Closer
(2004)

Sex chit chat.
This movie is an exercise of talking about sex in a hard way. But is only that: dialogue. If these four characters (Dan and Larry, both English; Alice & Anna, American) really talk ¨dirty¨ why the talking is not translated into action. Sex, sex.. Yes I wanted to see sex. With no action, it is all bla, bla, bla and it becomes boring after 60 or 65 minutes. That was when I realized the modus operandi of the director. I am referring to the how the movie is edited. Goes from a scene with one couple, then to the other couple, with the same dialogue. So it is repetitive and what is worst, the scenes are very long, hard to tolerate. But performances are very good. Clive Owen is better than the others. Good music, great view of London. My rating: 3 out of 10. Andres.

Ju-on
(2002)

Great
I am writing this commentary right after finishing with the movie. I rented this DVD in order to see it Saturday night. It was a pleasant surprise, gave me the creeps ALL the movie. To begin with I would like to say that the movie is divides in episodes. Every episode is strange, creepy therefore frightening (with good scares) I am happy because it was EFFECTIVE. I WAS frightened. Horror is a genre where you can find lots of garbage. But suspense was well driven till the end and the actors were pretty good. I read a comment of the movie were the author said he was not entirely scared. It was not my case. I am still trembling. 10/10. Andrés.

Paprika
(1991)

Sexy good movie
The plot is very simple. In late '50s a young lady starts working as a prostitute in a brothel in order to help his boyfriend. She thinks that is the easiest way to make money. I do agree. Mr. Tinto Brass centered the view in Debora Caprioglio, who plays the roll of Paprika. Hell, she is very hot, sensual... but as nothing is perfect in her life she will go from one place to another and this is a kind of repetitive. She is filmed from every angle you can imagine. You can imagine that with the view centered on Caprioglio the other ladies are not seen in plenitude. Doesn't matter Caprioglio is the hottest woman in the movie and is a well chosen actress for the leading actress. Her performance is very good. Finally I would like to say that this movie is far from pornography. Brass actual is close to porno. But this one has a simple plot, is funny, long but could be seen. 6/10 Andrés.

Bad Moon
(1996)

Good movie
The movie is very entertaining and has the look shared by Thor the dog (Primo) and uncle Ted played by Michael Pare. Good action, very good opening and better ending.

The movie itself is the story of a man by day, wolf at night and the consequences that this cause. It is not new, was done before but is entertaining, short and has a scene of sex.

The dog is far the best of the film. Good performances delivered Pare, Mariel Hemingway and Mason Gamble (Janet the mother and Brett the son). 7/10.

Andres.

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie
(1990)

Brilliant
Tales... is an excellent entertaining movie. The wraparound story is about a woman who is going to eat a boy. So this boy tells her three stories to delay the purpose of the lady. Lot 249 updated from an Arthur Conan Doyle story is really funny. Watching Steve Buscemi, Christian Slater, Juliane Moore and others in the story about a mummy covering life.

The second story (Cat's from hell), written by George A. Romero from a Stephen's King story, has some frightening moments when you look at the eyes of the black cat who was the object of murder. A millionaire hires a hit man to do the job. But the best comes towards the end with "Lovers Vow" where an artist deals with a very terrifying creature in order to save his life. He is awarded with a beautiful wife if he does not tell a word that this devil exist. Amusing. I shouted a lot. Really, gave me the creeps. And the conclusion is great. 10/10. Andrés.

Schizoid
(1980)

Two thumbs down
I don't know what is worse about this movie. 1) It is very predictable. 2) It is very stupid. Is it 1 or 2? I was bothered because I spent 89 minutes with this movie and I considered it was a waste of time. The premise of a murderer with scissors looked good but there is not a pinch of idea in it. Dr Fales (Kinski) is a psychiatrist who leads a group of therapy. His daughter Allison (Wilkes) is a rebel teenager who is against the doctor's new company Julie (Hill). Allison's mother died and Julie would take her place. So, she is sick 'n tired of the group and of Julie. What about her? She is a reporter who is in the way of getting the divorce from her husband Doug (Wasson). There is more: she helps people under the name of Dr. Love. She starts receiving threats by letter. The ladies from the group are being found stabbed one by one. "Don't let me kill again" blah, blah, blah. So, who are we dealing with? who is the killer? Could it be Dr. Fales who has sex with the ladies from the therapy group? Maybe his daughter? What about Julie's husband? I think that renting this movie would be a waste of movie. It is worse If you see it. A waste of time. At least performances were acceptable. 3 out of 10. Andrés.

Ying xiong
(2002)

Beautiful movie with some weak points
I see Nameless. I see Broken Sword and Flying Snow too. There is a problem of screenplay here. What is more important? Nameless or the beautiful soap opera between Broken Sword and Flying Snow? Not to forget Moon. I believe slow motion does not work for every scene and sequence of fights is less or not entertaining or thrilling at all. Some are OK. But not in all the movie.

