Kingpin
(1996)

Actually funny!
I ended up enjoying this and also wanting to go out and bowl myself! While some of the humor is subtle and quick, it really does work. Everyone in the film did great with their roles and performed wonderfully (Bill Murray, Randy Quaid, Woody Harrelson, and Vanessa Angel). This film may have nothing on the Big Lebowski (one of my all time favorite comedies that also had bowling in it) but it still largely felt original and clever. The story took unexpected turns and twists, especially at the end. Movies like this aren't made anymore and maybe they shouldn't be, they should be cherished for what/when they are!

Frozen II
(2019)

I didn't like it as much as the first one.
While this movie had emotional scenes and good animation with some creative spins and significant revelations, it was ultimately a sub par movie for me. There was no real villain in it (since Elsa's grandfather had died many years ago and wasn't a big part of the movie except brief abstract illustrations) and the threatening presence of certain forest creatures/phenomena that were meant to be intimidating and pose a challenge then got saved in the background for a later part too many times. They could've done more with the enchanted forest I think and there was also an overload of exposition earlier in the film. Other than that it was fair I suppose, but I'd much rather watch the first one which felt more human-centered and therefore relatable and more emotionally compelling.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
(2015)

My second, revised review after a rewatch.
While it ended up having some problems (rushed at the beginning, not as good as the first one, lack of clear motivations from the villain, too much needless CGI, and less dark than anticipated) the Avengers team never disappoints. James Spader as Ultron was awesome, Elizabeth Olsen was and still remains interesting and beautiful, and the action/stakes were solid throughout the film (especially at the end with the Sokovia turning into a meteor and that big final battle, lots of badass moments)! This movie had important moments of character and relationship development for our main heroes as well, and the introduction of Vision and how his scene of exposition was handled was absolutely brilliant. What a neat new character! Yes, it's not perfect and probably the worst of the 4 Avengers movies even, but still very good and a noteworthy/significant MCU movie!

[Rec]
(2007)

Very good, THIS is scary horror.
There's one major inconsistency which is mainly how long the infection/possession goes into affect, and I found it a little strange that throughout the movie there would be different time windows for different characters who got bit. Other than that, this is the scariest movie that I've seen in quite some time and I admire it. It reminded me a little bit of Alien (1979) and Barbarian (2022) which are two of my many favorite horror movies. I even liked this one better than Cloverfield (2008) and I loved the directing/shots throughout the movie that were reflective of the awesome capabilities of the found footage style. The great things about this movie are it's short, to the point, easy to follow, keeps you engaged, and even has some mystery behind it toward the end that makes you hypothesize various things! I really liked the jump scares as well! They didn't feel cheap one bit!!

The Defenders
(2017)

Not too bad.
My main complaints: Sigourney Weaver plays a very stale and boring villain and many of the side characters and their motivations/backstories lack emotional investment (from me anyways). Matt Murdock/Daredevil was the main hero who I was invested in (being the main reason I watched the show) and was probably the best thing about it. Some of the fight sequences were really good and it was cool seeing Stick one more time too, who's a real badass. Some of the dynamics between the characters I liked and there were some smart choices made. Overall, while it's a bit of a throwaway show that should've felt slightly more special, I also like how they ended it for Matt Murdock and Karen and Foggy which felt gripping and cut deep emotionally.

Killers of the Flower Moon
(2023)

It's mostly pretty good.
While this is one of the less impressive and less favorite Scorsese movies of mine that I've seen and while the plot sometimes gets a little too distracted with its story-telling for its own good (mainly with the crimes and characters), there are several good things. I always love Leonardo DiCaprio's acting plus Scorsese's directing and quality production behind the scenes, and the dramatic moments that aren't easy to forget. Lily Gladstone gave a pretty good performance as well. While the film goes on for quite some time, you become invested enough and I did not know much about this story and what happened with this event and so I was more surprised when it ended the way it did.

