Nowhere
(2023)

A testament to the human spirit!
I almost turned this one off early on, because most times, English dubbing is off a bit and feels artificial.

This one started off like that, but soon got better.

One can get wrapped up in this movie and become riveted to the screen, to see how she overcomes a dire situation.

The flaws in the movie were overcome by the excellent acting skills of Anna Castillo. She was very convincing as a desperate mother trying to survive an impossible situation.

Everything was well done from the filmography to the lighting to the realism of the entire project.

It is indeed a testament to human survival, ingenuity and resourcefulness.

Swallow
(2019)

Emotion-packed, well acted.
I didn't know what to expect seeing the title of this movie. It was not what I expected, but it was a phenomenal tight psychological drama.

It is a slow burn, but the worth the wait.

Haley Bennett leads a remarkable cast as a young middle-class girl thrust into a marriage to a man from a wealthy, shallow family concerned with keeping up appearances.

She has everything a girl could want; attractive husband, beautiful house, all the amenities one could want...but gradually she realizes that she is losing control of her life to please the family.

To gain some semblance of control, she develops Pica, an eating disorder that causes the ingestion of objects and substances other than food.

We follow her down a rocky path as she winds up pregnant and needs some foreign objects removed from her.

The family goes to great extent to keep her under control, and when they finally decide to place her in a facility, she decides she's had enough.

She confronts an individual from her past to try gain some insight to her condition, and finally the issue is resolved. 'Nuff said. If you want to see something different than the usual ilk coming out of Hollywood, I highly recommend this movie.

An Cailín Ciúin
(2022)

Absolutely beautiful movie.
I'm not one for quiet drama, I prefer science fiction, horror, etc., but for some reason, I felt compelled to watch this.

I am SO glad I did.

Perfectly and beautifully shot, world-class acting and directing make this one of the best movies I've ever seen.

This little, quiet, unassuming girl is sent to live with relatives for a summer while her own mum bears yet another baby. She's thrust into a situation where she's actually cared for instead of ignored. She thrives in her new environment. She and the couple grow close as she helps in the kitchen and the milking operation at their farm.

I cried a lot during this movie, especially at the end. It really gets you in the feels.

Do yourself a favor and see it.

Run Rabbit Run
(2023)

Coulda been a great movie...
Sarah Snook definitely nailed the part. She was the film's saving grace. All the actors were fantastic.

But alas, this movie was just too slow. I understand the need for character development, but there were just too many disjointed holes and illogical decisions made in the plot.

Also, why is it so trendy all of a sudden to make so-called horror movies so crazily dark? Don't these people have lights in their homes?

Little, Mia, or Alice, or whomever, doesn't do anything anyone tells her, so why does her mum keep leaving her in the house and telling her not to leave? What does she think is going to happen?

The movie is a bit of a mess, but still watchable. I wound up hating the mom, lol.

Rubikon
(2022)

Good film, BUT...
Acting was well done, hardware and special effects were top-notch, plot was pretty good, and different than many sci-fi movies in the mainstream, but one thing bothered me...at times, the actors spoke in their native tongue, sometimes at length, and it was impossible to understand what they were saying.

I tried subtitles, to no avail, it only showed the words spoken in English.

If I clicked on the subtitles "with descriptions" it translated for me, but was too annoying listening to their every move transcribed.

I felt with so much banter back and forth in Austrian/German, it really had me feeling out of the loop.

Surely they would have thought of that?

Soft & Quiet
(2022)

No idea what I was in for...
This was one of the most difficult movies I've ever watched, although it was extremely well-acted and realistic.

It definitely sets a precedent ripped from our society of the still-lingering racial and social overtones we still see today.

It started out innocently enough as a girl's get together, but quickly took a very, very dark turn.

I found myself wincing at some of the racist dialogue and hate that spewed from the characters' mouths, which was bad enough, but then, all hell broke loose.

It became more and more difficult to watch as it progressed. I had to look away several times, but told myself to finish the movie. I'm glad I did.

Forget monsters, forget aliens, werewolves and zombies. This is a TRUE HORROR movie.

Anglerfish
(2022)

Weirdest movie ever
I kept watching and watching to try and figure this movie out.

