Raël: The Last Prophet
(2024)

Ultimate delusional guru !
Raël is definitely the ultimate for delusional and for gullible, naive followers.

It's not the usual guru sect.

This sect goes way over the top and is still going after nearly 50 years.

What's different about Raël?

Well, this Frenchman claimed that he was taken to another planet to meet the creators of humans.

Not enough you say?

When on the other planet, he met all the main prophets, including Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha, etc... Still not enough for you?

Raël claimed they cloned a human being !

That was so controversial the US passed a law to ban any human cloning.

Raël even had a senate hearing where he testified.

This Netflix documentary series is a rare one where it's just the right length.

I enjoyed this documentary because .... honestly , I have never seen such a high level of gullibility, even for sects !

Maestro
(2023)

Great acting but way, way too long.
There's absolutely no question that Bradley Cooper gave everything, as an actor, in this movie.

The make up is particularly very impressive. Bradley Cooper is almost unrecognisable ! The make up is that good.

However, unfortunately, the movie is far too long and becomes tedious.

I would have liked to see this movie say 85- 90 minutes long. Not any longer.

This is one of the main weaknesses of the movie.

Another one is way too much focus on his relationships.

I would have liked to see other aspects of the character.

At some point, I wasn't sure if it was a docudrama or documentary.

Overall, was left underwhelmed.

Dom Hemingway
(2013)

Surprisingly good !
Admittedly, I'm not a fan of British movies. However, there's one here and there that I enjoy watching ... especially if it offers something different.

I didn't know much about Jude Law before, in fact I thought because of the first name it was a woman !

However, in this movie, Jude Law is doing a very impressive job playing this character.

The character is one of a very brutally violent man who can show at times that he has a heart... especially in relation to his estranged daughter and a woman whom he saved her life.

Storyline is pretty good as it evolves in a different way the viewer would have expected.

Screenplay is very, very impressive... particularly about Dom's almost poetic soliloquies on how he will kill someone and of course in the opening scene description of his penis !

Pain Hustlers
(2023)

Don't watch before bedtime !
This movie is polarising, no question about it. The subject is controversial. Fentanyl. Big pharma. Doctors and scripts.

I started to watch it and at first I thought it was a documentary. It's not.

I nearly pulled out at the beginning. However, the storyline of this young woman who wanted to survive by becoming a sales rep got my attention.

Her struggles, her meteoric rise to fortune from her down on her luck situation.

Casting is very good, quite believable characters although it's perhaps a caricature of the industry and the opioid crisis ? That I don't know.

One thing is certain: the movie left me disturbed and a little agitated. Hence, not a good idea to watch this movie before going to bed.

Le bonheur des uns...
(2020)

Surprisingly enjoyable !
I was a little apprehensive before I started to watch this movie. The percentage of viewers who liked this movie is relatively low.

However, I was pleasantly surprised that the characters are very interesting to watch how they evolve from the beginning to the end.

Casting is very good.

To watch a friend becoming famous while themselves tried and failed is a challenge. Each character reacts in a different way.

This is a comedy so the reactions are caricatural, exaggerated ! . Love how her friends eventually find their own ways to grow by finding their own passions.

Love the filming locations around the city, giving it a distinct European atmosphere.

Oppenheimer
(2023)

Great topic but too long, too complex
Topic is very good as it takes the viewers through the development of the atomic bomb.

Casting is very good.

However, I found the back and forth in time quite confusing at times. It's not an easy movie to watch, you really need to concentrate .

Also, found it too heavy and way too long.

The Director obviously did an impressive amount of research and at times felt I was watching almost a documentary.

However, I would have liked to see this movie lasting maximum 2 hours. Way too long.

Can't fault the actors and actresses especially Downey Jr, I wouldn't be surprised that he would win an Oscar for his interpretation.

Run Rabbit Run
(2023)

Either you will love it hate it
This movie has incredible polarising ratings and reviews.

I like it.

Sarah Snook is excellent at playing the character of a woman, mother of a young daughter with sudden incomprehensible behaviour.

However it's not the daughter the real problem it's the mother.

Some unresolved issues from her past come back haunting her through her daughter.

Filming locations around the Murray River are absolutely awesome and perfect for this thriller/ horror movie.

Note that the label horror is not about the usual blood and gore.... It's a different type of ", horror".

If you like Sarah Snook you'd enjoy this movie !

Ricchi di fantasia
(2018)

It's all in the mind !
This funny, lighthearted Italian comedy hit the right spot !

Casting is excellent Filming locations are delightful and awesome !

Sergio has nagging wife, an overbearing mother and not respected by his kids.

However he's always in for a laugh and always hopeful his life will change for the better.

He's got a gorgeous mistress whom he loves very much and gives him life !

It's wonderful to watch how the characters evolve into eventually becoming a happy new family !

By leaving everything behind, Sergio Sabrina their kids and his mother travelling together learn to love each other and be happy as a new reconstituted family !

Light comedy at times quite funny and endearing.

Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris
(2022)

10 is for the acting, not the topic !
First of all, I'm a typical man from an era with classic stereotypes.

