For frihed og ret
(1949)

The celebratory failure
The concept of civic freedom does not quite fill out the role as the primary player in this film. Many top class actors and actresses of the time star in this film, but unfortunately it is still a hopelessly boring film.

The story is basically that of the road to democracy in Denmark. Political prisoners, the middle classes and the kings all contribute to the story, but it lacks passion and coherence. Capturing more than ten years of political turbulence within the time frame of a feature film and maintaining the main thread apparently failed the writers and the director of this film.

Selvmordsskolen
(1964)

A long running nightmare
This is the film about being caught in a nightmare that never ends. Even a visit to an amusement park frightens the poor man to death. He lives in a world, where people no longer matter, the system is self-sustaining and dehumanising - an almost Kafkan universe. In that world suicide is no longer a taboo, actually people are making a living out of instructing people how to kill themselves. The only question that does not matter, is why people commit suicide, how they do it is so much more important. The setting of this film is important as to how frightening the film is, then usually you connect the setting with pleasant things, now everything is strangely different - and thus scary.

Fem mand og Rosa
(1964)

An elegant robbery that no one noticed
A brilliant bank-robbery performed in absentia. The robber is not even there, he is hospitalized with a broken leg. The one actually performing the robbery is a judge. This absurdity goes even further, the the planning of the robbery takes place in a hospital, where five men share a room. One of them is in deep trouble due to an unfortunate photograph taken in Paris.

The film balances on the edge of the unbelievable. Is it really possible that the police never notices? would a judge really participate in a bankrobbery. None the less, it is a hilarious film due to elegance of the performed coup.

Matador
(1978)

As good as television gets
Auuchh - my arm! If you ask, where it hurts, you most surely never saw this television serie - and you are very likely to be either a foreigner or an alien, because no one else would ever ask, they would know that you are quoting "Matador" being impressed or surprised. No tv-show was ever better, then it would never have such a fortunate compilation of talent, magnificent writers, magnificent actors and a magnificent director.

The tale of the struggle between the two families is made ever present, so the point is not lost even though there is a multitude of sidestories that even includes real events. The way the story goes is so original that you never loose interest, although it is a slow going story - it takes 27 hours for it to come to an end. Real addicts find the playing time too short though. The text comprises a multitude of funny lines and jokes, you never stop laughing. The way each scene is shot, and the way the picture is framed is bold in itself. The director dares leaving the person speaking out of picture, if the facial expression of another person is more interesting. Also, he uses events as a way of foretelling, what will be happening - the doctor being quoted just prior to his appearing on screen. There are millions of details like that and it takes a long time to discover them all, but that's part of the fascination - you never get it all.

Sørensen og Rasmussen
(1940)

Class-troubles in evening gowns
In a way, Sørensen and Rasmussen is a strange film because it is about the struggle of reaching a position in society far higher than birth allows. The set on the other hand has nothing what so ever to do with what could have been a bitter social-realistic survey of the oppression of the lower social classes, then the film is set at a mansion like the regular fairy-tale stories of good vs. evil. The quarters of the lowest ranking stable-boy are nice and cosy as are those of the master and mistress. This film should be regarded as a memento to the dying absolutism - for only the will of the king changes the social rules. And the excellent performance of both leading actresses should be noted too.

Taggart
(1983)

The second best TV-show in the world - and the best in the detective genre
Probably the best detective-show in the world, it is even better than "Rejseholdet". The very best thing about Taggart is probably that you never know who the criminal is until 5 minutes before the credits, so it is intensely thrilling to the very last minute. Another remarkable feature is the constant focus on the personality of the men and women of the Maryhill police, they never end up as boring detective-robots, the show even allows their personal troubles to play a part in the plot. Another thing I like about Taggart is the way that twice (in the parts, I've watched) they borrow the outlines of another story - ex. Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson. It adds a unique taste to the plot and makes you wonder, whether the Taggart-plot will end similar to the plot in the other story, but it never does. Finally I just have to emphasize the unique dialect spoken in the show. It is FANTASTIC!!

Huset på Christianshavn
(1970)

A good show that has problems with fluctuations in quality
This show benefits from its simplicity - take a broom, two beers and a bit of imagination, thats the recipe for this show. I my opinion the imagination runs out all too often in this show. There are 84 episodes, I think, they could have cut 2/3, then it would have been a really great show. The quality of each episode changes with the writer, but the geniuses make the watching worth while, the directing is generally good. The actors are just brilliant.

Gys og gæve tanter
(1966)

A creepy film with interesting pictures and good acting
Gys og gæve tanter, I think, is a very intelligent film. The aunts form the most unbelievable pair of detectives in trying to solve the mystery of the film. But what makes this film so incredible besides the fantastic plot is the artistic use of pictures that helps emphasize the ghastliness of the entire story. The acting is very good too, only the making-up could be better, it is inconsistent with the story.

Støv på hjernen
(1961)

A film depicting the life of the ordinary Dane in 1961
A must see for anyone growing up in the early sixties in western Europe. This film stands out from the lot for being so ordinary - you could say it is extraordinarily ordinary. It is more than just a film, it is a picture of life as it took place around the time of production. So even if you weren't around in 1961, watch it, you might learn a good deal about life in suburban Denmark in the year 1961.

Mor bag rattet
(1965)

It is a hilariously funny film, but not long enough
I like this film more than any other, it is so extremely funny!!!! The opening just get you laughing - filmed as a would have been long ago, and once you've started laughing you don't stop!! The acting is unbelievably good - from everyone, but especially the main actress. I only see one minor problem, the film don't have the time frame to include all of the hilarious stuff from the book.

Vi er allesammen tossede
(1959)

This film features extraordinary funny actors and an interesting way of representing reality
I like this film because it features the Kellerdirk bros., a famous pair of comedians back in the fifties. The acting is as good as could possibly be expected of the funniest men in the country. The extraordinary joins forces with the familiar and brings this film to a metaphysical plane, where you get an entire new perspective on the world.
