The Line
(2009)

True Grit
This seems to be a repeating theme in all the previous comments. This show is all grit and grim with absolutely no flashy gimmicks. It has a really dedicated ensemble cast. Given a chance to thrive (with everyone growing into their respective roles) The Line will be the 'dark horse' show to watch out for.

What draws you in are the characters - rogue burnt out cops, a self-loathing legal aid, a fearless no-nonsense janitor and an anxiety attack ridden, drug dealer caught up in the middle of two rival gangs. The show in essence is a police drama yet there are no heroes here - just emotionally, psychologically and physically scarred human beings 'just trying to make a living' as Hector the drug dealer states in the second episode.

No flash, no pizazz - no putting on of shades trying to look cool between takes - just pure drama. From violent heartache to disturbing humour, this show makes no apologies for what it is.

Good solid entertainment!

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
(2003)

Different flavour of Terminator
Reportedly, Linda Hamilton stated that this story 'had no soul' that the other two possessed. After seeing this movie, I get the feeling that it was intentionally darker than the previous two but also more machine-like in execution as well.

This film felt cold and heartless. The acting was straigthforward and the dialogue pretty much flowed but it felt like it was indeed missing Cameron's touch. What upset me most was that Arnold's acting was too human and less android-like. Why? It seemed they sent a terminator with more prior interaction than ever before. Why is he so aware and expressive in times of stress? Doesn't make sense to me.

All in all, the movie had dazzling effects and kept my attention throughout as an action movie should. The ending was a little unsettling but sensible enough. Honestly, if the next installment isn't the last then I'll be joined by many as seeing this great series exploited by the petty, greedy few trying to make a quick buck by ruining a decent premise! If you're interested, go to you local comic shop and see if you can secure a copy of 'Terminator : Burning Earth' series (from the defunct Now comics label) painted fully by the masterful Alex Ross. A definite must see, it should give you a possible clue as to what might happen next.

Revenge of the Nerds
(1984)

One of the 80's best comedies!!!
I recall watching this film in a drive-in as part of the double-bill. We had just finished watching the phenomenal Ghostbusters and having this follow it was a pleasant surprise indeed.

It's pretty much a 'Rocky'-type plot. The underdogs fighting back to win it BUT it's how these types go about it that makes this movie so charming!

Being an 80's film, political correctness was not considered...at all!

Thank-god!

I hunted this movie down after trying several video stores to no avail and finally after popping it in and showing it to family and friends (some of whom were too young to have seen it or not born at all during this film's release!) enjoyed it thoroughly! It's nearly timeless!!! Watching Bernie Casey listening to 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot' had us all on the floor!!! We're black and we weren't offended in the least! Why should we? It's a harmless comedy with good ol' dirty humour for all.

Porky's and Animal House are the only ones of this era that could be considered part of the holy Teen-age comedy trilogy! All the rest, and there were a few, just don't measure up.

My folks and I enjoyed this film almost 20 years ago in that old drive-in (which has long-been shut-down now), while leaving my dad cited that it was a rare event to watch two great comedies back-to-back like that...two great nostalgic classics...very rare indeed!

Write On!

I acquired most of my grammar skills from this show...
I was just a small child barely in kindergarten at the time but I used to fondly look forward to seeing Henry do his thing. The show was very amusing as well as educational. Too bad shows like this aren't made anymore, I really think kids would love it.

Clash of the Titans
(1981)

Fond memories of adventure.
Some people put it down for its cheesy acting. I can't defend that. Heck, I'd be the first to admit it, but the stop-motion effects were sensational! I know it doesn't compare to the effects found in other effects laden films at the time, yet it came from a pioneer in the industry. Look up Ray Harryhausen here in the list to see what other great movies he made. On another point, Star Wars had stop-motion animation as well as Empire Strikes Back and all these wizards would be first to say that Harryhausen was their idol! I remember watching this as a child and seeing the hero delivering the death blow to one of his foes who fell to his knees and howled in agony and I marvelled at it all knowing full well the tedious process involved in delivering a convincing performance by a clay figure (I saw the making of...). It's a movie filled with grand adventure. Mind you, it's not Oscar winning material but it is fun. So, if you just want to curl up with some popcorn and watch a classic Greek style movie without having to resort to a dictionary to understand every other word then this is the movie for you. In short, if you love Jason and the Argonauts; you'll love this!

Read All About It!
(1979)

TV Ontario does it again.
Man oh man, I can't believe I'm actually gonna comment of this! Welp, here it goes. I remember one summer day during 1979 that the first pilot aired for Read All about It! The original cast was much older with the exception of the boy and possibly the girl too who carried over into the eventual series itself. I recall a young teen being trapped in time, always on the run and not exactly sure of his whereabouts. This was where his friends would haplessly look through the monitor of him running for his life, trying to deduce where geographically and which era historically he was trapped in.

It was captivating! It had all the makings of a cool detective show and sure enough, the final product hit the airwaves a short time after. There must be a list of all the TV Ontario programming and cast lists to their incredible array of educational shows. All us Generation X'ers would be interested to read a possible 'Where are they now?' section just for fun. Too bad kids nowadays don't have half the quality shows we had back in the late 70's/early 80's. They're missing out on some of the most insightful educational shows in quite a while.
