Night Fright
(1967)

Where to begin?
It had a budget of $18,000. That in itself gives you an idea of what to expect. The male teens look like they are in their 30's. The acting is so wooden the trees seem more animated. The lighting is terrible. I'm surprised people didn't sue it for eye strain. The only redeeming scene was seeing the Coca Cola machine in the restaurant. That's probably what cost the most in this film as I'm sure Coke didn't want their name associated with this turkey. It's so bad it's not even bad good. I wish I could get back the 85 minutes of my life that I wasted watching this crap.

Booky & the Secret Santa
(2007)

Canadian and Christmas nostalgia at its best
This movie is a true joy to watch as much for the story as it is for the memories of Christmases past. Growing up in Montreal I remember fondly how our family looked forward to receiving the Eaton's Christmas catalogue and dreaming of making our Christmas list for Santa. Simpson's also produced a Christmas catalogue later to be called Simpson/Sears and then simply Sears. This movie and A Christmas Story are truly classic nostalgia. They bring back such wonderful childhood memories when life was simpler and the joy of Christmas filled the air. It is more than just sentimental but a part of our history. Enjoy them both!

Kingsman: The Secret Service
(2014)

A waste of time, money, talent and taste
This has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen. It mocks so many things I don't know where to begin. Samuel Jackson's imitation of 50 Cent is a good place to start. His sidekick's ode to Oscar Pistorius is another example of bad taste.

It mocks common sense, viewer intelligence, God, the Church, James Bond, good actors, good story telling and the list goes on and on.

I wish I could get back the two hours I wasted watching this piece of crap. The action makes no sense, the violence makes no sense, the whole story makes no sense. It is like an odyssey to nowhere.

With the amount of talent in this film I was expecting something spectacular and truly entertaining. What I got was a boring, stupid and totally ridiculous scenario that goes nowhere.

The Christmas Candle
(2013)

A truly great Christmas film!
I was so pleasantly surprised by this film, though most of the cast was unknown to me. It was nonetheless a truly remarkable and inspirational film.

The movie is based on a novel by Max Lucado. For those of you unfamiliar with Max Lucado, he is a prominent Christian author and speaker that I've had the pleasure of communicating with. A truly genuine and kind man.

The film takes place in a small English town at the turn of the 20th century, when electricity was still in its infancy. Candles were a cheap source of light and heat and predominantly used by many people at that time.

As a Christian what I found truly remarkable and inspirational is the hands on approach of the Pastor. He showed that we all can be the answer to someone's prayer and truly represent our Lord on earth in such simple ways.

You don't have to be a Christian to enjoy this film. However, it will surely touch your heart and soul if you let it.

True Grit
(2010)

What a waste of talent
I've always been a fan of Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, but in this remake of the John Wayne classic it lacks any real intensity and sense of adventure.

Bridges' practically sleeps through his performance. His character does not embody any of the real grit, toughness, intensity and humour that Wayne brought to it. Matt Damon on the other hand brought in a different kind of Texas Ranger character with less humour and romance and a more realistic sense of duty than Campbell did.

Mattie's character lacks the natural incompetence a girl her age would have had that Kim Darby brought to it. She played it with a sense of determination and natural humour that one would expect. Steinfeld just doesn't have it. She's too precise and self assured. In the original, Mattie whipped out her threat from her lawyer Daggert like a pistol. That in itself was quite humorous. Her sense of strength and growing confidence was dependent on her lawyer and on Rooster. Steinfeld was simply not believable.

Even the ending is dark, melancholy and lacklustre. I did not like this film at all.

The Cabin in the Woods
(2011)

A complete waste of time, talent, and technology
I've seen some bad horror films in my day, but this piece of $hit takes the cake. It is totally nonsensical, utterly ridiculous, grossly exaggerated, completely absurd and a blood fest, no, a blood orgy is more like it. And those are its good points.

The premise is so tired and worn. As I watched the girl descend into the dark basement alone I knew then it was schlock. What woman in her right mind would do that in such a creepy old, dark house in the middle of the woods? But alas our brave heroine whom earlier was so grossed out by a piece of art that she had to put a blanket over it, now has grown a pair of balls.

There is no way any review can spoil this movie as it has spoiled itself.

I feel like suing the producers to get the 95 minutes of my life back that I wasted watching this crap.

