Col cuore in gola
(1967)

Slow Down. A beast of a giallo
What a beast of a giallo. Good? That depends. I "Liked" it. Yes. I liked the music. The actors. I wasn't even sure what Bernard did for a living until he said he was an actor and that wasn't confirmed until later from a comment by his friend David. He got involved in a murder mystery because He fell hard after seeing this girl, Jane (Ewa Aulin) in a club he frequented. She was with her step-mom, brother Jerome and and man. After an exposition dump by a club patron, Jane vanished. Bernard goes to see the club's owner because his credit is cut off. He finds the club owner dead. Jane is hiding in the shadows of the office. She says she is innocent. Then there is some nonsense about her recently run down Dad being blackmailed by the dead club owner.... and we're off. Kidnapping, car chases, running chases, chases in subway stations, a little man, a big man. guns. photography studios. a little sex. a little nudity. very brief Batman '66 sound effects when someone is punched. (no kidding). the director lingers on a Lobby Card for Blow Up. Yeah. One thing I liked was done twice. Bernard and Jane RACE! down metal staircases and it sounds like a drum solo. Neat. Then Bernard tries to play a drum solo. Silly. There's a "Me Tarzan" gag when she says her name is Jane. There there is a callback to the same gag later in the film. Yes, there are brief "comedy bits" in this giallo along with beatings and murders. It's so weird. But I was engrossed by it. I actually like this film. It's swinging London when London was swinging. There's a long scene near the end of Bernard and Jane looking for "step mom" at a "happening" or I guess a very large club. The place was huge. The whole film happens over 36 hours or so? That seems wrong, but you kinda get that impression. Nobody takes time to eat. It's one set piece to the next. That's a minor flaw. It's so fast. Almost too fast and when it is over you still think there is MORE TO ALL THIS. A very generous 6.5 out of 10. 8 out of 10 for the song "Love Girl" It sounds great on DVD, but bad on YouTube. Bummer. Oh, and Ewa Aulin reminds me constantly of Goldie Hawn during her Laugh-In days. That's Another thing. This character was 17 and very sexually active. You feel creepy finding this out and seeing her have sex with Bernard (often) and finding out that she has other lovers.. Dang. I know it's "Swinging London", but geez girl. Slow Down.

Night Gallery: A Fear of Spiders/Junior/Marmalade Wine/The Academy
(1971)
Episode 4, Season 2

i got scared!
Two things scared me in 1971: The Return of Count Yorga (in theater) and the Night Gallery segment "A Fear of Spiders". I was 11. I did not scare easily. A few episodes of Dark Shadows gave me chills when i was younger. The next thing that scared me on TV was a very large spider on a bed. A man opened a bedroom door and a giant spider pulsed on a large while bed. I recall jumping back, as i was sitting on the floor. In this Night Gallery episode it was very brief and very memorable scene. I saw it in the days when you couldn't rewind or pause.. You saw it once and maybe months later in a re-run. That was it. That giant spider haunted me for years; the entire episode did. Oddly enough, I do not fear spiders at all. Personal Trivia: the next thing to scare me was the CBS TV movie "Gargoyles". That was dang freaky as well.

Autostop rosso sangue
(1977)

more reasons for me to not travel
8 out of 10. I never heard of this until I saw it on RARO's (new) website. It's damn good. A Very Intense Film! What didn't I like? Some of the overly repeated bits in Morricone's score. Okay, there is violence, nudity, sex, rape, murder, insanity, car crashes, motorcycles, CHiPs, theft, misogyny, greed, selfishness and a great deal of barren road. Italy subs for Southern Cali in this movie. Poor Eve. Poor Adam. "God will get you for that Walter! " is from a sitcom, but karma may catch up to Nero's poor drunken Walter. Product Placement! KFC, Texaco, Carlton cigarettes and other brands, Coke, Pepsi and more. They are brief, but look for the Colonel Sanders cameo! (twice!). Recommend for fans of road trip films, Franco Nero fans, and camping enthusiasts. I had to ask myself this: In the scene by the waterfall Nero has put a table and 4 chairs in the grass as he and Adam chat. Eve is cooking. So there are only three people. Why four chairs? it bugged me.

