The Power of One
(1992)

Not as good as the book
Unfortunately I read this book, which I enjoyed, and that made the film less enjoyable I imagine. The visuals however were great, and the story held attention. Morgan Freedman was as ever superb, and ou were able to root for Steven Dorf.

All in all a moving story, and certainly worth viewing.

Blood & Water
(2020)

An excellently executed six-part series
There is some good stuff coming out of South Africa and this is not an exception.

It is clearly aimed at the teen and young adult market, despite some steamy intimate scenes that are tastefully executed. And I started watching the series expecting to "give in" after episode one or two, despite this I found myself glued to it.

The plot lines are well written and the characters well portrayed by some of the most promising young actors I've seen. This stands on a par and above many similar series from USA and UK. Netfilx were intelligent in this acquisition and I am certain that series two and beyond will fare very well.

I look forward not only in viewing series two but also seeing how these young talents fare in this merciless industry. Well done, definitely worth viewing!

Happiness Is a Four-Letter Word
(2016)

Sex in the City in RSA
Despite this being more of a woman's film I enjoyed it enough to watch from start to finish.

A high production value, superb visuals, glossy, a metropolitan extravaganza! The performances are a believable fun filled journey showing another side of the affluent South Africa of today. A feel good roller coaster ride!

I look forward to seeing what comes of of this slick production team in the future. Definitely worth viewing!

The Endless River
(2015)

Emotionally deep & engaging
The tragedy of this story was what held me. How awful yet real are the display of violence, the inner anguish, and the conflict.

The story keeps the viewer engaged wanting to see where the journey of these two leads, and it ends in a manner that one will not see, but is an ending that is in retrospect inevitable.

An interesting psychological portrayal of how individuals, battered by life, react under adversity and to one another. The actors did a good job in portraying this in particular the character Tiny, who exhibited the appropriate level of vulnerability and emotional readiness in a difficult role. The male protagonist, policeman, mother, and husband too did a good job in showing subtly what lay beneath.

An objective depiction of occurrences that occur in South Africa, and worth a watch.

Rare Blood
(2020)

A bizarre film, and not bad for a low budget film!
This is a bizarre film that doesn't quite fit into the genre of thriller, horror, or drama. It is quite different, but the storyline is quite clever, it does keep you on the edge of your seat, and is certainly worth a watch.

Having watched only a few South African films, I was curious to give it a go. I loved the setting, particularly the outdoors which reminded me a bit of a rural Aussie landscape. The interaction between the black and white characters was quite intriguing, and led me to ask questions.

The story is well set up, beginning with horse riding, drone footage of the beautiful South African terrain, with a wistful song playing over. This very strong opening was beautifully shot and edited. Throughout the cinematography doesn't disappoint, truly stunning visuals, with a great score. The choice of colour palette fully supported the visuals, however, I wasn't really a fan of the monochrome used later in the film and found it distracting.

The acting works well for a psychological drama, and the scripting created a monster. I don't think I've ever seen a coked-up narcissist like Panos in a film on that level. And a psycho, though at times his performance was OTT, I felt he executed a difficult role extremely well. It was quite intriguing to watch him throughout. One can only feel for the wife and sadly misguided daughter who I was particularly taken with. Keira, the wife, was a typical victim eroded by years of abuse and I thought she was convincing in this role. Totally believable. The Gunther character was an interesting element, and reminded me of a classic foreign film characterisation.

However, a few of the performances were not great. I didn't really buy the cops as South African police, and the performances at the African home scene. At times, other performances lacked grit and were somewhat confusing.

The story started slowly, developed in tempo after the crossing of the first threshold, then relief when the threat was removed, until the next unexpected onslaught, which was I thought, quite clever. That twist at the end I didn't see coming, that was great, I felt some satisfaction there.

Definitely worth a watch, a film that left me with many questions, but maybe that was the intention of the director? All in all, a well executed foreign film.

Catching Feelings
(2017)

Fun to watch RomCom
With a great production value and believable performances from the cast this certainly is worth a watch.Max, Sam, Heiner, and Joel all deliver and do not disappoint.

It is interesting to see how Johannesburg life amongst the successful is portrayed, and the visuals are great. The story seems to lag at times, but it works well as a RomCom as we associate with the dilemmas and choices made by the characters as they muddle through their respective situations.

