My Mother the Car
(1965)

the song
everybody knows in the second life, you all come back sooner or later

as anything from a pussycat to a man-eating alligator

well, you all may think my story is more fiction than it's fact

but believe it or not my mother dear decided to come back - as a car

she's my very own guiding star

a 1928 porter that's my mother dear

she helps me through everything i do and i'm so glad she's here

my mother the car, my mother the car

also, while there was no such car company as porter, i recall reading something way back then that the car used to film the series was actually a buick with some cosmetics to the grill. jerry van dyke talked to his mother and she responded through the radio of the car. a 1928 automobile with a radio? well, that's Hollywood.

The Roy Rogers Show
(1951)

must have been tough growing up in London, Canada
One of the previous writers complains of anachronisms and mysteries in the Roy Rogers Show. well, they sure entertained us when we were younger. Heck, I was in my 40's when I realized that Pat Brady's Jeep, Nellybelle ran forever and never was seen pulling into a gas station. I never saw a gas station in the show. I guess that must be Hollywood. Our heroes wouldn't kill someone so they shot the gun out of their hands. Tough shot to make? Not in Hollywood.

It's amazing that anyone could have a problem with this show. Roy had a code for his little buckaroos. The world would be a heck of a different place if just half the population followed that code. Of course, a lot of people do follow it, just under a different name. Call it the Golden Rule, Koran, Torah, whatever. All of them, including Roy's code, gave the rules for treating your fellow man and the world that was provided by a Supreme Being.

Yes, sadly the museum in Victorville closed but I understand it has reopened in Branson. The previous writer should go to the Roy rogers website and read some of the mail. Read Roy and Dale's books. Their life is the epitome of the American dream. Nothing comes easy in life. You'll see that in their books and it was taught in their shows and movies. Yes the museum closed but most likely because we who grew up with Roy and Dale are getting into our last days. One of the best memories of my childhood was shaking Roy's hand at a rodeo in Madison Square Garden in NYC.

So who was your hero in London, Canada?

The Untouchables
(1959)

breeding ground for stars
Many 60's and 70's stars got exposure in this series. An interesting note is that Elizabeth Montgomery was a gangster's girlfriend in one episode. Her boyfriend was an actor she would be involved with again. He was Darren Steven's boss, Larry, in Bewitched. There is also an episode where the principal characters are in a hotel lobby and a bellhop goes across the screen quickly. I believe that bellhop is Ryan O'Neal.

It was a great series and I believe we learned a lot of history watching it as kids.

Earlier commenters are correct about the absence of gore. In the Elizabeth Montgomery episode, her boyfriend is a squealer and the bad guys find him out. The order is given to silence him and two thugs grab him by the arms with a third goon approaching with a knife. The next scene shows the boyfriend holding a bloody handkerchief to his mouth! The violence was more implied than shown.

It is one of my two favorite tv series. The other is Twilight Zone. It too shows a lot of young, soon-to-be stars (Not that I am a big fan of hers but Montgomery stars in an episode of TZ too - with Charles Bronson).

The Twilight Zone
(1959)

IT'S A COOKBOOK!!!
There is probably no one who doesn't remember the Twilight Zone and have a favorite episode. I was 11 or 12 and so many of the episodes stick in my mind. Many friends and co-workers are similarly afflicted. When a group of us are discussing the woes of commuting, someone is sure to suggest that they get off at Willoughby. Stuck in a long line for whatever, with the beginning of the line no where in sight - someone might rant "It's a cookbook!". We laugh now but some episodes gave us cause for concern.

Did you ever notice how many 50's, 60's and even 70's tv shows are represented by the guest cast of TZ? Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, Star Trek, Lost In Space, Beverly Hillbillies, The Farmer's Daughter, Dobie Gillis, My Three Sons, Batman, Big Valley, The Bob Cummings Show, My Favorite Doll (or is that My Living Doll - Julie Newmar plays a robot), Honey West, Police Woman, The Odd Couple and who knows how many more!

What a series - serious actresses like Ida Lupino and Agnes Moorehead and clowns like Don Rickles. Big screen names like Mickey Rooney and Charles Bronson. Lost In Space is represented by Johnathan Harris, Billy Mumy (numerous appearances -and its a good thing you did,Anthony) and Angela Cartwright. Batman has Adam West, Julie Newmar and the great Burgess! You have a James Bond villain (Joseph Wiseman) and the first James Bond himself (for the really entrenched trivia fans - I'm not telling you who he is but it ain't Connery).

An earlier commenter put it best - this show bred most of today's horror, suspense and occult films.
