Duck Dodgers
(2003)

Cool Show; One episode is based entirely on Star Trek
This is a cool series that takes old characters and uses them to spoof Alien, TNG/VOY, and countless other sci-fi shows. The animation is well done, and the voices are true to the characters.

I think that it is great for older kids and adults because of some of the inside jokes that may confuse. However, if you know a bit about popular culture, you will see lots of cool gags and references to modern TV and film. I especially like the design of ships, as the earth ships are very classically styled and the Martian ships are kind of like Akira class vessels from Star Trek.

The episode "The Fudd" is based on the concept of the Borg from Star Trek in every way. It was cool to see Trek being used in such a funny way.

Super Size Me
(2004)

A very informative film
***No real spoilers ahead, as it is a documentary!***

This was a great movie looking at the effects of fast food on a persons health.

I know where it is coming from because I used to weigh 230 pounds (I am a barely 5'8" male) and lost 100 of them by cutting out bad fast food, as well as pasta, rice and other assorted heavy foods.

After viewing this, my wife did not want to eat McDonalds again. and was amazed my the content of the McNuggets (a staple food while she was pregnant, in addition to the fries) and how they are made. One thing to do when you rent this is go to the bonus features and play the "smoking fry" feature, where various McDonalds items are put in glass jars and left for 10 weeks. The fries progress will amaze you!

Overall, if you can handle a bit of grossness (completely necessary to get the point across)and medical footage, this is a great fun movie to see.

I want to get the DVD after seeing it!

Dawn of the Dead
(2004)

That was Great!!
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD* I just got home from seeing this movie on a day off school, and I was impressed. This was one of the best remakes that I have ever seen. This movie had you on the edge of your seat even before the opening credits, and it never let you calm down. It was much more tightly done than the original, as the 97 minute running time was considerably less than the up to two and a half hour original, depending on what version you see. The one change was that there was less munching of people and more graphic gunshots shown, especially the death of gun shop owner Andy. There was even some celebrity cameos of sorts, as someone shot "Jay Leno" and "Burt Reynolds" in the head. Overall, a great movie worth seeing multiple times. P.S. Can't wait for the special edition DVD of this movie.

Night of the Living Dead
(1990)

Good remake of the classic
Often, remaking a classic is not recommended (eg: Psycho) but sometimes it works, and this is a good example. The acting was great as "Candyman" star Tony Todd was a welcome Ben (He even looked like he was holding a hook the first time you see him) and Patricia Tallman from "Babylon 5" was great as a more fearless Barbara.

The gore was tame for my standards, but was tasteful in its presentation of gore. One would expect more gore in a Tom Savini Film, but perhaps it was better suited to a less gory treatment.

<SPOILER AHEAD> The only thing that bugged me was hot Ben became a zombie in the end after locking himself in the cellar. He killed the Helen zombie and locked himself in, so who else was down there? <SPOILER END>

Overall a fun, scary film.

The Fog
(1980)

Great horror film, but why the R rating?
This was a great film that emphasized suspense over gore. There was little to no violence in the film, and the eerie atmosphere was excellent. The acting was great by Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, and Curtis' mother Janet Leigh, making for a powerful ensemble cast. Even the ghosts in the fog were well acted (mostly by the effects people and crew members). The direction was also very well done, and was paced in a way that made the terror gradually rise, and left you at the edge of your seat. The score (done by John Carpenter's own band)was great as well. The one thing that confused me was the reason for the R rating, which was not necessary. There was only one scene of any type of gore, which lasted all of a few seconds. The violence was less than most modern films that get PG-13 ratings today, and there was almost no language to speak of. It might have been rated R for the terror element of it, but that should not be a reason for the rating. Overall, the film was well done and well worth the rental. If you are getting the movie, get the special edition DVD with all of the special features, and look out for the easter egg on the special features page.

Hellraiser: Hellseeker
(2002)

What a waste of time
I rented the movie because I thought that bringing Ashley Laurence would be a welcome surprise and world bring some life into the franchise. Boy was I wrong. They put her in the movie for very little time, and used the Hellraiser name and back story to tell some seeming unrelated story. One of the only good points of the movie was to see Dean Winters from OZ do another role. Other than that, there was no really good actors in the movie. As for the Cenobites, they were few and far between, and Pinhead made only the briefest of appearances, and said some stupid lines with none of the feeling for the first few movies. This movie made Showgirls look good, and should not be seen by anyone.

Phantoms
(1998)

Fun rip off of somepast sci-fi greats
This film was a fascinating melding of various classics and not-so-classics of the creature feature genre done with style. It did exactly what a good B-movie Sci-fi should do: Rip off better films and do it knowingly with tongue firmly in cheek. The cast was interesting and had decent star power for the grade of motion picture (film legend Peter O'Toole, "Scream 2" Star Liev Schreiber, Ben Affleck and "Boston Publics" Nicky Katt"), except for Rose McGowan, who, as talented as she is, was way too old to play a 14-year-old. It was also good to see Ben Affleck not trying to win awards in some silly Michael Bay movie. Whoever did the makeup effects must have seen 1989's "Leviathan" and the script had elements of the movies "Leviathan," "The Thing," "Virus" and even the remake of "The Blob" (the final scene had shots that were exactly the same, minus the snow machine, of course) In short, if you are kicking back and want to see something with some cool effects but not much thought, rent this and have some fun.

Special Unit 2
(2001)

Fresh new series with a great sense of humor
I found out about the show just a few months ago, and I love it. Despite what other comments have stated, it is not Men in Black the live action series, as the subjects are links, not aliens. It is a great idea for a show that the missing links have been identified and they are on the rampage in Chicago. The chemistry is great between the leads, and anything involving Carl the gnome and his theft habits is hilarious. The sense of humor is the defining characteristic of the show, and is like nothing a sci-fi addict like me had ever seen. It is fresh and original, and the clever scripting is perfect for the show. The best episodes are the ones where the leads are under the influence of a link, and they are not themselves. It shows what great actors the producers chose for the series, as they demonstrate their amazing versatility. The effects are great, and the production is much better than some of the series on tv. Overall, this this show is a gem and should not be missed by any dedicated sci-fi fan.

Final Destination
(2000)

logic and scares: well done!
<NOTE: THIS REVIEW HAS NO SPOILERS> When I first heard of the film, people told me that it started out good, but turned into routine Slasher mode after a while, but it was different than that. The coolest thing was that the killer was death itself, which put it in a class above most Slashers. Devon Sawa and Ali Larter put in more than just the standard teen flick performance, and the violence was gory at times but not over the top. If you want to see a good movie that has a cool decapitation and a good plot, see this movie. And watch the opening credits, because there is a cool indication of its Canadian filming location.
