Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
(2006)

Cretins Only . . . . Intelliget need not apply
WITHOUT PREJUDICE

We were RECENTLY subjected to this pile of steaming waste (thankfully we had other diversions to keep the mind alive) and rejoiced that no money had been spent (wasted) in procuring a copy to watch.

From the opening bathroom humor to the assault on Pam Anderson, there can be no movie more worthy of avoiding than this mindless attempt to insult just about everyone.

To write any further would only attribute more wasted minutes to a film that deserves to be ignored, forgotten and destroyed.

Those who think political correctness is a virtue now have their Antichrist. Those in favor of censorship now have a viable platform. We however support neither and those with more than 2 digit IQs will surely know better and rise above the stench created by another rude, self serving wannabe whose only intellectual match on earth is decaying in some toxic landfill. In case you were shallow enough to enjoy this bit of video crap, I mean this ALL in a nice way.

Unlikely Angel
(1996)

Its a Christmas Movie. No more. No less.
More for Dolly's fans than for those who crave Roddy McDowell.

Light hearted with a ton of clichés, but what part of Christmas Movie don't you understand. Ingredients include, 1 Single (widowed) Dad. 2 kids with attitude 1 Large chested country singer and a dash of Roddy McDowell as St Peter. Its predictable and almost too cute at times, and as another review suggests, Dolly's wardrobe is not exactly classic Edith Head, but it does keep her in character.

It'll leave you happier than hours of TV crime, deceit, violence, or Jerry Springer. (BUT so will Bourbon & Prozac for those who feel they are above the "Non Classic" Xmas fare)

Poolhall Junkies
(2002)

For Billiard players only! BUT very Entertaining,
The critics hated this flick, which in some cases can be a blessing. If your rent check has ever been hanging on the end of your cue, you'll appreciate the story as well as the characters. The pool talent speaks for itself in this movie, while being used in enough scenes to keep your interest. There are a few superfluous side plots, but there's only so much you can do in a pool movie, especially if you want to keep it real.

Its not hard to find a bad review for this one, but if you read some of the comments, it seems most people simply DON"T GET IT. Complaining that its like another movie (every pool movie) is as lame as panning movies about race cars because they aren't as good as Grand Prix or Winning. One submission actually suggested that Vince Vaughn would have been a better choice for the lead, so are we to be believe that Will Ferrell would have been a better choice for Chris Walken's role?

Lets face it folks. Pool is not held in very high esteem, and Snooker is much too difficult for most to play or embrace the strategies and time requirements.

Pool Hall Junkies is not the Hustler, nor was it intended to be. Its another movie with some good scenes, some decent acting by decent actors (although Ricky S would not have been my first pick for the protégé) and its considered a CLASSIC among some pro billiard players who don't pick it apart for its faults but rather enjoy it for its entertainment value. YES real Pros. Men and even some ladies from the WPBA tour. Some of the world's best were at the Premiere.

And for the Vince V fans . . . . lets face it; the only actor in the world who is more 1 dimensional is Kevin Costner.

Lemme think! Waterworld? The Postman? No thanks . . . Junkies blows 'em away. But then again, we're dealing with a public who is fascinated with the qualities of fast food eateries and Paris Hilton.

The Greatest Game Ever Played
(2005)

Much better than expected
Rainy day with not much to do. We were surfing the movie network channels and found this one just starting, so we gave it a chance.

The more we watched, the more we became engrossed in the story. Its the old story of working class underdog trying to make it in a sport which at the time (1913 I think) was usually played by the wealthy upper class but this movie was every bit as interesting as Seabiscuit and this is also based on a true story.

The acting is believable and the casting is brilliant. AND . . . . we are NOT golfers, so please don't miss this one just because its about golf. Any individual sport would serve the plot, because it's about the people. Golf works well for this story because of the class distinction and snobbery that seem to involve some who play the game.

Bottom line . . . . Its a feel good movie. It's well put together and isn't it always fun to see those who think they are better than others get taken down a peg or two.

The Idolmaker
(1980)

Tremendously Underrated
Keepin' it brief I fully agree with other comments found in these reviews.

A VERY good movie, and fun place to see 2 of todays stars in their FIRST movie appearances.

There is an almost haunting quality to Sharkeys character. Driven to a fault to live vicariously through more handsome men that he could control just long enough to see them reach his own goal.

Good supporting cast, and well filmed, with a few sound problems and mediocre, lighting. Being Far Too critical.

Watch for Joe Pantoliano and Peter Gallagher, And consider how Sharkey could have given Kevin Spacey a run for his money in "Beyond the Sea"

Nows there's food for an argument.

On my top 10 Music related pix.

Soleil rouge
(1971)

Watchable but disappointing
Another IMDb member suggested in their comments that a nude scene from Ursule Andress should help save a movie. Add another brief nude brothel moment, and Cappucine and a cast of otherwise pretty good actors and the movie becomes watchable but continuity disasters and bad directing can't garner much more than a mediocre 5 out of 10. Watch for wardrobe blunders as well. Anachronisms are so rampant that we found ourselves watching for more as we labored through the amateur camera work and dialog. If you're a Bronson fan, then sitting through this is mandatory so the "Ive seen all of his movies" quote can be used with pride, but I doubt this one is in his personal top 10 favorites.

