I was invested in the movie from the beginning to the end and for that alone, I would easily have rated it 10/10. However, the visuals got very dark for long periods especially during the crucial parts of the movie and that frustrated me so much that I was ready to put a 1/10 review at one point. Yet, I couldn't stop watching this movie, so I am leaving this with an 8. All the action-based takes on the Santa, the E. L. F, the North Pole, and everything, really, it was wonderful. The balance of action and magic hit the sweet Christmas part. Yet I will never get over how bad the visuals were at certain points. Anyway, that's how I got to know that Chris Evans was quite literally the "whitest" person cast in the movie because at times I could only really follow his face.
It had potential to be a grand movie but a few things ruined it, the foremost of which is Jenna Ortega's extremely unsuitable acting. The role could have been much better cast, there are many, many talented actors who could have carried the movie to its success. All other actors were alright, but could have been more nuanced like Martin Freeman. It felt like he is the only person invested in acting the movie and the difference between him and all others just spoilt the whole movie experience in the end. The movie was very weak in terms of direction but quite well written. It just saddened me to see it all go to waste in the end, so much wasted potential.
