The New Look
(2024)

ABSURD STORY
THE AUTHORS OF THE SCRIPT CERTAINLY ARE NOT VERY WELL INFORMED ABOUT THE TIME PERIOD AND LEAST OF ALL ABOUT THE STORY OF FASHION DURING THAT ERA. THEY ARE WRONG IN MANY, MANY ASPECTS, FROM THE DETAILS (CHRISTIAN DIOR WAS B A L D, TOTALLY BALD SINCE HE WAS VERY YOUNG, THEY SHOULD HAVE RESPECTED THAT JUST FOR THE PURPOSE OF VEROSIMILITUD) TO THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS IN FRENCH HISTORY, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FASHION WORLD, THE NAZIS AND THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT OF THE TIME. ITS A PITY AMERICAN MOVIE WRITERS AND PRODUCERS ARE ALWAYS SO IGNORANT ABOUT THE HISTORY OF OTHER COUNTRIES, ABOVE ALL WHEN DEALING WITH CULTURE OR ART. OH, AND ANOTHER THING: THEY ARE CALLING CHURCHILL "SIR WINSTON"... AND HE HAD NOT BEEN KNIGHTED YET!!!! READ A LITTLE HISTORY BEFORE YOU TRY TO TALK ABOUT IT...

American Animals
(2018)

America A...holes
Oh, my God, $11 and almost 2 hours lost in the stupid story of a group of unfunny assholes! Not a terrible movie, somewhat creative, good acting, not badly written, but... are the 4 dumbest guys in history worth giving them attention, time and money?

Los buenos demonios
(2018)

It is sooo bad.
Incredibly, this movie is even worse than the other pics of this director. I can't fathom why any money and effort should be spend in this kind of 'production'.

Desde Allá
(2015)

Really bad — it deserves little attention
After seeing this incomparably BAD Venezuelan movie today at the Miami Film Festival I couldn't understand how it could have ever won the Golden Lion (main prize) at the Venice Film Festival 2015, unless the members of the jury had been drugged or were profoundly drunk. I went and searched to see who had been the members of the jury and found the answer right away: Alfonso Cuarón was the president, and in movie festivals the selection of the president is decisive. Cuarón just wanted to favor a Latinamerican director, that was all. This TERRIBLE film is defective from all points of views, and it would not even pass a Cinema 101 exam. That's probably the reason why it has been shown in a few festivals but it hasn't had regular distribution, and the opinion of the critics has not been very helpful to it. On top of all that it is incredibly boring... Go at your own risk.

Barrio Cuba
(2005)

Dreadful movie
Of all the Cuban movies than I have seen, this is by far the worst of all (and believe me, I have suffered many a bad one). Production values are so incredibly poor that you realize that the concept "cine pobre" that the director subscribes is just an excuse for an extreme lack of talent. From the content point of view, this movie also --like other Cuban productions-- asserts, in veiled but irrefutable ways, that Cubans, not Castro's revolution, are the culprits for the island terrible situation. Also, acting is very amateurish and the cinematography very old style. It's boring, repetitive, dogmatic, clichéd, and very, very passé (looks like a bad Brazilian movie from the 60's.)Don't waste your time or money on this abysmal and politically biased production.

The Lost City
(2005)

Andy García's work of love and courage
Critics all over have trashed this movie on account on its politics, angry at the way García has depicted Che Guevara as the real murderer he was, at the way he has portrayed the profound injustices and oppression of Fidel Castro's regime, at the way it does not conform to the sympathetic view Hollywood has always had about the Cuban Revolution. The movie suffers sometimes from the inexperienced hand of a first-time director, the lack of the epic budget it needed, and the poor acting of Inés Sastre but it is not a bad movie, not at all. It's an extremely entertaining film that uses its modest resources with great care to give us a dignified, sincere, notably balanced and very emotional document of the terrible experience of the Cuban people. Don't believe the extremely biased reviews of The New York Times, The New Yorker, and other media. Go and see it. Music lovers will enjoy a splendid mix of popular and classical Cuban music, and a great original score which will make a nice CD.