I have never been interested in fashion, let alone women's Haute Couture !

Based on that premise, I can't explain why I watched the movie with tears and emotions !

Is it the incredible, so impressive endearing character of Mrs Harris?

Or is it the actress who played extremely well the character ?

I still can't explain !

Yet on the face value it's a very simple storyline of a very ordinary English lady who just wants to buy an expensive dress in Paris.

Yet I found the movie so touching that I had constant tears of joy while watching Mrs Harris journey !!!

In Limbo
(2023)

Endearing Aussie comedy/tear jerker!
Storyline seemed a bit covered by many movies and series about ghosts needed to complete unfinished business before "crossing over" ... However, surprisingly, this Aussie series set in Brisbane is actually endearing and great mixture of comedy and drama and tear jerking !

Casting is excellent !

Enjoyed the chosen filming locations around Brisbane.

I particularly liked how the characters interact straight from the beginning.

It's a series where it's easy to follow the storyline, feel the compassion for the way each character manage the grief.

How each character evolves through the episodes.

Above all, it's not a series that gives lessons on the "afterlife".

Klienten
(2022)

Brilliant but gruesome
I would have liked to give 7.5 It's a very good movie, extremely intense though.

Due to its intensity and twists, I can understand why some viewers rated it much lower.

It's heavy.

However, if you are in the mood for an extremely powerful psychological thriller, then this is a gem !

Important to state that if you are looking for an average thriller, then it's not for you.

This movie is very, very intense.

The ending is brilliant.

Casting is excellent !

Really brilliant actors.

Although some scenes are absolutely gruesome this movie's main focus is on the psychological confrontation between the two protagonists.

Keullining eop
(2022)

Surprisingly great Korean series !
I'm not a fan of remake so my expectations were low.

I really thought I wouldn't get past the first episode.

However, surprisingly, casting is so good that I got addicted !

I actually counted the days until SBS released the following episode !

(It was weekly)

Main characters are cleaning ladies, each ones with their own set of personal troubles.

The world of high rolling big money sharemarkets was very foreign to them ... until One of them inadvertently found that they could make more money in a day than them as cleaning ladies for a whole life.

Of course, there are huge challenges involving the dirty world of insider trading .

Great series, great casting.

Appetite
(2023)

Good storyline; poor casting and directing
Storyline of international students and other migrants seeking permanent residency in Australia come across a mysterious disappearance of one of them.

It seems to me it's a very low budget series; however sometimes these can be hidden gems.

This series is unfortunately not.

Each episode is very, very short; about 9-10 minutes. I don't know why but still found it annoying.

Casting is poor; you can tell they're reading their lines but forget to put the right emotions in the lines.

I would have loved this series to be good as it includes many young actors and actresses.

Get the feeling some of them it was their first role.

Pørni
(2021)

Series about a woman for women.
Reading the 10/10 reviews, one would think this would be a fantastic series.

It's a good series but I think it aims at a women's audience?

I found it a little difficult to relate to the character.

Maybe because I am a man?

I don't know.

The character is a woman working for child protective services but has a few problems of her own as a mother.

She tries her best, given the challenging situation she has at home.

There's a mixture of drama and a little comedy but I'd say it's mostly drama.

If you are a single mother with a challenging job, trying to negotiate both, then there's a chance you'd relate to this series.

The Ides of March
(2011)

Great actors, poor screenplay
This movie has a great line up of actors and actresses.

Maybe that's why it gets an average score of 7.... which would normally mean it's a good movie.

Unfortunately, the screenplay is not the best, lacks imagination.

A governor running for president has a dirty little secret.

One of his senior staff is blackmailing the governor

Nothing new about it .

Without the impressive list of actors and actresses, I would have given a score of 2 or 3 perhaps.

The problem with this movie is that it's so predictable, no twists.

I watched it to the end hoping for a possible twist or something unusual ... unfortunately, the screenplay being poor...

Une mère
(2021)

Touching story about seeking closure
This is a movie where it earns its stars towards the end.... This is where it becomes different to the usual vengeance type of stories.

Maybe some viewers gave up too early ?

A mother wants revenge against the man who savagely killed her son. That's pretty expected.

However, It's not an action movie, it's about the evolution of the characters, both of them needing closure.

Hence, what makes this movie touching is that both the killer and the mother actually needed closure.

Karine Viard is great in playing the character of the mother who just can't move forward in her life so she thinks that revenge would help her.

However she learns that it's not that simple.

Obsession
(2023)

Too slow, too long.
The storyline is good. A father starts a perverted sexual relationship with his son's fiancee.

It should have been a good series.

Only 4 episodes so I thought Netflix wouldn't be stretching the story.

But unfortunately Netflix did !

At best, it should have been say a 90 minute movie.

The pace of the series is way, way too slow, quite boring at times . Even the Si called "steamy " scenes are unconvincing and repetitive.

Casting is not that good either.

Perhaps the only actor doing a good job is the character of the fiancee.

Every other actor looked lost in delivering the script.