Trent's Last Case
(1952)

A boring film...Be glad it is "Trent's LAST Case"...
One other reviewer stated this so well: "If it weren't for the presence of Orson Welles as the ostensible murder victim in Trent's Last Case, this rather indifferent British murder mystery would be consigned to blessed obscurity. For that the rest of the cast should be grateful."

I agree. Not only was I bored to death it took me 3 weeks to get through this thing a few minutes at a time. The film look nice. All the male leads are charming. The female lead is gorgeous, but has little to do except mourn, play the piano, and look sad some more. When Welles does appear (in flashback); he quite over the top and you WANT him to die. Our detective doesn't do very much and somehow gets the girl in the end. Bah!

The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies!!?
(1964)

not as bad as I expected.
I gave it a 4.

5 notable things:

1. I loved Angela's Helmet Hair. Gorgeous Big Hair. I could watch that early scene of her talking with mom (before Jerry arrives) over and over. OK--I've revealed my big hair fetish.

2. Cash Flagg/Steckler as Jerry reminds me of Nick Cage.

3. Cash Flagg is Cornhoolio! When killing people he pulls up his hood. Now I'm 48 and I watched some Beavis & Butthead in my day so when I saw the scenes with his hood up all I could think of was "Beavis/Flagg is Cornhoolio!" (Remember when Beavis was Cornhoolio in the B&B movie?)

4. The Cops shoot first. These guys weren't from Adam-12!

5. Overall the film looked pretty good.

One Foot in Heaven
(1941)

Charming!
I watched this today, Easter Sunday 2008, on TCM. Totally charming and warm-hearted this is the kind of film you rarely see anymore.

It's a positive movie overall. It deals with a preachers conflict among church members and his own family that one sees in most small town churches.

The performances were quite good and all the lead actors deserve praise. The child actors were cute without being annoying.

My favorite character was the gardener Samson. His simple persona made me think that he could almost be a blueprint for Peter Sellers character in "Being There".

I was a preacher's kid too so I understood this film from that perspective.

The end scene is gorgeous and touching.

Spitfire
(1934)

An Odd Little film
I enjoyed this to a point. It's certainly an ODD Little film

I was trying to understand where it was going. I stayed with it to see what the ending was going to be -- I expected Trigger would somehow die in the end.

Hepburn was funny as Trigger. I don't think that was intentional, but I laughed at her odd syntax and slang. She was gorgeous too; a bit too good looking for someone missing a few meals every day.

Ralph Bellemy's "Mr. Fleetwood" was the nice guy and while he was the 'Boss' over the damn project he was liked by all his workers. Isn't that an odd thing?

Robert Young's "John Stafford" was a jerk. I was a bit annoyed at his flirtation with this Hepburn's Trigger since he was supposed to be married and he hid that fact from her. I guess that is how his character was supposed to come off for Trigger to learn how deceitful even 'city folk' could act.

The religious overtones are interesting but grind to a halt late in the film. I don't understand why Trigger burned her 'Sunday School' cards.

The movie intrigues the viewer but leaves too many questions.

Ocean's Eleven
(2001)

I love it except for...
Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts is NOT a pretty woman.

She shouldn't wear her hair UP...ever; and her joker-mouth is just distracting.

She's an okay actress but why anyone thinks she's so hot is beyond me.

now Sanra Bullock in Demolition Man...that's a pretty woman

but I digress.

I didn't expect to enjoy this movie but I liked it a lot...

Bravo to Clooney and the others. I liked the celeb poker game at the beginning... now we're seeing Celeb Poker on ESPN...hmmmmmmmmmm

Full Metal Jacket
(1987)

One of my Personal Top 10
I only gave this a 9 because the movies 2nd half isn't as perfect as the first half.

The boot camp sequence is so damn perfect I just enjoy watching it over and over.

The "Nam" sequence is a downer only at the end. The sniper is a tragic figure to me.

Buy This Movie and Watch it often.

Double Whammy
(2001)

there's a real mystery here
The reason for renting this movie was a very good review in the UK music/movie megazine UNCUT (i said MEGAzine...Brit mags are totally superior to magazines here).