Sensations: Sleepy. Boring. Tense. In the sky. Energetic and yes, entertaining at last. There was a point when I said to myself: bye bye, too boring and if I want to see a soap opera, not in the cinema.

But the images are great, the music awesome (specially the violin solos by Itzak Perlman) and the performances very good. I wanted rhythm, thrills. I could not feel it in almost the entire movie. 7 out of 10. Andres.

Shocker
(1989)

This film might be the best of Wes Craven
Shocker is one of Wes Craven film's best. It has a very imaginative plot that goes weird sometimes and the final half hour or a bit more than very entertaining. It starts a bit of slow. I mean till the execution you have 45 minutes. But after that point the movie goes better. Very good performances and music. Mitch Pileggi portrays Pinker the killer so damned good that you must see his face to believe it. For the record: two thumbs up in music and entertainment.

Great Pileggi and very good the rest. And the last 30 minutes amazing. I rate this movie: 8 out of 10.

Under Suspicion
(1991)

Clever thriller
Very well acted and filmed this clever, agile suspense thriller won't let you down because of the reason that the intrigue will not allow to switch off your video of DVD player. The place: England, late 50's. The topic: laws of divorce. Adultery. Just take a photograph for evidence. This was forged in order to oblige the spouse to divorce. You only have to find the lover. Tony Aaron (Neeson) was the man who used his wife to simulate adultery. But she will die with a powerful man. The man's misterious lover (Laura San Giacomo) gets in between the case. A battle will start for Aaron to prove that his innocence. Suspense till the end. I rate this movie 9 out 10. Andres.

Fallo!
(2003)

Me piaze (I like it)
Very funny film composed by six short stories just like "Miranda", "The Voyeur" all by Tinto Brass and some of their habitual cast or crew.

You can find an excellent use of the came, light and the red color that is seen in nearly the six stories, and the nasty/loose girls ready for pleasure. Do you like being observed? Another interesting matter that this movie includes. The last story is definitely the best of the movie. The name: Dime porca que me piaze!!! To conclude. It is Definitely a movie for Tinto Brass fans.

Non fans: Your choice. 8 out 10. Andres.

O Caminho das Nuvens
(2003)

A pain in the a...
I though this movie was going to be different. The trailer made me think that. But I was mistaken. The story of a poor family that travels on several bicycles 3200 kilometers to go to Rio de Janeiro where the man of the family hopes to get a job of 1000 reales to feed the necessities of the family. Of course, the travel wasn't going to be perfect. We now that. Happens in every road movie. The problems of this movie are: 1) You know from the beginning towards the end what is going to happen.

2) Performances. There isn't any performance with at least a grade of intensity. The family is not portrayed like people desperate to survive. I mean, it is a long travel and they go on a bike. 3) Photography. When I look to the sky I thought that was painted, NOT real. The clouds seemed to be painted too. Maybe towards the end of the movie you could find a CREDIBLE image. 4) Resuming: all of these factors should have made a true real movie. It is just the opposite. At least, the woman and the boy sang very very well. 2 out of 10. Andres.

American Pie 2
(2001)

Nice, funny and romantic.
American Pie 2 is a very funny sequel of the American Pie series. But what I loved in this movie is the romantic story focused on Jim and Michelle. Like the song of Nat King Cole also sang by Sinatra: LOVE WAS MADE FOR ME AND YOU. Meaning Jim and Michelle. The rest is more of the same (for good) but with some jokes even funnier or disgusting (you choose). For instance the one about the glue.

Great music, gorgeous chicks and a very good performance of the couple in love played by Jason Biggs and Allyson Hannigan. 7.5 OUT of 10.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show
(1975)

Thought it was going to end before
Free your mind. That is what you have to do to take a look at this cult bizarre classic. But thought it would end before. The final sequence is very good but very long. Great music, very good performances(Meatloaf on top)in this highly BIZARRE movie. So take it or deal with it. For all the classic horror midnight fans. And LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAIN!!!. 7 out of 10. Andrés.

Nueces para el amor
(2000)

Saw this movie again due to chat with a friend
Saw this film again after nearly 5 months. I was listening to the soundtrack and that reminded me that I should have had a chat about it on January with a friend that didn't like this movie at all. From the heart, I found it beautiful starting from the soundtrack, the division of colors that separates parts (decades) and some aspects related to photography, etc. But what I always say is about the feeling, the emotions. But trying to concentrate of what my pal said about the poor dialogs, I mean, he is right. I think that dialogs are the most important thing to take care. Even if you give to a good director a movie with a poor screenplay, he won't make it better. Andrés.

