All the other seasons start off with a Christmasyi feel and ambiance. Not so with Season 5. Firstly there is much too much about Mrs. Hall and her rude son, that no one knows nor cares about. The whole episode revolved around a dumb fox, some diseased pigeons, and Mrs. Hall. She's fine in her role as housekeeper and friend. But to give her the entirity of the episode was not only a disappointment, but it had zero Christmas feel to it until the last 2 minutes of the show. Badly done, writers. Next time remember that it's supposed to be a Christmas episode, and stick to the formula.
Also, seeing as Tristan and James both survived the war, it wouldn't have been unrealistic for Hall's son to have been killed, seeing as millions of young soldiers were.
Anyway, please keep Mrs. Hall's character where it belongs - not up front, stealing the entire oxygen of the show.
So disappointing, as I love the other 4 seasons' Christmas episodes.

I get that she felt ignored by her kids and she was in a lousy marriage, but to disappear without any word, and then not to even consider that the police and family would be looking for her, is beyond reasonable. Bening was Exec Producer on this, so there's no excuse for the dumbness of this show - she in real life was part of it, just like her character who never suspected that letting a complete stranger move in was not normal.
Her manly performance was pretty hard to take as well - not sure what's happened to her. But she and Sam Neill didn't add much to this series. Neil should have stuck with his Australian accent, especially considering the fact that his character is actually from there. Adults don't lose accents when they move to another country and he should have known this and told the makers of the series. He sounded like he had a stroke with a deep raspy voice, struggling to say his lines. He's usually very good, but trying to sound American just didn't work.
Overall, I did enjoy the series, even though I figured out the ending by episode 2. It was so obvious - mom feels invisible, the kids are ignoring her (and rightfully so for what she did to Troy and Stan). So she just ups and leaves as though law enforcement and family didn't exist.
Could have been better with more incentive for her to run away like that.
