Saturday Night Live: Roseanne Barr/Deee-lite
(1991)
Episode 13, Season 16

Very funny episode
I remember seeing this live and I believe this episode won an Emmy. The Misery skit was a perfect fit for Roseanne. You can tell she had a blast hosting. Not on DVD so I held onto my VHS for years but I seem to have lost it. The best skits are cut from the Peacock streaming version.

The Banana Splits Movie
(2019)

Liked It More Than I Thought I Would
I actually found it humorous, dark and weird, which is what I like in a movie. It should have/could have been funnier....the kill scenes needed to be more, i dunno, ridiculous....the one regarding the slime course was good...the rest of the kill scenes should have had this level of siliness. And of course you know ahead of time who will meet their timely demise because those characters are presented as real jerks up front, as per required horror film cliches. I would have preferred a Willie Wonka treatment, where some of the kids are obnoxious and get their comeuppances, but you won't see kids killed in movies these days. In any event, I guess my expectations were low to begin with, so perhaps that's why I would recommend this as far as silly offbeat movies go.

Maude: Maude Meets the Duke
(1974)
Episode 1, Season 3

John Wayne plays himself
This was apparently a promotional appearance for his latest movie, Brannigan. The Findley's conservative neighbor and friend, Arthur, is getting a visit from John Wayne (the explanation is a little vague on why), but a ceiling in Arthur's house colllapses and the Findley's end up hosting The Duke's visit. Hilarity ensues. Naturally, Maude wants to challange Wayne's conservative views, but she collapses like a cheap tent in a very disappointing conclusion in which John Wayne expresses shockingly misogynistic viewpoints.

Prison Girls
(1972)

i'll watch just about anything in 3D
I actually like cheesy drive-in sleaze, and I love 3D, so this fits the bill nicely. Yes, it was originally filmed in 3D and I have a really bad 3D copy, but still it's not bad considering that the genre is not represented in 3D elsewhere. In 2D, there are probably better choices but if you can catch it in 3D it's not bad. Think of it as a poor man's The Stewardesses.

Clown
(1968)

Not bad until the very end....
Well, I was a fan of The Red Balloon, and recently acquired it on 16mm, along with another title called The Merry-Go-Round Horse, both of which are very similar to this style of film-making (simple story, no dialogue, which may have been more of a marketing ploy for export than artistic license). In fact, I thought I remember seeing Balducci's name attached to Merry-Go-Round Horse, but I don't see mention of it here...maybe I'm wrong or not looking in the right place.

Anyway, THIS title isn't bad, but the ending--oh my.

The spoiler: well, at the end, you find that the boy's dog ends up with a blind man. You're not really sure if that's where the dog originated from, but at the end of the film, you see the dog leading the blind man RIGHT INTO THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC! To top THAT, you see that the dog is pulling the man along, as if trying to get away from him! What a shame they couldn't have cast the part of the dog with a better dog actor! The ending had me in stitches!

The Rerun Show
(2002)

heh...I want the DVD
I guess I should file this under guilty pleasure but I grew up when much of the original material was popular. I found this a hoot in the way I do the Brady Bunch Movie(s) and the Chris Elliot show Get A Life. No, nothing great, but this had it's moments and they were pretty good moments from what I remember. It was a summer replacement show on NBC and later showed up on VH-1. Most vividly I recall the spoofs of Facts of Life, The Jeffersons and Diff'rnt Strokes. I was hoping to find them (probably only six episodes in all if that) on DVD somewhere, but so far no luck. I don't remember much while flipping channels but this one sticks out like a sore thumb (and I like sore thumbs).

Friday the 13th Part III
(1982)

Don't bother unless.....
...you have a bootleg copy of the 3D "alternating shutter/field sequential glasses" version (usually available at various auction sites)....This is just an awful, predictable piece of trash. There is no understandable reason why these idiots are getting killed in this movie. I saw this in 3D at the movies back in the early 80s, and the 3D gimmick was the only reason we were there (same for Jaws 3D and Spacehunter 3D). However, if you can find a 3D DVD for the shutter glasses (3D shutter glass system available at http://store.yahoo.com/razor3d/3dvidviewsys1.html), the 3D stuff is pretty fun, and the movie is bad enough to laugh at in that respect. I wouldn't turn my head sideways to see the 2D version! 3D version gets a 5. 2D version gets a 1!