12th Fail
(2023)

A powerful and uplifting movie.
This film actually made me cry at the end which I didn't expect it would make me do, when he passed his application and got the position he wanted. The 3rd act was handled real well. I got really invested in the main character Manoj and everyone did very good in the movie with their performances. The film was shot and directed really well too and while this isn't typically my kind of movie, I have to acknowledge that it is a significant one. Life is truly a rollercoaster with ups and downs but if you never give up on your dreams and work incredibly hard, you can do anything you want to. I even enjoyed the romance angle of the movie and the chemistry and connection that Manoj and Shraddha had with each other. The only thing that came across as strange to me was how they spoke Hindi with English frequently being sprinkled in randomly. Is that a normal thing? Why did they do that? It seemed strange to me but that's a minor inconsistency. A real emotional film!

Joe Kidd
(1972)

One of the worse westerns I've seen, when they all have a high place in my mind.
I am normally a big fan of westerns, especially Clint Eastwood westerns. However I must say this film let me down. I liked some things like Clint Eastwood's presence and portrayal of badassery as always, the sniper shootout, and how the film was shot with the gorgeous scenery in the background (what I assumed was the Rocky Mountains). Other than that the plot was not interesting, the movie dragged too much (even though it wasn't that long), and the tension behind the bodyguard/henchman in the gang antagonizing Joe was cut short when he died way too suddenly with the trap door and it felt too abrupt and out of place. I wish they had a better final confrontation. In general, too bland and insignificant!

Peacemaker
(2022)

Makes me laugh my socks off!!
This show is even more hysterical than the newer Suicide Squad movie. Each character serves their role and purpose very well and all of the actors do a great job with their performances. John Cena is legendary as Peacemaker and so is his accomplice (Vigilante), who is a lot like Deadpool but more innocent. He might be one of my new favorite "superheroes" just because of how simple yet elaborate he manages to be simultaneously! The dialogue is rich with raunchy yet intelligent humor and we definitely DEFINITELY need more seasons of this. James Gunn is a comedic genius with his writing and for what this show is trying to be, it does an amazing job!

Alice in Wonderland
(1951)

A little flawed but very artistic!!
The animation and creativity that went into this movie's production for the early 1950s/late 1940s was very impressive and a very ambitious project for Disney back then I'd imagine. Sterling Holloway as the cat was a good part of the movie as well as the queen's presence and delivery. While it was a lot to take in and not exactly my favorite Disney movie, it's pretty hard to really hate it. Toward the beginning one could argue and easily notice that Alice's character is pretty dumb and hard to get behind/sympathize with, however it was all a dream in the end after all! I'm glad I gave this a second try, as I hadn't seen it since I was very little.

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India
(2001)

This made an impression on me.
I watched this movie in my world history class in high school and I was actually pretty stunned! The plot holds your attention and makes you interested and invested in the characters. The main character of Bhuvan is someone you can really get behind and the film sends a good message with fighting against racism and oppression, as well as what how they blended in the influence and even small dismantling of the caste system. I liked the music as well, it was very catchy and memorable and I'm not someone who watches a lot of musicals. It is a bit long, sure, but the stakes are high and the game that they played at the end was a great finally! Check this one out!

Ben-Hur
(1959)

Super impressive for the time!
I'll get the minor negatives out of the way. The movie was a bit too long and could've been shorter, plus the romance felt like a bit of a nuisance to the overall story. Those are pretty much the only flaws! The plot was easy and simple to follow, the action (specifically the chariot race) was very impressive and well-directed, the chilling appearances of Jesus and how he was handled was done very intelligently, and Charlton Heston knocks it out of the park with his acting! I liked the way they ended the film too with his sister and mother being cured. This may have nothing on the Ten Commandments but I admired it for what it was and I was largely captivated by it! We should have a rejuvenation and comeback for these kinds of artistic old-age dramas!

Dune: Part Two
(2024)

Better than the first one! Even more grand and entertaining!
While I'm not as invested in this particular universe as I am in others and while it was slightly pretentious in tone, this movie grabbed my attention with its awesome action/fight sequences, its interesting twist, and the powerful way they ended it! Denis Villeneuve is a very skillful director with a detailed eye for filmmaking and I cannot help but like every movie of his that I see. The villains (especially the new younger one) were intimidating and the internal disagreements and conflict that the Freman had among themselves made the film less simplistic and more like it would likely be in real life among any group looking for/waiting for a prophet. Quality action, visuals, story, and characters/character development makes for a quality film!