An interesting portrayal of a modern day romantic couple in the South Africa of today.

Queen Sono
(2020)

It develops nicely
I watched the first chaotic but beautifully shot episode and decided not to continue feeling it had preteritions it could not deliver . After reading reviews, and ignoring the emotionally charged negative ones, I decided to give it a second chance, and I'm glad I did.

The plot an story line develops nicely, and holds attention. The acting in particular for the Queen Sono, Katerina, Shandy, and Connie characters is convincing, and the production value is superb. South Africa seems to be developing nicely in the film making industry,

At moments it lags, but not enough to stop one viewing. Generally this is an enjoyable journey and has a level of underlying depth in the narrative that makes one think, surprisingly. Definitely worth viewing, and I look forward to the next series.

Five Fingers for Marseilles
(2017)

Superb production value and stunning visuals
This glossy South African feature exhibits stunning cinematography and locations. The concept as well is ingenious, and most of the performances appropriately portrayed. The idea f a western style movie with all the trimmings, but set in South Africa was most interesting.

The dialogue I felt did not quite support the standard of the rest of the production value and the script lagged at times. Possibly the performances of this talented cast could have been more riveting if the dialogue was tighter. However generally the story was good enough to retain interest to the conclusion, which seems to be the general concensus of viewer reviews.

All in all an enjoyable feature, with a powerful portrayal of the protagonist Tau who portrayed the character authentically, and one a viewer would root for. That was portrayed with the appropriate menace, an actor who similarly excelled in the SA feature Vaya.

Definitely one to watch, particularly if you are a fan of Westerns with a difference, and a director to keep your eye on in the future.

The Invitation
(2015)

Not for the faint hearted - a thrilling ride.
A slow menacing boil, that starts innocuously and escalates to a point where one is edgy in one's seat waiting to see what is going to happen next. Will was well portrayed as the brooding intense protagonist, with tragedy in his past, uncomfortable but for some reason obliged, or curious enough to attend that fateful invitation.

The set up regarding Will's will power and practical empathy regarding injured coyote set up neatly his strength to act when necessary, and set some tone for his character.

When we learn of his tragic past we feel empathy for him, yet it also makes us question his sanity and state of mind, is he paranoia or not and his suspicions justified?

A clever use of a single location, and the cinematography and lighting works well in supporting the story which has us questioning for a good part of the journey, what is going on?

A well executed film, a truly riveting experience and well worth watching!

Time Trap
(2017)

Excellent concept, and well worth viewing.
A truly clever idea, quite novel, and a story idea which has an audience. Though a low budget it was cleverly executed given the obvious budgetary restraints.

The underlying theme addresses deep rooted longing for immortality, resurrection, control over helplessness, even hope. The theme is enveloped in a time travel story that is quite clever as well as being entertaining, though the storyline does become convoluted at times.

The script dialogue possibly adversely affected the actors performances which at times were unconvincing, Also I feel that the dialogue of one character sounded similar to the others which diminished associating and rooting for a character. However, the entertainment and tension hold my attention, and I watched to the end, and clearly many others did as well. This film certainly has an audience.

The journey from the ordinary world into the surreal world was well set up, and the insidious revelation of their plight well placed. This caused me to want to "warn" the protagonists "not to do this, or that," which induced some empathy for the characters.

The transformation into the "time trap" was akin to slow journey into a dream, or rather a nightmare into an imaginary world where time flits irretrievably by. Given this, at a point their plight seemed hopeless, which worked very well and had me questioning "where is this going?" It would be interesting to see what this film would be like on a higher budget, impressive I imagine.

Vaya
(2016)

Gritty & superb
This film is not a commercial "feel good" feature film, it verges at moments in despair & hopelessness, but the intricate weaving of the three stories was masterfully done, and engaging.

The performances were believable, and illustrated the plight of individuals who are placed in dire situations in an unfamiliar environment. The result is an engaging story that compelled me to watch to the end. Truly a testimony to the fact that one watches a movie in order to experience emotions and conflict one would avoid at all costs in life!

The script was clever, and the tying up of the three stories paced well, pleasantly surprising in part, and certainly satisfying. Definitely worth viewing, particularly if one wants a dose of reality in the underbelly of city life from the safety of an arm chair.