Sólo mía
(2001)

Poor movie due to the screenplay
I went to Spain last week with my family for a wedding. I was suggested to buy "Te doy mis ojos" due to recommendations and critics. My dad was listening. So we went for it. While I was in another part of the store taking a look, my father came with this movie. "This is it", said my dad. I accepted to buy it because Sergi Lopez was in it. Thank god he played a very difficult character with his experience in acting. So, he did not let me down. The movie did. I will try to be brief to make my point here. Sergi played Joaquin a man who beats his beautiful wife Angela (Paz Vega). What I did not like is that the movie shows that he is the only one guilty, like her friend Andrea (Elvira Minguez) said. I mean, she was going to have a baby and she lightened a smoke. That is silly after a warning of him. The characters played both like children. The difference was that Joaquin went insane or any other adjective you wanna add. I think that some parts were not very intense, hard and the story demanded. Performances were pretty good with the best on Elvira Minguez and Alberto Jimenez (Andrea and his husband). My rating: 4.5 out of 10. Andres.

Elephant
(2003)

Quite boring but Ok.
Two teens killed a lot of people in their school in one day such us Michael's Moore "Bowling for Columbine" That is all. Boys talking about girls, girls taking about boys and a guy with a camera taking photos. Teens talking about their usual things. Things that seem stupid but, we were teens too. What I don't like of the film is that the long shots lead to bore and decreases the level of the film should have. Van Sant is not Sokurov and this film is not "Russian Ark" which was shot like this. Violence seems not believable like this films showed. Besides it is boring. There are very good moments for example when one of the killers played the piano, the scene in the shower. I give it a 7/10. Watch Michael's Moore documentary. It is far realist than this film. Andres.

Elling
(2001)

Is this movie taking me for a fool?
I've been told that the Norwegian Estate do this kind of things. What I don't believe is that life in Norway is just simple that you can go out and walk freely from place to place and that people is so glad to help one to each other and finally Is Norway a country without burglars and rapers? Don't they have a high level of alcohol there? Why Elling mentions that there are thieves and rapists and this is not shown in the movie? If you show this movie in a country that is in crisis, this leads me to believe that this is a move from the government. From the principal authorities to the less important. They all want the people to believe that we, people, could be like this. This is such paranoid and negative from my side. I'll tell you why. I don't believe this could be possible. I hardly consider this would happen as a possibility. When a people like the man in charge of culture will see this movie then they will make some kind of discount for the audience in order to go and see the movie. This is why I'm such paranoid. And I also don't believe in politics. Coming back to the movie I'll say that performances are very good specially Per Christian Ellefsen that portrays Elling. There are some funny moments (specially towards the end) and good drama parts with the social worker. But this "real life" does not exist. Not in Norway and never in Argentina. 5 out of 10. Andrés.

My Life Without Me
(2003)

Not a K.O.
This movie should have been a knockout for everybody. But it wasn't. With a story that leads to tears, I didn't cry but I should have done it. You have a tumor, the doctor said. She manages to do the best in the rest of her life. She will write ten things to do before she's dead. She does it so fast that left me thinking: How did he write this ten things without thinking a bit? She writes one after the other. Took her one minute. That is strange. I think this movie should have had more music score and have had to be spoken in the nature language of the director and producers: that would be Spanish. That would have lead everybody to a K.O. In spite of this you'll find very good acting and photography. I give this movie a 7 out of 10. Andrés.

Music of the Heart
(1999)

Give me some lovin'
Wes Craven wanted to get out of the genre of horror. He did it with a very good drama that tell us some things: 1) The love of the music, the passion shown by everybody. The teacher's initiative leads to a students passion. Remember the scene of the boy going to practice the violin instead of playing football. 2) That the system could be fought. A white teacher in one of toughest neighborhood of N.Y: East Harlem trying to integrate everybody.

3) Related to this is the prejudice of the people who says: No, it's impossible to join people with different skin color. With great performances of Angela Bassett and Meryl Streep, this movie should be seen everywhere and sensible people should cry like I did it when I saw it the first time. I wasn't so sensible yesterday night. You can criticize that this is a very predictable movie with a happy end. But this doesn't mean the movie is bad. Because every blockbuster film has a happy end. So I rate this movie a 9 out of 10. Andrés.

El abrazo partido
(2004)

Thanks Danny
I don't like Daniel Burman's movies. I don't recommend them. I solve my prejudice with this one. This movie is agile, simple and effective. This movie has a very good second part and increases the level towards the end.

The film tells the story of Ariel Makaroff (Daniel Hendler), Jewish, late twenties with a mentality of a teenager. He runs from one place to another and he his idea consists in going abroad with Polish documents. He is running from the crisis of the country and all the people seems to have no brain. His father left him when he was a baby to go to war. Apparently his father went abroad for a different reason that Ariel will find out towards the second part of the movie. Simple plot, great ending.

