The Bourne Supremacy
(2004)

Good, but not as good as it's prequel
This was a good movie, but not as good as The Bourne Identity. The story was good, though predictable, and the acting was good, but there was a lot of really bad camera work. The fight scenes and car chases were tedious and nearly unwatchable, and in this type of film those things are very important. I have heard that they intend to continue the Bourne series with at least one more film. Hopefully they will return to the director of the first, or at least one of the many directors who can film a watchable action scene. The film is definitely worth seeing, but I must admit that I was glad I paid a matinee price.

Otesánek
(2000)

A little slow towards the end, but still very funny
I liked this film very much. As with most comedy/horror films, the plot is fairly absurd. An infertile couple is desperate for a child. When the husband digs up a tree root vaguely resembling a child the woman loves it so much that it comes to life, and life begins to imitate a frightening fairly tale. It gets pretty slow towards the end, and would have been an even better film had it been about 25 minutes shorter. But, the film is great fun to watch, especially the performance of the woman playing Little Otik's mother, who is just insanely funny in the protection of her "son".

It's certainly not the best of it's kind, but it is a hilarious, twisted nightmare of a tale that fans of the genre will likely enjoy.

Lake Placid
(1999)

Hilarious
This is a very funny monster/horror spoof, with many wickedly funny one-liners. I laughed out loud several times. It does a wonderful job of poking fun at one of my favorite types of films, the monster movies of decades past, without becoming demeaning or insulting to fans of the genre. In fact, at times it is as much homage as spoof.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
(2003)

An exciting effects film.
More than most of Weir or Crowe's previous films, this one relies as much on effects and scenery as on the individual performances of the cast. Make no mistake, many of the performances are excellent, but this is an action/adventure film. Unlike many Hollywood action films, the action is pretty realistic, rather than simply graphic. Having seen several films and read several books set during this war, I found the story fairly formulaic, and therefore predictable. But that did not lessen my enjoyment of the film. It was a rollicking high-seas adventure that I found very exciting.

Better Luck Tomorrow
(2002)

Disappointing
It's been done before, and it's been done better. Spoiled, supposedly intelligent, teens acting stupid and illegally and getting away with it. The only twist is that all the teens in this film are Asian American. The characters are stereotyped and somewhat two dimensional. But it's not a total loss. With it's convenient lack of adult intervention or supervision, the film often seems more like an after school special than a feature film. But there is a message there, even it's a message we've heard before.

He ni zai yi qi
(2002)

A delightful film.
I found this a delightful movie. A few of the supporting cast were less than stellar, but the performances of the leads were excellent. The story was fairly predictable, but the ending still brought a tear to my eye.

S.W.A.T.
(2003)

As expected
This is good movie which delivers what it's advertisements provided. Nothing more, nothing less. There are good looking actors, car chases, explosions, fights, etc. Not something you'd go to if you were looking for a deep story, but not a bad diversion on a sweltering summer afternoon either.

Equilibrium
(2002)

Enjoyable, but not believable
The premise of this movie is fairly ridiculous, and the execution even worse. Supposedly the masses are taking drugs that suppress all emotion. So why does the government feel the need to destroy art and literature? People will no emotion would be unable to enjoy the arts, and therefore would have no inducement. Yet, marriage and children are still allowed. Are we to believe that a painting, or a poem, is more likely to induce feeling than one's spouse or child? Either the drug also suppresses logic, or people would see that the whole concept of no emotion preventing murder and war is false, for there are executions, an army and a resistance. Then there is the cleric who shows obvious ambition, and glee at the capture of another "feeling" cleric, and last time I checked, those were emotions. But, given all that, I still rated this file a '7'. Why? Quite simply because I enjoyed watching it. It's illogical and even stupid at times, but it was still a lot of fun to watch.

Simply Irresistible
(1999)

Kinda cute
This movie has a light-hearted and fairly lousy script, but it still has a corny kind of charm that will probably appeal to young girls. I doubt it's something these actors would put at the top of their resume, but it's kind of cute if you don't expect too much.

Star Trek: Nemesis
(2002)

Disappointing
This movie was quite a disappointment. The story really wasn't that bad, I suppose, but the fact that the central plot point was a clone of Capt. Pecard, and an actor was chosen that looked nothing whatsoever like Patrick Stewart was too distracting. Do the film makers actually think that being bald is all it takes? It's made even more ridiculous for fans of the series by the fact that Pecard had a little hair in the earlier episodes.

The Matrix Reloaded
(2003)

Extremely disappointing
After years of waiting, this film is a dismal let down. The effects are less than spectacular, the fight scenes are all the same and so long that they become boring. It's no more fun than watching someone else play a video game, though many games have more story. There are scenes, most notably the tribal orgy scene, that have no explained relationship to the story, and seem glaringly (gratuitously?) out of place. There is no character growth at all, and the ending is predictable, then just silly. In fact, the whole thing just seems like a 2+ hour advertisement for the video game.

A Mighty Wind
(2003)

Not funny
Well, the One Line Summary pretty much says it all. This film simply is not funny, not at all. In fact, it's down right boring, which is so disappointing if you're familiar with the other films made by these guys, which were very funny.