If you're looking for a horror movie, this isn't it.

Very intentionally slow, and I think the acting was deliberately dry.

Lots of bizarre symbolism in this movie was hard to interpret.

A couple in 1906 living out in the middle of nowhere take in a strange woman burying her husband in the creek. Then she seemingly disappears.

Although they use oil lamps, they apparently have electricity, since they have a large radio which never seems to pull in any stations, and what looks like a light bulb outside their house.

Also, the man lights his hand-rolled cigarette with a Zippo-style lighter, which wasn't invented until 1933.

Lots of strange sequences that made little sense. But I didn't hate it.

Voyagers
(2021)

I don't understand the negativity
I don't watch movies to pick out mistakes or be critical. I watch movies to be entertained.

Sure, there were some obvious gaps in the science, but all in all, I enjoyed this film because it took me away from regular life.

I thought the special effects, graphics and hardware were first-rate, the acting was above average, and the sentiment behind the movie was felt, at least by me.

So what if it was a dystopian modern-day Lord of the Rings? LOTS of movies could compare with that topic.

I just try to lose myself in the story and enjoy the ride.

Real life is bad enough as it is.

I give this movie 8 stars...not the very best, but certainly not the worst.

Avatar: The Way of Water
(2022)

Slow start, GREAT finish!
This is clearly CGI at its absolute best. The beginning was a bit slow and takes a little while to get through, but it makes it up way over my expectations! I literally cried during the movie in several places.

You will experience anger, sadness, laughter and fright.

Breathtaking views of the planet, both above ground and below the seas, strange and beautiful creatures and plant life, solid plot and strong, beautiful characters, I would highly recommend this film to anyone who likes this type of science fiction!

You really need to watch the first one to completely understand this one. We'll worth it!

Grimcutty
(2022)

Not a bad little flick.
Pretty watchable. Unique concept. The Grimcutty creature wasn't particularly scary, more cartoonish than anything, but I thought it was well-acted and the premise was symbolic of the negative influence some social media has on society. And on our young people in particular, .

The movie was better than I thought it would be, and as a parent, I identified with the movie parents trying to protect their kids from the dark side of the internet.

I think this movie was a a fresh look at the subject of the overuse of our phones, tablets and laptops these days.

We tend to panic if we don't have our devices at our sides at all times, after all.

Implanted
(2021)

I liked it quite a bit.
I actually thought this was a well-done movie. Although this topic is covered in other films of this genre, being set in current times made this more interesting to me.

While I wouldn't exactly call it dystopian, it certainly rides the fringe.

I also thought Michelle Girolami played the part perfectly. She was sincere, her tears were on cue and convincing, and I think she carried the rest of the cast.

No movie is perfect, but some folks set out to flag every little nuance that bothers them.

I watch movies with an open mind because I want to enjoy them, and I enjoyed this one. I'd recommend!

Last Survivors
(2021)

I don't get all the negativity...
I thought it was pretty good, really. Original concept.

People tend to focus on things they can criticize to make them feel important, but to me, movies are for ENTERTAINMENT, so I tend to view them like that, and I liked this movie.

Of course, there are some holes in the plot. Every movie has them.

Just get a snack, sit back and try to enjoy this movie.

No Exit
(2022)

Tense thriller! Extremely good.
This is one of those nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat thrillers with lots of twists and turns.

Acting is superb throughout.

Havana Rose Liu has the standout performance, however.

I was overall impressed with this movie, although there were a few things one has to overlook to make it a bit more logical.

But I will say, I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes movies in this genre. One of the best.

Dennis Haysbert, the guy from the Allstate commercials, is also fantastic.

Picciridda - Con i piedi nella sabbia
(2019)

Wow...moved to tears
This movie is so powerful.

Yes, it's slow in spots, but you must connect with the characters to enjoy it.

I found it amazing. The little girl comes to terms with her situation, her growing into adulthood, and a certain relative she shouldn't have trusted. In the end, she learns the truth about her family's 'other side' and seeks the strength to move on.

I loved it.

The Adam Project
(2022)

Loved it
Great cast, superb acting, special effects were awesome.

Plenty of holes in the plot, but still was a surprisingly good movie.

