The Duchess
(2008)

Knightley and Fiennes give the performances of their careers.
Before viewing 'The Duchess' I was expecting another period drama with all the usual scenarios and clichés.

I was greatly mistaken.

'The Duchess' gives us a very personal insight into the marriage of The 18th Century Duke and Duchess of Devonshire.

Keira Knightley is astounding as Georgianna the Duchess of Devonshire. She gives a raw, emotional performance showing her struggle against the constraints of her marriage and what is expected of her in society, which moved me deeply.

Ralph Fiennes plays the Duke perfectly as a cold and quite frankly despicable man. Yet despite the many nasty things he does to Georgianna he still manages to portray a slight vulnerability - that he too is not free.

Hayley Atwell, Charlotte Rampling and Dominic Cooper are all on top of their game and add even more depth to the story.

The costumes and sets are fantastic and the score is beautiful; it really tugs at your heart.

A wonderfully touching drama, which everybody should watch. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Taken
(2008)

Predictable yet thoroughly entertaining
Action packed thriller in which Liam Neeson plays an ex spy out for revenge on whoever has kidnapped his daughter.

I was quite impressed as I expected 'Taken' to be cheesy and repetitive but the acting and the fight scenes were all handled very stylishly.

The story was fast paced and although it was a bit predictable at times it was actually quite tense.

The characters were built up well so that you felt for them and cared about their fate.

Neeson gave an awesome performance both emotionally and physically - quite frankly he kicked butt!!

All round some great entertainment!

Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging
(2008)

An enjoyable comedy
As a fan of the books I was expecting a lot from 'Angus Thongs and Perfect Snogging' and although a lot of things from the books were included, a lot was changed or left out altogether, which at first I found slightly disappointing.

Having separated the film from the books and viewing the film just as it is, I thought this was a solid romantic comedy about a fourteen year old girl (Georgia Nicholson) going through all the ups and downs of being a teenager - boys, kissing, friends, fall-outs, family problems etc.

The lead character was portrayed well by Georgia Groome, who showed Georgia's many different sides from a self-obsessed drama queen to a caring and insightful young woman. Although the four young leads over acted at times, this helped to accentuate the drama of being a teenager.

'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging' is aimed in particular at 12-16 year olds (although it's themes will appeal to females of all ages). That's not to say that males will not enjoy it, anyone who is or has been a fourteen year old can relate to the main character and her issues.

There are some very cheesy moments, and if you don't like clichéd and 'disney' type films then this isn't for you. However I think that for it's genre, 'Angus, Thongs...' has just the right mix of romance, laughter and also some very touching scenes between Georgia and her parents. Overall 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging' is a hilarious, light hearted film, which I thoroughly enjoyed!
