The Punisher
(2017)

Great season 1 undermined by a comparatively weak and repetitive season 2
Season one was great, season 2 a significant step down in terms of narrative with repetitive story and action beats.

Strongest character building done was with the main villain Billy. Pilgrim was a complex and interesting character but basically all over the place. Other characters commit actions and deeds to the point where the so-called 'heroes' of the story seemed just as deserving of comeuppance as the villains, making for a muddled show. Its actually difficult to root for Frank Castle and Maidani at times, both sides do irredeemable things and the morality is a complete mess.

The fact that the girl at the centre of the story makes such stupid decisions and is for the most part very ungrateful, makes you wonder why Frank didn't just leave her to be taken at the bar in episode 2/1 and just take off with Beth and her son to start a new life.

The Walking Dead: Home Sweet Home
(2021)
Episode 17, Season 10

All par for the course.....
Introduce some new disposable characters so they can be killed - give them names, it makes them more relatable.

Let any projectiles hit said characters and miss all the heroes.

Introduce a new human threat because they've just killed the last one and the zombies alone aren't enough for some reason.

Conjure up some mildly perilous situations to get out of and ensure they go into the woods where the field of view isn't too great.

Play some slow montages of characters pulling serious faces with some folkey music over the top.

Daryl looked bored.

I used to love this show.....

Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise
(2015)

Jesse Stone - Like slipping into a comfortable pair of slippers.
We need more of these. Each one gives us that familiarity, a relatable but flawed human character surrounded by equally flawed, quirky but very likeable individuals. An idyllic setting, beautiful music and photography. An overall very relaxing vibe. Just hearing the theme music makes me feel comfortable.

This is not a review of this particular entry, but the Jesse Stone movies in general. They are high quality, well written and eminently watchable.

May there be many more.

Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
(2017)

The original is still there whenever you want it.....
Yes we all know, loved and grew up with the original... but my 6 year old never had a clue what it was. Despite my enthusiasm for the original a lot has changed in live action adaptations over the years and willy wonka, sadly, has lost some of its appeal to modern children. Yes they could have done a straight up animated version - but integrating characters to the story that today's kids are familiar with gives us the opportunity to share a fairly close adaptation of a film we love, in a way that our kids can relate and be drawn into.

I can't say this new version annoyed me at all with the changes they made, and my son absolutely loves it - so seeing as it was made for children, what do we know and who are we to judge???

6/10 from me, 10/10 from my 6 year old for an overall 8/10.

Blood and Bone
(2009)

a breath of (not so) fresh air
we've seen it all before over and over, but rarely have i enjoyed a straightforward martial arts film so much as i did when i watched 'Blood and Bone'......

Michael Jai White is an amazing martial artist and a very decent actor, up there with such natural talent as that of recent stars like Tony Jaa and the more veteran Donnie Yen - all, still, yet to become big Hollywood stars sadly....

despite being clichéd to all hell, it is a fight film let's not forget!!, the storyline for 'blood and bone' is JUST engaging enough to hold your attention for the brief periods between the fantastically executed fight scenes. nobody will rent or buy this movie expecting anything more than a run of the mill low budget actioner and if i were to rent it again not knowing, i'd hopefully think the same - only then will you genuinely be surprised at just how good a fight film this is - all the acting is pretty damn good for a film in this genre and the supporting fighters do a great job of keeping the action ticking over nicely throughout.

i agree with an earlier comment, its definitely a re-hash of well trodden territory first covered (to my knowledge) in van dammes lionheart/A.W.O.L around twenty years ago... but this doesn't take away from the fact that within the film there is an immensely talented martial artist putting everything he possibly can on the screen - for probably not a lot of money. tthe film is gritty, hard hitting yet not taking itself too seriously all at the same time. it was also refreshing to see camera-work going back to basics in this movie and letting you watch the fight unfold in front of you rather than trying to make it seem frenetic by throwing the camera around violently and cutting away every 2 seconds - this is how you know whether the people 'in camera' genuinely have the skills as a martial artist - something glaringly obvious in white....

all in all, a fantastic movie thats gets ten out of ten from me, just because it more than satisfied my appetite for a fight film - therefore, it achieved EXACTLY what it set out to do.

more of this please mr white!!!!! and to anyone watching the movie, don't switch it off when the credits roll - wait to see the bad guy get whats coming to him ;)