And that Signourey Weaver and Bradford Whitley would even lend their names to this made me lose all respect for them as actors. Times must really be hard for them to sink this low.

Skyfall
(2012)

The Best Bond Yet!
I was really wondering where they would be taking Bond as it seemed they were either hit or miss. Casino Royale was excellent but Quantum of Solace was lacklustre and campy capitalizing on the green trend. Then they came up with Skyfall and it is a gem. The cinematography is simply outstanding. The breathtaking skylines are superb.

The action starts right from the get go and it is both an exhilarating and heady ride. I've been a fan of Bond since day one and have loved them all, some more than others of course. But this one takes us back to the earlier style of Sean Connery where it was more intellectual and exotic and less flash and dash. Craig uses his usual physical stamina, strength and skills to accent the character's raw power and persona rather than an arsenal of high tech gadgetry.

Barbara Broccoli is doing a fine job of carrying on the tradition of Bond. I can only hope they stay this stylish, exciting and imaginative.

Christmas Lodge
(2011)

Bland and forgettable
This movie had no competent script, the actors were sleepwalking through their parts, there was no chemistry between the romantic leads and all the actors seemed like they were cardboard cutouts. There was no conviction from anyone in this. It was totally unbelievable.

The settings and scenery were nice. But there was no sense that Christmas was even anticipated in any way. No snow on the ground, no lights or decorations anywhere, no Christmas music, no Christmas spirit, this film was totally lacking in life.

God and Christianity were poorly interpreted in this vehicle and the whole premise was lacking substance. It had a lot of potential and so much could have been done with these actors and the setting had they perhaps had the right director, but in the end it was very boring and forgettable.

I had such high hopes before watching this that it would be a memorable and heartwarming story. It was a big disappointment.

Bob Gratton, ma vie/My Life
(2007)

Bob Gratton Ma Vie My Life Saison 1, 2 and 3
Julien Poulin's 3 movies about his character Elvis Gratton were extremely hilarious, but his TV show of a day in the life of Bob Gratton (the same movie character) is simply brilliant and one of the funniest things you'll ever see on TV.

From his home life with his girlfriend Maggie; his relationship with his best friend Meo, to his antics at work at his garage, to his attempts at being an influence at the chamber of commerce. Bob Gratton is a lean, mean comedic dream team. The cast of character actors who join him each week simply compliment his own character's style.

His brand of humour puts him in a league of his own, but it is done with such incredible comic genius that it will leave you literally crying with laughter. I bought all the movies and the TV series now available on DVD. Don't miss a single episode. Poulin is one of the funniest comedians I've ever seen. Simply fantastic!

The Disappearance of Flight 412
(1974)

Interesting, but void of facts, I recommend another film that's real
This movie is an interesting premise of what might happen if military pilots were to come upon the sighting of a UFO. But other than that it is all speculation.

If you want to see probably the most remarkable movie and UFO encounter of all time watch the movie titled, The UFO Incident starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons. It is based on facts and the real events that happened to Betty and Barney Hill in the 60's.

What is truly amazing about this film is that a planetary map that Betty Hill remembered seeing she was able to draw from memory under hypnosis. Many years later in the 1980's I believe, scientists discovered the very existence and exact configuration of those planets, which were virtually unknown until then. Don't take my word for it, look it up and see for yourself.

My advice is always wear clean shorts as you never know when you might be picked up by aliens too! LOL

War of the Worlds
(2005)

Pointless gore, lousy acting and senseless premise
The 1950's original is far superior in story, acting and setting. Even the special effects still stand up today.

This movie was a typical remake, poorly thought out, useless characters and gratuitous gore. The humans are ground up like hamburger only to be defecated like shredded wheat. And the point to this fiasco? They aren't eaten, they aren't used for fuel, so these aliens just like making sausage grindings? Utter nonsense.

Tom Cruise sleeps his way through this. Dakota Fanning screams like a Banshee enough to make one cheer for the aliens to final squeeze the life out of this annoying child. The alien ships seem to always appear to come out of the ground or the sea. Why? They were to come from outer space. Hello! Is any body home??? What was Spielberg smoking when he made this?

I was thoroughly disappointed and still think the original is a classic that will remain one for many, many years to come.