Walker Scobell was fantastic as the young Adam.

Great sort of super-hero-humor-ish vibe throughout.

I will watch it again, and I rarely watch movies more than once.

No Witnesses
(2021)

Don't bother
Voices/microphones are very unnatural sounding.

Portions of the movie cannot be seen because of how darkly they were shot.

Acting is just so-so.

I made it about halfway through.

Black Mountain Side
(2014)

Pretty good movie - I was surprised
I thought the cast did a great job. The acting was very natural, the suspense built up really well. Yes, it's pretty slow-paced, but a movie like this takes time to build, and there was plenty of craziness in between.

Only one thing drove me absolutely nuts in this movie: here are these guys in sub-zero temperatures and there must have been almost ten times someone would walk in or out of a building and LEAVE THE FREAKING DOOR OPEN! My dad would have thrown a fit....just sayin'.

Windcroft
(2007)

Great movie on a budget!
I was pleasantly surprised with this flick.

The acting and special effects were very good, all things considered.

The ending left us hanging with a few too many loose ends a bit, but that was the only real problem I had with the movie.

Sometimes, you just want to see justice served, and that was not the case.

There is some violence, bloodshed, etc., but nothing too terrible.

I feel this movie has a lot going for it. I mean, it's not Citizen Kane, LOL, but not a bad way to kill an hour and a half.

Laundry Day
(2016)

Crazy realistic movie!
I absolutely loved this movie. The characters are very believable, gritty, unwashed but lovable.

The movie is sad, funny, charming, sweet, and totally watchable. A great look into the underbelly of one of my favorite cities.

Free Guy
(2021)

Surprisingly excellent!
I watched this in the theater with my 14-year-old son, thinking it was going to be lacking substance, but I went because I do like Ryan Reynolds.

I was completely blown away! This movie had a lot of contemporary feel to it, embracing our technological world, and the endless possibilities of AI.

I even teared up a little bit at the end. One of the best movies I've seen this year!

In the Earth
(2021)

Read the reviews...and click away from it!
This movie follows the old adage of, "you can't judge a book by its cover." How I wish I had read the reviews before I sat down to watch this movie. The movie poster and its synopsis looked pretty cool. Unfortunately, it made absolutely no logical sense, no real direction or plot...Just a lot of grisly scenes stuck together.

The telling point in this was that I had to get up to answer the door, and forgot to hit "pause" when I went upstairs. I came back down to continue watching it probably 20 minutes later, and it was as if I had never walked out of the room. The same mindless mess was still going on.

Sin
(2021)

I just...couldn't.
This movie appeared to have had a budget of about $19.95. The grainy overlays, coupled with the incredibly annoying voice of the DJ/announcer person, and add to that the bland acting, and goofy "entity," well, I just couldn't.

I didn't make it halfway through the movie.

A Classic Horror Story
(2021)

It was, well...different.
I give credit to the plot, and I get it, it was an amalgamation of different movies and horror genres, but some of the acting was subpar, and some of the characters were simply annoying.

Any really, if I were getting my eyes or tongue cut out, I would be screaming loudly enough that people in the next county would hear it. The victims whimpered and hollered a little, but didn't even put up much of a fight.

It was okay. It could have been better.

No need to sit through it twice.

The Dead Center
(2018)

Pretty decent movie, actually.
I always go in to a horror/thriller flick with an open mind. I realize some folks are way more particular than I am, but I really enjoyed this one. The plot was a bit different than the usual which is a plus, and was well acted throughout. A few jump scares, but nothing too disturbing, although the cadaver scenes were very realistic and all the effects were well done. It has a somewhat grainy atmosphere, which adds to the overall creepiness. It kept my attention, and I thought it was a great little movie.

I Care a Lot
(2020)

Great plot with twists.
I can't understand all the negative reviews. It's entertainment, not a documentary, after all. I certainly wouldn't label this title a comedy, though, but there's a darkly amusing atmosphere about it. Aside from a few overlooked holes in the plot, I found this movie to be really entertaining. As soon as I noticed Peter Dinklage in the cast, I had to see it. Of course, you will absolutely HATE Rosamund Pike's character, and she pulls it off without a hitch. What the heck? I liked it. See for yourself.
