The Bold and the Beautiful
(1987)

Guiding Light all the way, not this turkey
This show will never beat Guiding Light which ran for 72 years (57 on television). It has only been going 20 years and cannot compare to the irresistible Guiding Light which Channel 10 in Australia should show instead of this crap. I have no interest in any of the characters, in particularly, Brooke's, and while I am annoyed such a show is made, I feel it is of the most senior importance to acknowledge the true soap operas which have calved out a successful niche for themselves with suitable praise from the critics worldwide alike. Such shows which can be critically appraised positively as triumphant beacons of flawless soap accolades could, for example, include favourable mentions of listings such as 'Home and Away', 'Neighbours', 'EastEnders', and even Tin Lizzy's favourite, 'Coronation Street'. I, for one, do plead with the producers of Guiding Light to please continue it's production run, afterall, we must acknowledge that the drama series 'Law and Order' is seen now as a tired dead horse, given a reprieve and double life, so it can reach it's 20th year. I say rejoicingly, let Guiding Light reach its 100th year, re-license it to achieve this accomplishment, so that we may all be dead when 'The Bold and the Beautiful' reaches its 100 anniversary in 2087. Support Guiding Light peoples, it is a CBS stable for 57 or the last 57 years, and a further 15 years on wireless. We need Guiding Light, not Bold and the Beautiful...Maybe Obamaha will get it back on the air...

Ma femme est une actrice
(2001)

Boring ! Boring ! Boring !
I'm not going to waste my valuable internet time on this one, so two words from me which sums up this pointless film.

MEGA BOREFEST !

MEGA BOREFEST !

MEGA BOREFEST !

The Hard Word
(2002)

Mediocre Film. Poor script.. Doesn't know where it's going !
Summary:

Script: Very poor. Plot doesn't know where it's going; proves uneventful.

Cast: Wonderful cast, but they are wasted in this travesty of a film.

Verdict: I resented wasting $12.80 on this piece of garbage. The only good news was it was probably the pick of the films I saw that weekend. It was better than the Mothman Prophecies, and Kikujuro was so sickly sachharin I was almost spewing in the aisle.

I know, we're told to go along, and are encouraged to support the Australian film industry, but with films like The Hard Word coming out, every now and then, I think we shouldn't have a film industry. Thank god for films like Lantana and Alibrandi, which are films which prove we have at least some good directors and actors in Australia, still.

The Mothman Prophecies
(2002)

A Very Third Rate Movie That Shows No Promise / Suspense
I had high expectations of Mark Pellington's "The Mothman Prophecies" after his superb thriller "Arlington Road" which I really loved, and hope one day to own on DVD.

The trouble with The Mothman Prophecies" lies with its dreadful script - one of the worst scripts, surely ??? To compensate for the bad script, with slow plodding where nothing happens, Pellington chooses to use cinematography to create atmospheric mood to reflect the supernatural; overall I thought the cinematography was extremely distracting in places and was one of the main factors along with the script, which ultimately makes "M.P's" a cinematic disaster.

Pellington has done much better than this with his superb Arlington Road which had a well crafted and pacey plot which made you want to hang on the back of your seat.

Richard Gere didn't do much for me either... The only film I found his suitably convincing and sincere in was his role as the lawyer in "Primal Fear" which stars the wonderful Ed Norton.

Someone stated that this should be "movie of the year" based on what they've seen so far.. I am going to decry that statement, and instead suggest this movie is on par on par to being "the worst turkey of the year", and one of the worst directed movies I've ever watched. I would not even recommend people watch this movie on video..

If you want to watch a superior film from Mr. Pellington, and haven't seen "Arlington Road", do yourself a big favour and give this movie a big berth, and hire A.R instead.

I was lucky I didn't have to pay the $12.80 ticket admission price to see this 'mumbo jumbo' piece of cod's wallop. If Pellington had had any sense he should have been credited himself anonymously with a 'Smithies' title...

VERDICT: possible the most boring film I've ever had to sit through..

A Beautiful Mind
(2001)

A Very Very Mediocre Film !
I didn't have very high expectations of this movie before seeing it as I have been exposed to Ron Howard's directional work in the past and think he's extremely superficial and third-rate with his films. Out of the five films nominated for 2001 Oscars "A Beautiful Mind" simply doesn't make the grade in my books.

The problem with this movie lies with the director and also with the dreadful screenplay. I also didn't think Russell Crowe was very convincing playing John Nash.. All the time I was watching I felt Crowe was imitating a very poor version of "Jimmy Stewart". I thought he was great in "The Insider" and more than capable in "Gladiator", but in this piece of schlock he was piss poor.

In my opinion either Gosford Park or The Fellowship Of The Rings should have won best film...

Flatliners
(1990)

Loved it in 1990; hated it on 2nd viewing (2001)
Greetings All,

Isn't it amazing the power that films have on you after the 1st viewing ?

I was so delighted by the first viewing of this film, I couldn't stop talking about "Flatliners" to all my friends for weeks - mind you I was a very impressionable 18 year old back then and my taste in films have become a little more conservative since then.

Then somehow I forgot about this film until I saw the DVD in my local department store and remembering how great it was I thought "Right ! I'll pluck you off the shelf when they bring out the Special Edition".

Last week, I was overjoyed when my best friend invited me over to watch Flatliners on DVD. The expectation was that I would love this film even more on 2nd viewing.. How wrong I was !

Verdict: after 11 years my view on this film had changed from a very scary 1st class movie to total junk which overplays on the religious and supernatural side of things ratherly superficially.

I have never been a big fan of Julia Roberts' acting (excepting for Erin Brockeridge in which she deserved her Oscar) I think the problem with this film definitely lies with the director and a so so mediocre script. I left this film feeling it had no real substance or potential, and just a couple of scarey cheap thrills which weren't very well done at all. Not even the score by James-Newtown Howard, who I rather like as a film composer, could captivate and thrill me.

In 1990 I would have given this film 9.5 / 10; but in 2001 I'd be lucky to give it 2 / 10 at best.

Moulin Rouge!
(2001)

Pure Unoriginal Trash
Absolute trash. No originality. A pure cynical exercise by Hollywood to make as much money as possible with gross manipulations & boring visual effects & a non-existent script & third rate songs which are 80-100 years before their time. I give this one 1/4 out of 10 at best. Baz must be the most overrated director in movie history.

Mansfield Park
(1999)

A very boring adaptation of Jane Austen's splendid book
I found this film immensely boring. The problem was that it was flat and the director didn't stay true to the book. Jane Austen's books are meant to be fun, but this film had none of the fun element to it. It had a script which plodded along and some of the style was completely out of character with 1802 - much more 20th century. I didn't like the feminist approach and the general politics of this film bringing in slaves (this wasn't mentioned in the book). If the director had stayed true to Jane Austen's superb "Mansfield Park" this film could have been enjoyable and full of life, instead it was flat & a waste of my time.
