Sulla mia pelle
(2018)

Interesting
After taking the time to watch the film, On My Skin, I realized The law enforcement in Italy is not so different from the law enforcement many are forced to endure here in America. Initially Stefano Cucchi was arrested for possession of drugs, but before Stefano can even reach his court date or speak to his lawyer he is seriously beaten by the same officers who made the arrest. From here, the movie follows a very injured Stefano who is eventually hospitalized and is never allowed to speak to his lawyer despite the countless times he asks. The movie also shows his parents and sisters point of view being outside the prison and unable to see their son. Eventually, Stefano succumbs to his injuries and passes away and it is only then Stefano's parents are finally able to see him. This was a very clear example of why the prison system needs to be reworked, and sooner than later. The amount of foul play taking place behind closed doors is unacceptable and inhumane. I hope stories like Stefano Cucchi's continue to be heard and cause a change in our world's corrupt system.

Luna Nera
(2020)

unexpectedly good
When i first flipped to it on netflix i wasnt sure how i would feel about it. This is a good show and i was suprised. I went to just watch one epsiode and watched the whole season. Heres a recap of what happened. The Italian Netflix Series, Luna Nera, showed me that I may be missing out on some really great shows by only watching American television. Luna Nera takes place in 17th century Italy and follows a teenage girl named Ade, as she discovers and learns to accept and use her newfound powers whilst looking out for her younger brother, Valente. The show begins with Ade and her grandmother attempting to deliver a child, however Ade has a premonition that the child is going to die and alerts the mother who accuses both Ade and her grandmother of witchcraft. Ade and her grandmother flee back to their cabin in the woods. While here Ade's grandmother casts a spell on the Book of Kingdoms that causes strong roots to grow from the ground and trap the book. She then tells Ade if something is to happen to her to go into the woods and find the vipers nest. Soon after witch hunters, called the Benandanti, come and take Ade's grandmother away. Ade is left to care for her brother alone and tries going into town to sell a basket in hopes of getting milk in return, however she ends up getting harrassed by the townspeople until the son of the head Benandanti, Pietro, comes to her rescue. Days later Ade tries to stop the Benandanti from burning her grandmother at the stake but she is unable to. They began burning her but fellow witches in the crowd caused it to rain putting out the fire. However, Pietro's father stabs grandmother, finishing the execution. Afterwards, Ade follows grandmother's wishes and her and Valente head into the woods to find the Vipers nest. When they arrive they find a secret passage that leads to a den of witches that happen to be the same witches from grandmother's execution. They go to retrieve grandmother's body and bring it back to the den. We then find out that grandmother was actually Ade's mother the whole time. Janara and Tebe believe that Ade is the chosen one and that she needs to listen to herself to find her powers. While Ade tries to figure out her powers she is also meeting with Pietro with the help of her fellow witch friend Persepolis. She sees Petro numerous times and he asks her to marry him. However Ade ends up having a premonition that Pietro's mother is dying. Confused, Petro flees and then no longer talks to Ade. During this time period, Ade learns how to use her powers and is able to save three witches that had been sentenced to die. Valente ends up running away from the witches' den to kill Pietro's father and both him and Leptis are captured. The rest of the witches then devise a plan to break into the dungeon and save them. However, they end up getting captured as well. They are all sentenced to be executed but before it can happen there is a solar eclipse where Valente suddenly gets powers and saves everyone. We later find out that Valente is actually the chosen one and he is not a boy but a girl. Ade runs away after finding this out and her mom explains that turning Valente into a boy when he was born was the only way to protect him. She cast the spell and it was so powerful it took her youth. Ade, upset, yells at her mother's ghost and causes her to disappear, changing Ade into what looks to be a demon. I wpnder when they will make a season 2 and cannot wait for it.