La séparation
(1994)

Lacks a good story
This is a well filmed, well acted, movie, but it lacks a good story. They're separating, it's sad. It would have made a great short, but at 85 minutes it seems too long. The performances are excellent, and the use of mood and color is nice, but that alone is not enough for a good film. At least not for me.

Things Behind the Sun
(2001)

very affecting
This film may not be the best in terms of dialog or form, but it really connected in a way too few movies do. In fact, it's almost too true for it's own good. It's a great film, and I'm glad I saw it, but I'm not sure I ever want to put myself through that again. The emotions brought out in the wonderful performances are so real and affecting, that it's a heart-wrenching and emotionally draining experience to watch this film.

Lucía y el sexo
(2001)

Grabs you
It took me a while to get in to the film, but once it grabbed me, it did not let go. Great performances, and a great job by the director of leading us through the rather twisting (twisted?) story, make for a great film.

The Good Girl
(2002)

A depressing comedy?
I don't think I've ever been so amused and depressed by the same movie before. So much was made of Aniston's performance, and she is good, but she is just one player in a well cast film. In fact, she may have the easiest role in the film, as she is required to play most scenes devoid of expression or emotion. It is the situations that surround her that make the movie so funny, and much credit must be given to the supporting cast for making these situations seem so believable. But it is Aniston's sad character, sick of her surroundings and life, yet unwilling to change it, that makes for a depressing story. Even though there are plenty of laughs while watching the film, it will not leave you with a warm and fuzzy feeling when it's done.

C'est arrivé près de chez vous
(1992)

A good start, then all downhill
This might have made a great short film, for the movie gets off to a good start. It is darkly comic and engaging, but becomes so repetitive and unrealistic that the "mockumentary" style becomes a joke and the content boring. There simply is no story development, and what at first is amusing, simply becomes irritating.

Elling
(2001)

bittersweet and funny
I just loved this movie. It's funny, heartbreakingly so at times, with believably eccentric characters. The antics of two men, the affable titular character and his rather uncouth roommate, who seem to share nothing other than their dysfunctional fear of the world outside their apartment door as they try to find a place for themselves in the world. The movie is hilarious, but also very poignant and real.

Bella Martha
(2001)

Charming
What a charmingly heartfelt and believable movie! The acting is first rate and the story, while not something we've never seen, is wonderfully written with just right amount of humor to be funny, but still touching and believable.

Knockaround Guys
(2001)

Better than expected
I've wanted to see this movie since I saw the trailer a year or so ago, before the release date was moved. After all the delays and the less than favorable reviews, I was skeptical, but given the choices playing in my town, I figured this was as good a choice as any. I thought it was a good movie. Not great, not unpredictable, but good. The acting was a mixed bag. Barry Pepper was excellent. Vin Diesel, Andrew Davoli and Dennis Hopper were all good. Malkovich gave a typically hammy performance and was the weakest link of the group, though Seth Green gave a surprisingly poor performance. I liked the story, though, and thought it was well paced, but a better soundtrack would have been a help in this type of movie. It's not in the class of the great gangster films like Goodfellas or The Godfather, but it didn't suck either.

Sweet Home Alabama
(2002)

Below Expectations
I'm a big fan of Reese Witherspoon, and expected more from this movie. It's too cutesy, too predictable and has too many stereotypes to be called a good film. It does have a some sweet scenes and a few laughs, so I wasn't totally disappointed since I saw the matinee. I think I'd feel ripped off had I paid full price.

The Four Feathers
(2002)

Predictable, but still quite good
This movie is every bit the "sweeping epic" they advertise it to be. It is done on a very grand scale, but I think they did a good job of not letting all the grandeur detract from the story. The film was very well cast. I was especially impressed with Heath Ledger's performance. The only real problem I had with the film is that it's too predictable. There are a few tense moments, but there was nothing that happened that I didn't see coming. But that aside, it was an enjoyable film to watch with sympathetic characters, wonderful scenery, and an interesting story.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding
(2002)

Funny!
For me the best way to judge a comedy is "how funny was it?". This movie is very funny. I haven't laughed out loud so much at a movie in years. And I had plenty of company in the packed theater when I saw it. But best of all, it's a comedy that doesn't draw it's laughs from dirty jokes and sexual innuendo, and that's become all too rare these days. I loved this movie.

Aberdeen
(2000)

Harsh reality
A wonderfully written and acted, but depressing road trip movie. As a favor to her dying mother, a young woman must find her alcoholic father (played by Stellen Skarsgard, who is heart-wrenchingly convincing in the role), who abandoned them when she was a child. As they travel together, they must face both the past and present. But don't expect a Hollywood feel-good reunion movie, this is much more harsh and real.

Love, Honour and Obey
(2000)

Very entertaining
I really liked this movie. The sudden violence, the humor, the cast, the pace, it's all great. The karaoke, and the sexual dysfunction are widely funny touches. I loved it. It has the hip stylish violence of a Richie or Tarantino film, but I thought this a little more real in both characters and story.
