)

a horror fans dream
when i first seen terror in the aisles at the local movie theater i loved it,its an endless barrage of clips from;Halloween 1 and 2,texas chainsaw massacre, nighthawks,ms 45,carrie,the omen,a stranger is watching, jaws 1 and 2,marathon man,the howling,American werewolf in London, bride of Frankenstein, the wolf-man,and just so much more.the whole thing takes place in a movie theater as stars donald pleasense and Nancy Allen host it while they sit in the audience.and if you see the edited TV version they show more clips to make up for the cuts. but the clips shown in the TV version aren't in the end credits.lets see there's the fun-house,battlestar galactica(?)firstarter.it seems like another movie spliced in.it would be great to combine the TV version with the theatrical version on a special edition DVD,universal take note.there is no DVD for terror in the aisles just yet.but hopefully soon.for those of you who have not seen it,you are in for a treat. be ready for scenes of the scariest movies ever made.oh i left out the exorcist, poltergeist, alligator, food of the gods, alien, the shining, bug, Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, invasion of the body snatchers, alone in the dark, and still many more.all i can say even if you can only find it on VHS,watch it,its just awesome.10 out of 10.

It Came from Hollywood
(1982)

celebration of b-movies
It came from Hollywood features clips from some of the best b movies ever featuring;plan 9 from outer space, attack of the 50 foot woman, the killer shrews, glen or Glenda, son of Godzilla, the thing with two heads, Frankenstein meets the space monster, horror of party beach, and much more.but some of the movie clips shown are a list movies like day the earth stood still, war of the worlds, and the incredible shrinking man. hosted in segments by;Gilda radner,Dan ackroyd, john candy, and cheech and chong(they host getting high in the movies)its a fine hodgepodge of classic movie clips.it was put together very well and hopefully soon they will release this to DVD.i remember them showing this in place of Saturday night live once and they chopped it up.the getting high segment was missing of course and the racy clip from sunny side up with AL Jolson in black face was snipped.if you never seen this and you love Hollywood's b movies and some a list movies you will enjoy it came from Hollywood.and like john candy says in the beginning there's dirty parts too,not really its pg rated and there's no nude scenes.some adult language but thats it.bevare of the scene from glen or Glenda with bela Lugosi its a trip.some of the other films are i married a monster from outer space, mars needs women, amazing colossal man, cyclops, crawling eye,the manster, incredible melting man, attack of the mushroom people,Santa Claus vs the martians(with Pia zadora)beginning of the end,the giant claw, reefer madness, marijuana, and many others i didn't list.i recommend it came from Hollywood.its fun and its funny.10 out of 10.

Car Wash
(1976)

very funny 70's comedy
car wash is a hilarious 1976 comedy about a car wash, duh!and the zany people that work there and the off the wall customers that go there. comedians Richard pryor,George Carlin, and professor Irwin Corey have small but important roles, and if you seen the edited TV version Danny devito and Brooke adams turn up.for some strange reason they were cut out of the theatrical version.why ill never know.watch for pre-starsky and hutch Antonio fargas as a drag queen, and director bill duke.also Melanie mayron(thirty something)maybe soon they will release a special edition DVD with the Danny devito and Brooke adams scenes.i have the cheap good-times video version.also in the movie is the singing group;the pointer sisters.personally i liked car wash.there's a scene with butter on the ceiling that just cracks me up,because it takes me back to my childhood.and who can forget the theme song?i give car wash 8 out of 10.

Hyper Space
(1989)

not bad sci fi
hyperspace is one of those made for video movies, its not bad though predictable,i picked this up in the bargain bin at fye!with 2 dvds for $2.99 the other being something called cybernator, which doesn't look all that good, but ill have to watch it on a boring day.anyway the cast of hyperspace is good;Richard Norton,Lynn holly Johnson, don stroud,James van Patton, and Ron o'Neal(super-fly himself)the movie is about a huge space ship that gets lost in space during a computer malfunction, and the crews efforts to get back to earth.the plot is almost like alien, without the alien.the budget is low and looks like a Roger Corman produced movie but it is'nt.but hyperspace is far better then most of the made for video efforts that came out in the 80's.i guess I'm a sucker for any movie that has pretty blonde Lynn holly Johnson in it.5 out of 10.

The Company of Wolves
(1984)

stylish classy werewolf tale
Neil Jordan's company of wolves is a very stylish and classy werewolf tale.and a kind of an adult version of little red riding hood, don't get the wrong idea not an adult porno version but an adult fairytale.much like Jordan's latter interview with the vampire(94)and this boasts a great cast as well..., Angela lansbury,David warner,Stephen Rea,and Terence stamp in a small part.the special effects are bizarre and original.no cheap gore effects.a great soundtrack.and great photography. don't expect the overdone werewolf stuff, this is done more elaborate. this came out after American werewolf in London and the howling.i found company of wolves to be a great fantasy werewolf movie.and a personal favorite.watch this around Halloween.Angela lansbury is great as the wise old grandmother of red riding hood warning her of the wolves in the forest.i recommend company of wolves.10 out of 10.