Performances are very good with an Oscar for Adriana Aizemberg who plays the role of the mother. I would like to thank Burman for solving my prejudice. A well received award in Berlin. I give this movie a 9 out of 10. Andrés.

Público/Privado
(2004)

Very poor short
I am wondering why this short was given awards in cinema festivals. I think there is no acting and that is a point to consider. I think we all need more acting and this should have been taken more seriously than it is shown. More time is needed. This is not a topic for a short film. Argentina's crisis of the early 2003 needs more time than 15 minutes and that is the basic problem that the director couldn't solve. This is a topic for a feature length movie. The photography is quite good and some shots were actually very good. I rate this short movie 3 out of 10. Andrés.

Revancha de un amigo
(1987)

Interesting story poorly taken to the screen
Santiago Carlos Oves is a heck of a screenwriter. He writes better than hi directs. Same happens in the U.S. with Brian Helgeland.

Ariel (Ricardo Darin) comes from a six year exile due to the military government in Argentina. A friend was killed and his father was dead with no clear reasons. So he investigates. A sinister company was involved in this matter. Problems are: acting, intensity and climax. All related. I don't think that Mr. Darin is a "bad" actor. The same for the rest (his girlfriend played by Luisa Kuliok, Lorenzo Quinteros, Juan Leyrado, etcetera). So Mr. Oves couldn't lead these actors. Are was unable. Maybe because this film was his debut in the director's category. Let me give you an example: the sex scene. Poor directed. They actors don't feel anything, neither do you. An argument: They discuss as if they are having a coffee. Luckily the intention you couldn't find, with great difficulty you can see it near the end. A great photography by Carlos Torlaschi (in the dark scenes) and a very good music by Ulises Butron. I rate this movie: 4.5 out of 10. Andres.

Youngblood
(1986)

Marado...Marado...
Hockey is passion. I know it even though I'm in the "other side" of the world. I watched lots of games. I like hockey. That's why I wanted to see the movie. Is it a good and realistic hockey film? I really don't know that so far. But passion and personality is needed in order to play the game. I really would like to know if this movie is accorded to the reality of hockey. Times had passed. This movie was made 18 years ago and it was released here in Argentina. Even though we shouldn't know what hockey is about. When I find a hockey game in cable TV I want to see it.

Rob Lowe portrays a hockey ace in advance. His father is a farmer who works with his older brother (a former player). Youngblood wants to play in New York but first he must increase his level of hockey and personality because hockey is a rude sport. He falls in love with the coach's daughter and tries to get the friendship of the star of the team name is Derek Sutton (Patrick Swayze). We are not naive, he'll be a star (I wonder if he'll play in Madison Square Garden) scoring a hat-trick in the final game. I liked both performances (Lowe and Swayze) but I recognized a great work of Cinthia Gibb (as Youngblood's girl). Like Maradona in soccer from a simple home to a star. I liked this movie. I really want to know why it doesn't portray hockey's reality. I rate this movie 6 out of 10. Andres.

School of Rock
(2003)

Two thumbs up!!!
This movie is a tribute to rock 'n' roll. AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Cream, The Ramones, The Clash, The Who, Stevie Nicks and more.

This is a story of a looser without job that gets a call for a friend and become him. We have seen that. But this movie entertains you from the beginning to the end with full of joy and jokes and very good performances (specially Joan Cusack). And you have the music and memorable quotes and moments (when Dewey seduces Rosalie, the principal of the school is epic). And the kids can act, and know how to do it. They are gifted. Musically speaking (all of them) and some of them acting (one of the best is Kevin Clark as Freddie the drummer). I saw this movie twice and I find it excellent.

Well, if you want to find defects you could say about that we seen this, some things like how can he be a teacher without giving information or how he entered teaching in the school. Or if you thing Jack Black overacts. That may be true but the overacting is the main characteristic of his character.

With brilliant moments, the great music and the fact that you wont be looking at your watch to see how many minutes left and this is very important because it's related to be bored.

The performances are great and I salute you, Richard Linklater, Mike White, Jack Black, the kids and specially Joan Cusack.

Finally I would have liked that the song School of Rock would have had a nomination for the Academy Awards. A pity. I rate this movie a 10 out of 10.

Lost in Translation
(2003)

A deception and a failure
I am very disappointed of what I saw in this movie. I really don't believe in "platonic" love. Besides the screenplay is very poor because of the lack of jokes (it is supposed to be a comedy mixed with melodrama romance). The constant repetition of both characters with problems to speak Japanese is the only funny element that I found in the movie. So there is obviously repetitions. And I would like to ask Sofia Coppola how the character of the girl can have a degree at the age of 19? The only degree is the one of the high school at that age. And the movie is boring. It is 100 minutes long and seems to be the double. The positive things are the photography, the music, the performance of Bill Murray and the beauty of Scarlett Johansson. That is way I rate this movie a 4 out of 10. Andres.
