Lincoln
(2012)

Lincoln- Not for all
Lincoln, although a beautiful movie, lacks one thing most movies need now days, action. The film features a lot of talking in rooms. I was really looking forward to learning more about this 'immortal' president but all the focus was on the Emancipation Proclamation. Which, I already had a pretty solid knowledge of. President wanted to abolish slavery, people wanted to keep it. Back and forth and finally, it was abolished. He was shot. That is basically the entire 2.5 hour movie summed up in two sentences.

I did enjoy seeing all the cameos including one from the new boss of The Office, Robert California, but to me, it was pretty boring. I never play with my phone in the movie and I noticed I did it several times (Don't worry, there was only two other people in the whole theater).

I really recommend seeing another movie, unless you either love history (civil war era) or have to see every Spielberg movie.

I'd love to hear what others think, feel free to email me ryanhartford86@yahoo.com. Although I didn't like it, tell me why you did.

Life of Pi
(2012)

Life of Pi- A great treat!
This movie is very different than I expected. Knowing about all that was shown on trailers (a bunch of animals swimming and a kid on a boat with a tiger) I went into this movie with no solid expectations. I thought it would be more whimsical and magical, but for the most part the story stays on par with realism.

The CG was fantastic, it was often hard to distinguish between the CG tiger and a real one. It was a pretty grand movie but what seemed on a smaller scale. No real big name US actors.

I wanted to see it in 2D, but went to the 3D one instead. If you see this, I definitely recommend 3D. It was amazing having a tiger jump out at you or have the boys spear pointing at you when he is training the tiger.

This movie was a treat and I recommend seeing it. I really enjoyed the ride.

Let me know what you think, ryanhartford86@yahoo.com, If you hated it, loved it, either way I'd love to hear from you!

Skyfall
(2012)

Finally the pieces are fitting together
As a fair warning, I discuss crucial plot points, and reading can ruin some of the movies amazing qualities. I suggest if you plan to see this film, stop reading reviews and see it. It's a great movie and it's worth seeing. Then come back and read my review and lets discuss it.

As a huge fan of James Bond, owning every VHS tape, I could barely keep from humming the iconic James Bond theme song all day waiting for my movie show time to come; and I was not disappointed!

Although, my personal feelings toward the film, it wasn't an amazing movie. V for Vendetta was amazing. Forrest Gump was amazing. But the things in this film, made the last several with Craig seem that much more special all leading to this one.

This film seemed so much more like a James Bond movie than the rest of Craig's, and I believe it to be completely intentional. He had finally said Bond, James Bond. The catchy bond music is finally apparent throughout the film. And he finally is not hesitant to ask for his Martini shaken not stirred while at a Casino. The past few movies had one objective, to give the character depth and back story, not to prematurely give us an international super spy, but to hint at it until both us and Bond was ready.

It's what happens at the end where it all makes sense. (again, if you haven't seen this, STOP READING already, and see it). After M's death, the series goes full circle and lands probably some time before Dr. No; which is, to me, a strange paradox. Judi Dench is M in the chronologically future bond movies with Brosnan. Then starting over with Craig in Casino Royale. She then dies before Dr. No which is when they hire the new male M, the replacement to the one you might remember from the earlier Bonds. I know it's a movie, but it's kind of funny to think about.

The moment he steps into the new office with Moneypenny, it's finally very clear on their intentions with this series of Bond. I believe the direction they are taking is a series of Bond movies that are more tied together as a narrative unlike the older bonds which is more episodic.

I love this new Bond series. It's been a great ride, and from what I've heard, we may have many more to look forward to. Like it? Hate it? email me, I'd love to discuss. ryanhartford86@yahoo.com

Brave
(2012)

Beautiful looking film that doesn't match the quality of story
This film is very beautifully done, the artists, great job. The storyline was terrible. It was another balled up Disney movie that seemed like it was just trying to fit in every single cliché and Disney trademark as it could. It starts as it should, epic.

Then out of nowhere the epic Celtic music begins and the female vocals come in. I immediately wanted to leave. The girl I was with, also seemed exhausted with this as well. It didn't need that, it made the film go from really cool to chick flick.

Little did I know, it was going to get worst. The trailer explained the movie as a hero rising, and the changing of fate. Who doesn't like that. So she rides off mad at her mom, finds a witch and requests her fate to be changed. She is granted her wish and her mom is turned into a bear. Yes, a bear. So the entire movie, basically is the main girl trying to mend her moms relationship and turn her back into a human. Well, that's not hard, because the love is already there. She basically apologizes and is sad about everything. and obviously, in the nick of time, the sun, which could consequently keep her a bear, shines light on the two and magically she turns back into a human (which isn't as cool as I'm making it seem). The plot was a total deviation from the trailer, it made no sense, and it was more for little kids than the usual Pixar film, which for the most part is usually made for a wide audience.

After the film, I couldn't leave fast enough. I hope people enjoy the film, I just didn't. Nor would I recommend seeing it.

I was throughly disappointed, but I'm curious on what others think. So feel free to email me at ryanhartford86@yahoo.com
