Anbe Sivam
(2003)

Awesome movie, amazing soundtrack
I watched the movie because of the stars - Kamal Hasan and Madhavan. I do not understand Tamil, yet the movie has been so well made that at times you do not feel that you need the dialogs.

In brief, the movie shows two extremely different characters who are forced to spend time together due to circumstances.

The movie tends to slow down in the middle, when it goes into the flashback of Kamal Hasan's life. However, for the most part, it is a pretty sensible piece of art - something that is a rarity in Bollywood. The movie could have been shorter - and that is the only complaint that I have. Otherwise, it is a brilliant idea that has been executed to near perfection.

Kamal Hasan - as always - excels. Madhavan is great, too. The music score was really good.

A must see!

Being Cyrus
(2005)

Just the kind of role that Saif needed
I have always seen Saif Ali Khan as one of the most talented stars of Indian cinema. He is one of the actors who underwent enormous transformation in his career, and is today one of the rare entities in Bollywood who have style with even more substance.

Being Cyrus is not his best performance till date. And yet, it will probably always be remembered as one of his memorable roles because of the dark shades to his character.

The movie boasts of an incredible line of greats from Indian cinema, and a pretty good storyline. I will refrain from making any reference to the storyline since it is bound to give away something about the movie.

Overall, an enjoyable movie and something that you will probably want to watch more than once!

Rang De Basanti
(2006)

In a time when everything in India seems to be influenced by Western culture, this movie takes you back to roots - in a unique way!
I will not discuss the story here - you should watch it :-), but will discuss some things that I really liked about the movie.

The portrayal of characters is very well thought of. Even a superstar like Aamir Khan is not given any special "footage". He, and his friends represents the youth of India - who is struggling to build a future for himself, is frustrated by the system, and the inability to do anything about it. The director's idea - though dramatic -is executed so well that you believe that this is easily possible in real life.

The portrayal of Indian culture - the visit to Punjab and the Golden Temple are simply done in a classy manner. The whole serenity, majesty and elegance of the culture is visible without being loud.

One of the things that really impressed me was that the movie depicted our great freedom fighters as figures of inspiration. And this is done without showing a slightest hint of jingoism or any slur or deprecating statement to any foreign country! The message is clear - the fault in the system is our joint responsibility - and we have enough super heroes in our history to look up to.

The direction is great and editing is of highest quality. One of the real strengths of the movie is the *impact* it tends to leave on you by the time you are done watching it.

BUY THIS MOVIE AND MAKE IT A PART OF YOUR COLLECTION!

Ek Ajnabee
(2005)

Great movie, but still a shame!
The script is a copy of Man on Fire. The movie is a scene-to-scene, dialog-to-dialog translation.

Still, I enjoyed it, but the fact that the movie was so shamelessly copied over from a big Hollywood movie without even a touch of hint of acknowledging that left a really bitter taste in my mouth.

The only positive message I want to convey to the entire crew involved in the movie is this: Look, you had a great looking movie in the end, with slick action shots, fantastic characterization, really stylish look and feel for the movie. So that means you are good. But hey, just spend some extra time, effort and money to write a script yourself - and you will have a winner on your hand next time!

I rate it 8 out of 10 simply it is a good movie to watch. Ethically speaking, this movie should be given a 0 out of 10.

Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets
(2005)

What a shame this even made to theatres
Before I begin lashing out against this movie, I want to clarify that I am not fully against "Indianized" remakes of Hollywood movies - if done nicely and with some common sense, they can turn out to be decent affairs.

But Chocolate shamelessly treads the path of being a horrible movie that was blatantly taken piece by piece from a class act such as the Usual Suspects. Kaante had glimpses of other great Hollywood movies, but still had a "characer". Nothing here.

At the end of the movie, I was left wondering - was the director just an extra-ordinary idiot or was it just the outrageous murder of a great movie that left me pulling my own hair and cursing out loud.

Anil Kapoor - who is a brilliant actor, mind you - was totally wasted in the movie. Ditto for Irfan Khan - who has given some great performances in the past. Arshad Warsi is usually a delight to watch - but not here sirs! The only person for whom this piece of trash suits is Emran Hashmi - who was his terrible self in the movie.

Simply avoid this at all costs - you will be doing yourself a big favor.

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.
(2003)

Real nice comedy
I saw Munnabhai MBBS primarily because of Sunjay Dutt. He has always been good in comedy, and his movies make you laugh without having to take help of double meaning dialogues or crossing the line into bitchiness. Ofcourse, Sunjay Dutt has to have a gangster connection, only then the movie can sell. He is the eternal gangster and those roles fit him well, no body can deny that. But where you really have to give director the full points is that he saw the comedic talents of the junior Dutt and put them into a simplistic, well made movie.

All the characters, be it "Circuit" (Arshad Warsi) or the "Dean", or Sunil Dutt, have been portrayed well enough in the movie.

Some of the scenes, like the one where Sanjay Dutt "rags" the seniors make you laugh out from the heart, because this is something which every fresher in the college dreams of.

I think, the movie deserves full points for direction, story, acting, nice title.... This movie was a real treat to watch when most of the other Hindi movies (especially the over-hyped stuff) turn out to be below average.

10 out of 10.

Red Dragon
(2002)

You can feel the fear
I saw this movie the day it opened. And I went for it because of Ed Norton. But I have to say that everybody - Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes, Ed Norton (of course!!)- just excel in this movie. The tension builds slowly - and you can feel the fear and anxiety that the FBI agent Graham has while he tries hard to figure out the mystery bout the new series of killings. I am not going to harp about the story of the movie here. But just wish to add that this is a movie that is going to stay in the memories more so because of excellent performances rather than a great story line!!

Highly recommended.

Payback
(1999)

Cool, slick, stylish thriller
I have seen this movie more than a dozen times. It makes you laugh and the "quotes" narrated by Mel Gibson in the background are too good.

Story is very good and Mel Gibson is amazing as Porter.

Must See.

Fight Club
(1999)

New concept....
> I had heard a lot about Fight Club, and the movie turned out to be much > better than I had expected. Partially because of superb performances from Ed > Norton and Brad Pitt. The narration by Ed Norton lends this movie a unique > touch and his style of saying everything - from serious to funny - in a > monotone gets on to you after a while. There is a twist in the end, I wont > reveal it. Overall, the gloomy look and different way to look at life is > interesting. But for me, I liked the movie more because of the great acting, > rather than the content of the movie. > > Interesting to watch - if you havent watched it yet, go for > it!!

Company
(2002)

One of the best ever movies on Bombay underworld!!
Terrific performances from Mohanlal, Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi and a slick, stylish picture about the underworld make this movie a must see. Hats off to Ram Gopal Verma. The direction, story line, cinematography - every aspect is brilliant and the movie on a whole is very gripping and fast paced. My personal favorite character in the movie is Mohanlal who plays a commissioner and I guess he is one of the coolest cops ever shown on Indian screen.

I give Company 10 out of 10.