Sometimes Netflix comes up with disappointing series; this one is one of them.

Des gens bien
(2022)

Brilliant Belgian hilarious drama/ comedy
Yes, it sounds paradoxical to say a murder/ drama series is also hilarious but it is !

Really absolutely brilliant casting make this series binge worthy !

The man at the centre of all this madness is played so well ! He is a "good man" who always means well, unfortunately people around him are doing things that are crazy !

Crazy wife and cousin inlaw Crazy mistress Everyone around him are making his life spiralling so much that he is totally helpless in stopping them.

Again, whoever was in charge of casting did an amazing job in matching actors with the characters !

It's the first Belgian series that I binged....well worth it.

Funny, crazy, Thriller, everything to make it brilliant !

De rouille et d'os
(2012)

Good story, bad sounds and lightning.
This movie is highly rated however I found it very frustrating to have to constantly adjust the sound level and the brightness levels.

Storyline is good as the male and female characters both have major challenges in their respective lives. The way they eventually find a way to resolve their issues is the key.

However.... The movie has at times loud noises yet we can't hardly understand what they are saying. French is my native language yet I had to read the subtitles because ambient noises often drowned the voices so very difficult to hear what the actors are saying.

Regarding lightning.... often dark then adjust my screen brightness levels only to find next scene is very bright.

Last Holiday
(2006)

Surprisingly delightful comedy !
I didn't expect much from this movie but thought I would give it a go .

From the first scene I love the character"Georgia" . The actress playing the role is just absolutely wonderful in showing this wholesome , such kind hearted woman!

The film location is quite amazing, what a magical place in the mountains if the Czech republic ! ....the hotel ... WOW

Casting director had a brilliant idea to have Gerard Depardieu play the role of Chef .... really perfect casting and his screen presence makes the restaurant scenes and finest food so spectacular !

Love it how at the end credits, they show what happens later in the lives of the main characters, all their lives completely turned around !

Love this movie.

MH370: The Plane That Disappeared
(2023)

Done too many times
On one hand, it's irresistible not to watch the documentary.

This mystery is after all absolutely historic as being the most baffling, frustrating in aviation history.

On the other hand I don't know what Netflix was trying to do with this documentary.

There has been dozens of documentaries with numerous theories.

Why revisiting it unless new material ?

I agree however with the aviation journalist who favoured the murder-suicide by the pilot theory. In fact it is most probably the only feasible scenario.

Planes simply don't turnaround 180 degrees without reason and all communications turned off.

Only the pilot can do that.

However What I really didn't like is the fact the family members of people who have died in the tragedy, they don't give us candid testimonies about their experience.... Everything is scripted.

The Jackal
(1997)

Top cast, poor screenplay
With a top cast like this movie has, surely you would expect a very good movie ?

The answer is the storyline, screenplay is not very good and falls into such heavy stereotypes about Russia, agents, hit men, etc .. and spies and the FBI.

Storyline is too predictable.

However, it's the heavy stereotypes that basically killed the movie.

Filming locations: how come none in Russia ?

They used Finland I realise it's just a movie but it has a lot of errors, and illogical scenes, it put the viewers off.

It must have been frustrating for such an impressive cast to having to work with such a poor screenplay.

Une sirène à Paris
(2020)

Very different
I watched this movie resisting the temptations to check the reviews before .

I was curious what score it would get.

Surprised to see it's rated at 5.7 I guess This is a movie not for everyone's cup of tea.

Personally, I liked it because it's very different to other fantasy movies. It's a potential cult movie .

However, the story is developing a little slow.

On the other hand, casting is very good.

Music, décors are wonderful.

I guess to enjoy this movie, you need to look into your inner romantic side and feel for "Gaspard" who is falling in love with this beautiful mermaid.

Impossible love?

Most of the outdoor scenes are at night which gives a special character to the story.

Le dernier métro
(1980)

Touching movie with such great actors !
What a treat !

Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu when they were young and at their best !

I'm generally not keen on war movies and was a little apprehensive at the start.

However, the movie has only little to do with the war, you don't see any horrors, fighting, etc.. The movie is about a group of actors and a theatre where they present plays in Paris during the occupation.

Actors know that Parisians need to be able to go to theatres to momentarily forget about the war.

Actors are trying to make a name for themselves, to survive.

Casting is sooo impressive as the main protagonists are a young Gerard Depardieu and a young, absolutely beautiful Catherine Deneuve.

One of their best movies arguably.

Director Francois Truffaut is wonderful in directing this delightful movie.

Natale a tutti i costi
(2022)

Unexpectedly pleasant comedy !
It's a charming, unpretentious Italian comedy.

Storyline attracted my attention. Parents feeling left out by their adult children.

Parents want to see them more regularly, spend time together.

Adult children focusing on their lives.

So parents devise a scheme based on a big lie to lure their adult children to come and visit the parents.

Casting is very good .

It's only after watching the movie that I then read it's a remake of a French movie... remakes are usually notoriously never as good as the original.

Without seeing the original french version, I don't know.

However, I did enjoy this movie as a light comedy.
