Crank
(2006)

My Vote For Best Picture Of 2006
Crank gets my vote for best picture of 2006, and I say that with absolutely no sarcasm or hesitation.

From the first moments of this film to the credits, Crank never stops...not for a moment. It is extremely fast paced, both in action and story, which is very fitting considering the plot.

Unlike most cookie cutter action flicks, Crank truly offers something for everyone. It is absolutely without question the funniest action flick I have ever seen. The reaction from the crowd in the theater was stronger than any Hollywood blockbuster I've been to. Quentin Tarrintino fans will especially love this movie.

Chev Chelios is phenomenal, as usual, and the rest of the cast delivers a top notch performance. I truly cannot say enough good things about this film. If you are in any way a fan of either action or comedy, you need to see this movie.

Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism
(2004)

A Fair And Balanced Review Of The Fox Opinion Channel
Fair minded Americans agree that Fox News is an embarrassment to journalism. It is a network with absolutely no journalistic integrity, and does little more than to promote the right wing agenda in the United States.

Outfoxed does an excellent job of exposing Fox News (as if it wasn't blatantly obvious) for what it really is: a propaganda driven network designed to push not news, but Rupert Murdoch's opinions. Outfoxed gives countless examples of the tabloid journalism and opinion reported as fact that Fox News has been guilty of since their first broadcast.

Fantastic documentary. I would recommend this to all Americans who seek truth from their news media, instead of what amounts to little more than a parody of real news, on par with The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live, only to the other extreme.

Red Riding Hood
(2003)

I Want My 90 Minutes Back
I rented this movie during a trip to the video store in which I was searching for some cheesy horror flicks. Unfortunately, one of my selections happened to be Red Riding Hood.

First and foremost, the music in this film is quite possibly the worst I have ever seen used in any motion picture, mainstream or independent. The director had selected a 2 minute long show tune musical number that repeats the same lines at least a dozen times throughout the movie. It's as if he has an effeminate brother-in-law aspiring to a Broadway career. Absolutely terrible and pointless... by far the worst use of music in any motion picture that I have ever seen.

The repetitive and annoying music would have been bad enough on it's own to ruin a good movie, but Red Riding Hood is FAR from even being a halfway decent flick. It stars a little girl who may one day may grow up to be a decent actress, but as of the filming of Red Riding Hood, she has a long way to go before she sounds like anything above what you would expect at a middle school play. The grandmother delivers a good performance, and is just about the only watchable character you'll find. As far as my tastes, I can handle the bad acting. It's the predictable and boring plot that ruins this one for me.

In the interest of not posting spoilers, I won't talk about the "twist" at the end, if you can call it that, but I will say that the only way you won't see it coming by the first 20 minutes is if you have fallen asleep from boredom. Death scenes are unimpressive and one scene of violence is lifted directly from Misery.

Maybe it wasn't quite 90 minutes long, but sitting through this movie felt like an eternity. I want at least 90 minutes of my life back... possibly more for the time it took me to explain to others just how bad this movie really is.

The Gingerdead Man
(2005)

Look Elsewhere For A Good Cheesy Horror Flick
Some movies fall under the category of "so bad, it's funny". The Gingerdead Man is not one of these movies.

I rented this move with the expectation that it wasn't going to be a cinematic classic. I simply expected a cheesy horror flick with bad acting and special effects that would be good for a laugh. Sadly, it failed to deliver on even these low expectations.

The plot of this movie is the fact that a killer's ashes were mixed into a gingerbread cookie mix by the killer's mother, and then sent to a bakery; the location of his crimes for which he was caught and executed. It's a good thing I read the back of the box, because it is the only record of this happening. The movie has cut all scenes involving the mother or the ashes being mixed in with the gingerbread cookie mix. Instead, a cookie simply comes to life with absolutely no attempt at an explanation. There aren't even any deleted scenes on the DVD to explain why a cookie managed to come to life out of the oven with the soul of a deceased killer.

The DVD box is far more entertaining than the actual movie, and does a better job of explaining the plot. I know the box is appealing, and you may be thinking that you can't go wrong with a cheesy horror flick starring Gary Busey, but Busey's role is so limited that he adds nothing to this flick.

I know it's tempting...but just walk past this one.

Chao Zhou xiao han
(1982)

Best Dollar I Ever Spent
Found this gem at the Movie Gallery in Hazleton, PA. They were selling off all of their old VHS tapes. This is definitely one of the funniest kung fu comedies I have ever seen.

The story centers around "Little Fatty", who is attempting to collect the bounty on a fugitive, and his many failings in accomplishing this mission. "Little Fatty" studied the toad form of kung fu, and opens the movie bowing to a toad in the woods while repeating the words "I worship the toad", and it only gets funnier from here.

If you manage to find this, definitely pick it up. Good luck, because I haven't found it anywhere else.

Zoo TV: The Television Series
(1997)

What Ever Happened To Zoo TV
One afternoon when I was 17, I was channel surfing and happened upon what looked to be propaganda designed to start a revolution among America's youth. I was captivated by a brilliant piece of video that explained to viewers how big business rolls out high priced trends to keep middle class young Americans in check and in their pocket. It was the first and last time I ever saw Zoo TV.

In a moment of nostalgia, I attempted to find anything I could relating to Zoo TV online through various shopping, streaming video and fan websites. Much to my dismay, the only thing I was able to find was items and footage relating to the U2 tour of the same name.

I can't tell you much about Zoo TV, except to say that if you get an opportunity to watch an episode, take it. It is most certainly thought provoking and interesting...definitely worth a look. I only wish I had the opportunity to see more of it so that this review could have been more detailed.

Lady in the Water
(2006)

Overrated Film From An Overrated Writer/Director
"Lady In The Water" seems to be little more than a poor excuse to stroke Shyamalan's own ego by writing himself into the script as a noble writer who's work will change the world so much that he becomes a martyr. The story seems like he's making things up as he goes along, with new rules and characters in the fairy tale surrounding the "lady" every ten minutes.

Paul Giamatti did an outstanding job in making an absolutely terrible and pointless script watchable. He is an incredible talent, and certainly deserves to be recognized for his work. As for Shyamalan, he has always been hit and miss. His supporters will sing the praises of even the most average and ordinary of films (Signs, Unbreakable) as well as his heavily Rod Serling inspired movie twists (The Village, The Sixth Sense), but Lady In The Water falls under neither category. It is not average, nor does it have a twist of any kind, stolen or otherwise.

With this film, Shyamalan attempted to create an "ET" for a new generation, and failed miserably. I would compare this film to unsatisfying sex , in that it feels like a lot of buildup with no release (or point) at the end. This film will be all but forgotten by this time next year.

I would advise anyone to not bother wasting their time. This film falls flat on every level. When the credits came on screen in my theater, just about everyone in the crowd, including several children, looked around each other and said "was that it?" and "what was the point?". I am left wondering the same.
