3 Body Problem
(2024)

A series that surpasses many science fiction movies.
This was a pleasant surprise! I really liked this adaptation, which I watched over the weekend. Much better than most science fiction series. The visuals are captivating and the characters are convincingly portrayed with deep emotions. Yes, the movie diverges from the book. The book was written from a Chinese point of view, and most of this series takes place in England, with different characters. But that doesn't affect the story at all.

The nice thing about Cixin Liu, the book's author, is his exploration of ideas about our future and possible encounters with alien life, that has a level of technology far exceeding ours. His work shows he's a great admirer of the grandmaster of SF, Isaac Asimov, and he gives us completely new visions about scientific theories and technology we can hardly imagine. That is the essence of good science fiction.

I can recommend this series to anyone, the sf-lovers as well as anyone else. See how contact is made with an alien civilization on a planet lightyears away, and see our society reacting when the aliens are setting out to invade earth in 400 years.

Given the quality of these episodes, I cannot wait for the other two books to be adapted to the screen. There are some crazy new ideas about dark forest theories and the end of stars and civilisations.

Dune
(2021)

A masterful accomplishment
This is the movie all of us Dune fans have been waiting for the past 55 years! Denis Villeneuve said this was the project which he had been dreaming of since he was a kid, and he finally accomplished it. Many people thought a movie adaptation could never capture the intricate details of the plot with all its political intrigues and the richness of the world Frank Herbert created, and earlier attempts haven't been this successful. This movie however, brings the world to the screen as I always imagined it.

I loved the cinematography, the imagery is stunning. The contrast between the mist of Caladan and the dust storms on Arrakis is characteristic. Wide shots of desert and rock are so vivid you can almost taste the sand and the spice while watching.

The opening with Chani narrating about Arrakis draws you into the story, but it might have had some more action in the beginning of the movie. The dreams of Paul are returning several times. Action scenes are alternated with contemplations and explanations, which makes the movie feel like a long exciting dream. All the main actors have done a great job, especially Timothée Chalamet. I don't know why the character Piter de Vries was left out, but all the other characters are portrayed very well.

Of course this is only part one, so the movie has an open ending, but I can't imagine someone not wanting to wanting to see part two after watching this. I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Sightless
(2020)

A worthful recommended thriller
This really is a nice psychological thriller. Madelaine Petsch does a very convincing acting job. The slow pacing and constant tension feels like a Hitchcock thriller. I love the camera work. While Ellen has become blind we see changes take place, just like she would experience them, for example when she hears someone and doesn't know who it is. Little details in and outside the appartment change while Ellen is discovering things. It makes the movie very convincing and exciting. Maybe the plot twists are cliché, but don't keep that from sitting down and enjoying this thriller!

Heartthrob
(2017)

Fascinating love story that turns dark
When I watched Heartthrob, at first I thought it was just another teen love story, but it soon took another turn and turned into a blood curling thriller. It shows a darker side of love and has surprisingly good acting, which makes it a compelling story. It left me speechless and kept me thinking about it for days. I can understand that some have given negative reviews if it isn't what you would expect, but I think it's worth watching. This movie just gripped me.

Romeo and Juliet
(1968)

The ultimate love story
This movie is an absolute fabulous classic. The acting is so convincing, it stops my breath and makes me cry every time I see this adaptation of the famous play.

The costumes are fantastic and it really gives the air of former Italy. Accompanied by the music composed by Nino Rota it captivates and is alive from the first to the very last moment. Other film adaptations pale in comparison with this movie.

This is the ultimate love movie of all times!

All the Bright Places
(2020)

Deeply moving
This movie absolutely moves deeply! While it has not adopted all aspects from the book, it does capture the overall sentiment wonderfully. The movie misses some parts I would have included. Such as in the end the long period Violet was waiting and received only small cryptic signs of life from Finch. And only the last of the five wanderings has been transferred into the movie, missing the other ones in which all the cryptic messages are understood and reveal the hidden sides of Finch's love for Violet. Some details have not been explained, for example the glasses Violet is wearing sometimes, that are her sister's. But apart from that it is a movie you enjoy watching, it evokes strong emotions. You feel love for Finch and Violet, you feel compassion and affection, and it makes you cry in the end. It absolutely has succeeded in portraying the exact emotions as meant by the writers. The scenery and the music is beautiful and the acting is captivating. It is a movie that will stay on your mind for quite some time after watching and to me that is a sign of a successful movie. It really goes to your heart. You realize - to quote Violet when she tells what Finch has taught her - that even the ugliest of places can be beautiful, as long as you take the time to look.