Then I saw a FULL PAGE ad for the UK theatrical release of Double Whammy for August of 2003. The ad called Double Whammy a 4 Star Film. The British critics loved this movie. I am not going to rehash their review here...this is my review. I could not determine why a movie ignored here in the US is suddenly big news across the pond.

I must be missing something. This reminded me of Leary's vastly superior but short-lived show "The JOB" which was an ensemble show of good comedy actors doing a non-laughtrack NY Cop Show. I would buy a DVD set of "THE JOB" right away. At times this movie plays like a busted-pilot version of "The Job" (ABC).

Double Whammy I'd buy on ebay for $10 or less. First off this LionsGate DVD is total bare-bones. Not even a trailer! Just sub-titles and the movie.

The movie is mildly entertaining. I gave it a 6 here on imdb.

Dennis Leary plays a world weary cop. He's fine but not agressive like he was in The Job. Here's he just accepts his fate and gets kicked around a lot. This is Dennis Leary-Lite.

Leary's character is a down on his luck cop with a lot of back pain. Circumstances make him a laughing stock of New York and he has to deal with that and his back troubles. He lives in a apartment building with Luis Guzman as The Super. Guzman's daughter argues with him all the time over getting a tattoo(!).

Add to that 2 other building tenants who get a LOT of screentime and 2 wacky thugs who make this movie violent.

Victor Argo as Leary's boss is funny; I wish he had been in more of the movie. Instead he's given the role of "superior who chews out cop in office". Something we see in countless cops and buddy-cop movies.

Chris Noth (Mr. Big in Sex and the City) as a stuck up cop (horribly overdressed) is okay. Noth's character is named 'Chick Dimitri'; how's that for odd? Steve Buscemi is almost wasted as Leary's partner yet he's 3rd billed with not enough screen time. Luis Guzman is strictly cannon fodder here and spends half his screen time near death.

Liz Hurley is good but looked sexier in Bedazzled. Here she looks like she's slumming for some cab fare.

The rest of the cast is nothing special. I hate spoiling a movie but this is a 2 star film. It might be 4 Star to some UK critics but not to me.

Rent at your own risk

Experiment in Terror
(1962)

Superb Crime Thriller.
Great Crime Thriller with a top notch cast. Henry Mancini's creepy score was chilling in the opening sequence. Where i grew up this opening theme was used for WGN's Creature Feature Series in the early 70s.

My uncle told me about this movie but I never saw it until this year. I love DVD.

oh...the movie itself. It's creepy, well acted and worth watching with a close friend. Glen Ford is solid and Lee Remick is so pretty.

I refuse to reveal any serious details of this film! Rent or Buy it today.

Enjoy the movie. Don't miss this one; it's usually less than $15 at Borders!

Freddy vs. Jason
(2003)

2 Severed Thumbs Up!
Like all fans who saw Jason Goes to Hell we've been waiting years for this movie to come to light. I watched it less than 3 hours ago in a rural theater and an audience of about 20...mostly couples. No complaints from this small group and the girl who took my ticket claimed to have seen it five times.

I liked it. I laughed (a most evil laugh) at some scenes and enjoyed the Freddy Vs Jason battles. The teen actors were quite good. John Ritter's son was just fine as the "boyfriend who left without a word". Kelly Rowland had a good moment or two teasing Freddy and insulting the poor nerd boy. Monica Kenna was good as Lori. At first I didn't think she was going to even survive but she got tough when she had too.

Where did this Freeburg character come from? Was he visiting from the set of a new Jay & Silent Bob film? As comic relief he wasn't bad though and got to look tough for a scene.

Deputy Stubbs character didn't get enough to do. He was on the right path and Jason gave him a shocking good time.

My fave scene was Jason at the rave party. Well even before Jason arrived it was cool. And to prove these kids are very rural they don't take 'X' at a rural rave; they drink everclear!

I would have preferred Kane Hodder as Jason. I saw the interviews with him on the Jason X DVD and he seemed to be really wanting this film. Why didn't he get it?

As for the Freddy vs. Jason scenes? All very good I think. I don't want to give away too much but I really thought they pulled it off.

Yes, the movie has some humor. Yes, it has some nudity. And It really has some gore and slashing going on. Do I want a sequel? If they can do it right we can do this 2 more times...(let's not go beyond 3).

Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday
(1993)

I Liked It a Lot
I liked Steven Williams as Creighton Duke. He's a good action player.

I really like the opening where the SWAT team blows up Jason.

The body possesion bit didn't bug me at all. The creature that possesed Erin Grey's dead body and "became" Jason at the end reminded me a bit too much of "The Hidden".

This movie had a story and it was a hell of a lot better than Parts 7 or 8. (God, did part 8 Suck!) And I am also glad this movie appears to ignore Part 8.

I gave this movie a 7; it's one of the best in the series.

Now I'm ready for Freddy Vs. Jason! Alan

Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
(1989)

what no comments about JJ?
I've read about 60 reviews so far and my fave character gets killed way too early. She is J.J. Jarrett played by Saffron Henderson. Her character appears to be a merging of Joan Jett (hence "J.J.") and Lita Ford (hence the more heavy metal style of playing than Joan and the type of guitar--a flying v---). Both Joan and Lisa (former band mates in The Runaways(1976-1979) were at the peak of their popularity when this movie came out. Since guitars are also known by the name 'Ax' Jason uses her new instrument as one. Annoyingly though he appears to 'teleport' from above his victim to down and in front of her while picking up her 'Ax' along the way.

Reni is nice looking too, but I like JJ best.

As for the rest of the movie. It does suck. I hate the location changes and no one has commented that Crystal Lake is a LAKE! How do you take a small boat into a lake? I thought this was a landlocked body of water in upstate(?) New York. But as others have noted Crystal Lake seems to be like The Simpsons 'Springfield' and be located near whatever the plot needs.

I, too, am confused why Jason gets on the boat and leaves Crystal Lake? Does he think more victims will be acquired this way?

The special effects on Jason are terrible. Continuity flaws abound. Jason's 'teleportation' power is a joke. The "Manhattan" scenes are awful. The ending is pathetic.

A 2 star movie. I only made it 3 stars for Saffron Henderson's too-brief role as a girl with a guitar.

I've seen Jason goes to hell. I like the opening sequence only, but I plan to watch it again via NetFlix along with Jason X. I am preparing for the big "Freddy vs. Jason" movie opening soon.

Cheers You Lot! By the way I HATE CAMPING. lol.

M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder
(1931)

creepy film, but excellent
Great movie! I've been wanting to see this for many years. A true classic by director Fritz Lang. Claustrophobic and Creepy. Peter Lorre's first role was well done. I liked the actor who played the crime boss also. After renting the Criterion edition I purchased the NEWER Criterion edition and enjoyed it again.

Oh, the story? It's about a child murderer and the search to bring him to justice. It's a crime thriller and police procedural. It has drama and suspense. Darn it. I sound like a moron. I don't want to give anything away. Rent It. Buy It. But see this classic.

I MUST recommend this film. PS: I don't think I've ever seen so much cigar smoking in a movie ever before or ever will again. That was something I really noticed.

Vegas in Space
(1991)

Campy silly fun
I first saw this on USA Nite Flight years ago. I never expected to find it on DVD (a Troma Release) at Best Buy!!!!

Yes, all the actors are men in drag (right?) and it's silly silly fun. Hey, how many movies have u seen made in someone's apartment? How many movies have you seen using make-up and nail polish bottles to resemble a minature cityscape? (please recall that Star Trek (original tv show) used European Salt and Pepper shakers as medical gear!)

This movie is silly bad and was made over 7 or 8 years. It's FUN.

So put in your fave wig and enjoy.

Comes with 3 silly Troma Trailers and some other funny extras.

Bats
(1999)

It's Creepy
This is NOT a bad movie and it follows the novel it was based on pretty well. I enjoyed it. I even bought it on DVD. Don't expect Minority Report here. This is simply B-Movie Fun. Lou Diamond Phillips is fine in his role as the local law. The guano jokes abound. And like someone said...there's even a mad scientist!!!

Auggie Rose
(2000)

Excellent Low Key Film; Goodblum is very fine in the lead.
Not every movie needs blazing guns or Special FX. This touching film is very good. Also know as Beyond Suspicion, Auggie Rose is a character study that could almost be a classic Twilight Zone episode. I recommend this for serious film fans. Anne Heche and Jeff Goldblum are very good. All the actors are top notch.---alan