This is one movie that Mifune would probably like to forget this one as well..

Belly of the Beast
(2003)

Only as good as his co-stars
Their are only so many feasable plots for these "White Guy Martial arts" flicks. The daughter thing was overdone years ago. Alas, poor Stevie doesn't have the likes of Kelly LeBrock, or Tommy Lee Jones any more, to help save his movies.Under Siege was O K because he was surrounded by better actors. You can see the problem with "Belly" from the opening scenes. Shortcomings continue through laborious dialogue and continuity flaws that make the audience wonder if this movie was actually seen by its purveyors prior to release.

The only thing S S has done well in his last parade of mediocrity is his death while attempting to board a jet, saving the movie for his more talented counterparts who eventually went on to save the plane and some of their careers.

Secondhand Lions
(2003)

A rare movie with a perfect cast
Ever watch a movie and find yourself wishing the director had chosen a different actor or actress to play a key character? It happens to us all the time. (O K, maybe were too critical, but if the actor is not believable in the role, the viewer only sees the actor and loses the character; which results in "Pause, go get snack and drink, try again. This movie, for me is an example of perfect casting, where in no case was I longing for a different face or person to portray one of the principles.<p> Caine and Duvall are PERFECT. H J Osment is just the right contrast for the 2 aging Uncles. Even Kyra Sedgewick is right for the uncaring, if not flakey Mother.I did however long for Gary Sinese as the new boyfriend.<p> Even the animal cast is wonderful and adding a pet pig to the array of dogs adds a comedic but endearing touch.<p> Most Macho guys won't allow themselves to enjoy this movie, based on the pretense alone. So while all the Testosterone jockeys are caught up in the world of Kill Bill and other Martial Arts commercials, turn off your ego and watch Secondhand Lions. I bet you'll feel much better after this movie than you did after Mission Impossible or Matrix or a plethora of other "violence for the sake of violence" flix.

Days of Thunder
(1990)

Thanks to Robert Duvall
A fair race movie with a winning performance by Robert Duvall.

Kidmann is not believable as Cruise's Doctor, their are major continuity flaws in the race scenes, but Duvall's performance as a caring Builder and Pit Crew boss give the movie an endearing quality. And Cruise looks ridiculous on a Harley, even with a low seat and pull back bars, he can barely reach the controls or the ground. A Honda Rebel would have been more appropriate.

As Driven is the all time worst race movie, watching Days Of Thunder after Driven will make Cruise and company seem much better than watching "Days" after a Classic like Grand Prix.

Hey it could be a lot worse. Imagine this flick with the Baldwin brothers. UGH !

Freaky Friday
(2003)

HUGE disappointment
Shame on me for assuming that Jamie Lee Curtis would not accept a role far beneath her ability, and consequently return her to the B movie status she enjoyed during her Friday the 13th period. One would hope that period of her acting career was behind her. This movie has no redeeming values. It drags through laborious attempts at humor that has been regurgitated Disney style, but hopefully for the last time. The acting is strained at best. There are more continuity errors than Pulp Fiction on "Random play". The movie is to Jamie Lee Curtis as Ishtar is to Dustin Hoffman, or Gigli to Ben Afleck. Thank God we didn't buy it, although it would serve as a last ditch cure for insomnia.

The Last Samurai
(1990)

Justified criticism
Huge disappointment. Usually Lance Henriksen can offer some redeeming qualities to even the worst script as he did in Stone Cold. BUT, no one could save this movie. Continuity has been ignored with a passion. The story is WEAK and remains unjustified right through the final credits. This is not even a "rainy day watch." This is movie for laying down and avoiding. AND; as far as the DVD being "digitally re-mastered;" I fear the master was beyond help, because even state of the art home theatre could not make the audio enjoyable. The next time you want visitors to leave, fire this movie up, and you'll have your privacy in no time.

Second String
(2002)

Worth watching?
One of the better "underdog" sports movies. Voigt is strong and believable. Bellows is good but as others noted, T Polo's character is shallow and forgettable, like her contrived performance (her lines are strained) G Eads is better here than on CSI and he gets big points for making the viewers dislike him. Even though its predictable, this is much better than "The Replacements" and other films with this premise. Worth watching? you bet.

American Nitro
(1979)

An ex racer's view of some historical footage
I gave this an "8" from a ex racer's point of view. Its not a great movie but the classic footage of some of the cars that changed Drag Racing is fun to watch. These guys are the ones that put people in the stands and made Drag Racing a huge sport with spectators as well. No "Rice Rockets" or computers here. No nitrous to cover your shortcomings or mistakes. Just major horsepower with ground shaking excitement from the early years of legal Drag Racing.