Alita: Battle Angel
(2019)

I gave this a rewatch.
I like it just as much as I did when it first came out and when I saw it in theaters in early 2019. I can't believe it's been 5 years! They kind of shoehorned Edward Norton in and I wish there was more of him. Toward the end, they made an effort to set up a sequel that may never happen which was slightly frustrating. Plus there was one part at the end where the CGI cyborg body mixed with Hugo's human head looked so atrociously bad and silly. Other than that though, the rest of the CGI/behind the scenes production, action/fight scenes, and motor ball sequences were very cool! The plot was a bit generic for a sci-fi film but had multiple interesting angles to it. Christoph Waltz is a good actor as well as others who were in the movie (like Jennifer Connelly). I was kept pretty entertained! Aside from some stuff at the end, I liked it!

Deadpool 2
(2018)

Just as good!!
I liked this movie just as much, if not even more, than the first movie! The plot copies the Terminator, yes, but the movie itself knows it. The fourth wall breaks are fantastic as well as the action and the hilarious skydiving/parachute scene with all of those great appearances and immediate gruesome deaths! Josh Brolin had one hell of a 2018 with his career, hats off to him. Ryan Reynolds is great as the character of course and I also liked the appearance and portrayal of Juggernaut which was fun. The humor and violence of these Deadpool movies are one of a kind. I cannot wait for the 3rd movie coming up this summer, 6 years later!!!

Deadpool
(2016)

Really raunchy but that's the point!
It took a lot of guts to make a movie like this and it actually ended up doing very well for what it was trying to be. It took me a while to watch it after it came out, but when I did, I was not let down. Ryan Reynolds plays this character magnificently and the humor that both him and everyone else in the cast brings in every scene is great. The violence adds a lot of fun to it as well as the powers that this character has. While it's not my favorite comic book movie and while I do think that the cleaner "MCU" movies around this time-period were better, I cannot complain about the fun that this movie gave me and millions of others!

Beetlejuice
(1988)

I thought it was good. I might check out the second one this year!
Michael Keaton is a great actor and gave a GREAT and memorable performance, and you don't quite believe that it was him for a minute when he's first on screen but it really was! And he's only in like half of it! The movie has a simple but original premise that works well and the practical effects were very impressive. Tim Burton is a talented director with unique vibes as well and this was a great warm up for Batman a year later! Michael Keaton could've almost played the Joker instead of Batman! Winona Ryder was good in her role as well and this movie made me like her as an actress. I can see why this movie has received praise!

Avatar: The Last Airbender
(2024)

I might not watch anymore.
Avatar The Last Airbender really doesn't have a place or business being a live action adaptation and they really shouldn't have tried this AGAIN! After the Shyamalan disaster, WHY??? The only thing I will give it props for is going in a different direction with its story than the anime show originally did by showing the downfall of the Air temple/Aang's home. I admire the different spin on some things, and how SOME of the bending looks and how they made an effort to make the characters look like their originals. Thankfully the rest of this just reminds us of how special and great the animated show was. What I hate about this: poor acting/performances, BAD CGI when Aang flies through the air and the "camera" shows him up close, how bad/dark/thick Aang's eyebrows look, and how completely unexciting it is. My friends may watch more of this since they're real Avatar nerds, but I'm feeling so meh about it. NOT the kind of show I feel like watching more of...and not really sorry about it.

Lost in Translation
(2003)

Didn't do much for me, but had its good moments.
For whatever reason when I watched this, it didn't feel like a movie (which can be considered both a good and bad thing). It felt very realistic and barely had any background music and as a result, felt a little dry after awhile, however that can be what real life is like if you find yourself in another part of the world dissatisfied with what you have! For whatever reason, when Charlotte and Bob began their little affair, her husband was nowhere to be seen for the rest of the movie!! Where did he permanently disappear to all of the sudden?? It would've been more interesting if he caught them and then more drama could've been created with jealousy or even violence. Would've made the film more captivating! I will say that the film was funny and Sofia Coppola does have talent as a director (showing the two laughing women in the background when Bob was talking with another guy in a funny way). I also liked the chemistry and screen presence of both Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson together. It could've come across as real creepy but it didn't! I'll probably never watch this again since it's a bit dull most of the time, but it actually also reminded me of a similar relationship that I had in my life at a certain point in time where we had to go our separate ways after a finite amount of time due to distance (but she was one of the best things that could've happened to me and one of the best people I've ever had in my life). I get what this film was about!

