Coralie Fargeat's film has something special that I never thought I would experience again, disgust, repulsion and a lot of pity for the countless cases in women or even men where they have their identity crisis or when they are no longer the center of attention in Hollywood, The Substance manages to be a kind of tribute to several classics of cinema, especially the Body Horror of David Cronenberg as the Fly or the legendary Carrie by Bryan de Palma.
As for the actors, I can't say they are bad choices because I genuinely think they chose the cast well, Demi Moore is a versatile actress where she knows how to consume her character in despair, anger and imbalance as in the same case of Sarah Margaret who can consolidate with a very scary performance as tender and let's not even talk about the great Dennis Quaid, it would have been better to see Ray Liotta in the original script, but rest in peace they gave us another great actor.
Without going into spoilers the ending and those last 30 minutes were so bloody and brutal that it will be impossible for me to forget it for a while, under my own interpretation the film talks about the crisis of the forties or even how the standards of beauty have corrupted society with the facade of covering your true personality under a very pretty false mask, I have no doubt but it is a film worthy of all its accolades and for my taste demi Moore deserves to be nominated for the ocsars or the Golden globs.