Daredevil
(2015)

Awesome show... hooked me real good.
I feel like I HAVE to review this show. It's for so many to enjoy, even for those who I aren't that into superheroes! The characters are very likable and interesting (even the villains), the action is directed and choreographed fantastic with lots of cool sequences and violent grit, and the stakes feel real! Each episode ends with great cliffhangers that keep you wanting more each and every time! There are some scenes with a lot of legal jargon and technicalities that ruin it ever so slightly but generally it is easy to follow. Charlie Cox is great at playing a blind man, you're so convinced throughout the show that he really can't see! I also found that it was a neat choice to hold off on giving him his suit until the very end of the first season, with a less cool but still acceptable suit used for many episodes that really worked! This is one of the best shows that I have seen in quite some time and I want to go back in time and slap myself in 2015 to 2018 for not checking it out sooner as it came out!

Baby Driver
(2017)

Thrilling and fun!
I liked this movie quite a bit. Really good action and chases, decent humor, pretty good directing, and good casting (loved Eiza Gonzalez, Lily James, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey). It felt quite similar to The Fast and Furious franchise but also had its own unique taste. I found the main character pretty cool and interesting with how he was more of an anti-hero and not completely bad or completely good. I was entertained throughout the film and some moments I was definitely not expecting. I guess the problem that I had with the main character and the plot was how he decided to put his love interest at risk and in too much danger toward the end by mixing her up in the pursuit/crime, however that's a minor critique. If you're in the mood for fun and lively action that feels different, watch this one!

Darkman
(1990)

This was really good!! People are way too harsh on this movie!
You can really tell this is a Sam Raimi movie. A lot of material in it is copied more than 10 years later in the Spider-Man movies (which isn't a bad thing necessarily, good Easter eggs). I enjoyed the cheesy yet wild action sequences and it was intelligently crafted with its plot and writing. Plus in a few scenes it has noir imagery that stands out and looks like an actual comic book! One could point out obvious problems with some scenes, sure. However, for the time it came out it's impressive work and Liam Neeson did a great job! Frances McDormand actually looked really good as a younger actress and love interest too! Bottom line, Sam Raimi never makes a bad movie in my opinion!

Saltburn
(2023)

The twist at the end saved it, and its artistic quality.
Many people said that this movie was disturbing, but in my opinion it wasn't that bad in that way. I think the main problems with the film are that it's hard to actually care that much about the characters and it comes across as slow and boring much of the time. When I had watched 53 minutes of it, it felt like it was twice as long as that. Plus, Barry Keoghan is very ugly and unappealing to me and doesn't have any unique talent as an actor that makes him stand out. He's a little overrated. However, the movie had good directing and artistic imagery that added a lot of fine quality to it. Plus the twists at the end I was not expecting and I'm glad that they made the movie better by the end.

Nixon
(1995)

A lesson in history that lacks a good main character.
While Anthony Hopkins portrays the character very well, Richard Nixon is a hard main character to sympathize with and be invested in in a positive way from an audience perspective. The movie goes on for some time too and was hard to watch in one sitting, especially since it was about a president like that. However, the acting was noteworthy as well as the directing and cutting in and out of historic American moments and footage (when and where he was brilliantly edited in with impressive effects). There were several great scenes, like when Nixon visited the Lincoln Memorial to speak with the students and how he struggled earlier in the film to make it to the presidency and market himself positively to the public. However, when it cut back to his past and family I became less interested. I admire and like Oliver Stone's work, always. However he has made better films about better people.

Disaster Movie
(2008)

It's quite astonishing...
It's quite astonishing how much a movie can be a complete dumpster fire when it's actively trying to be one, but I think it went even beyond what was envisioned and attempted from the very beginning. Perhaps a couple of the laughs are good, but I mean man, this just made me think "why don't I become a filmmaker?? I think I can do it better than this, even without a high budget camera!"This film's plot is as delicate and absent as a fart in the wind, seriously talking about that would be more worthwhile and less of a waste of time than this awful creation. THIS is the kind of movie that would prevent me from watching comedies if there is one out there!
