The Bear: Honeydew
(2023)
Episode 4, Season 2

TV just doesn't get any better than this.
What an episode...television just doesn't get any better than this. The rhythm, the cinematography, the sensitivity, the music, the location (a character in itself), the direction, the depth of character, the acting, the hug - woah...Tears in my eyes in multiple moments.

As an actor I must congratulate Will Poulter on his performance - beautifully balanced, subtle, truthful, understated, the perfect dish - bravo.

Only complaint: why don't we get more TV like this!?

The Bear is such a joy and delivers on every level, I didn't know how they could possibly improve upon season 1 and yet somehow they've made that feel like an amuse bouche.

Can't recommend this series and this episode highly enough.

The Sandman
(2022)

Children's tv with 1 second of horror
Feels like watching Saturday afternoon kids tv (Merlin etc) but with 1 horrific moment per episode. Could have been so dark and intense and beautiful...but it isn't - tone is confused and ultimately a real let down.

Mamoudou Athie
Of course reviews are subjective, but as an actor I'm compelled to say I think Mamoudou Athie gives a wonderful and compelling performance as the lead; subtle, pensive, sensitive and with great depth. Yes, the series is slow - but so is a wonderful massage and a nice cuppa tea - chill, enjoy the pace and intrigue...or maybe switch back to Tiktok...

You Belong to Me
(2021)

Comically bad
Fairly well acted considering the material, but this is a terribly written and utterly predictable waste of time, money and effort. I watched the whole thing and had to laugh at the end. Avoid.

The Haunting of Bly Manor
(2020)

The real horror is watching this
My God this is bad...really really bad. Clunky, poor writing, poor direction, rushed, confused, laboured, silly and don't get me started on the accents, poor casting and the decision not to film in the UK. At one point a policeman enters and I honestly questioned whether I was watching an am dram performance of The Mousetrap in some American backwater. The 1 star is for some fine actors doing their best with this horror of a show. Ps I loved the Haunting of Hill House - someone needs to have a good look in the mirror about this one though (just watch out for some man with headlights for eyes).

Suspiria
(2018)

Intense, brooding, atmospheric and rewarding
I loved being immersed in the world of The Markos Tanz academy. Old school horror built on the power of suggestion, suspense and atmosphere.

Theatre is so powerful
What an absolute joy, the cast and the production are mesmerising. Utterly compelling and addictive, I can't get it out of my head - neither do I want. Thank you for sharing and for your talent! Support theatre!!

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker
(2019)

What a load of crap
Oh dear. No rhythm...no intimacy...brain dead desperate plot line with cringeworthy twists. Poor direction making some of the acting look hammy. Felt vacuous and rudderless - found myself wishing the deathstar would come along and end it all.

The Laundromat
(2019)

Utter rubbish
Like a drama school production... Clunky...under cooked Actors being indulgent and badly directed (what were they thinking - they were thinking money - ironic given the film's subject matter). Shame they couldn't get shell actors to star on their behalf. It's a good subject matter thrown into a washing machine with cheap detergent. Ultimately - this film stinks.

Dirty John
(2018)

Dire. Devoid of depth and subtlety.
This is trash TV...I'm sure the podcast is superb and I'm intrigued by the true story, but oh dear oh dear...it feels contrived, protracted and rushed. Devoid of depth and subtlety - making some fine actors look horribly wooden. Ultimately poor production - surprising in this golden age of TV.

Smallfoot
(2018)

Far too busy
Too much faff... Just tell the story... Even my 3 year old became bored and realised this was just rubbish. Ps. James Cordon is not a voice actor.

The Predator
(2018)

Atrocious
Where to begin: I was embarrassed for the actors as I watched it...

Editing all over the place The score was out of place Characters underdeveloped Stagey in every sense CGI very poor Stupid plot, half of which uneccessary Waste of time Taking the mickey out of original?? It was liking a very bad version of the A Team

Ultimately: utter rubbish

Westworld: Reunion
(2018)
Episode 2, Season 2

Lost the plot
Let me start by saying I'm a HUGE fan of season 1 - especially the last episode which was extraordinary...hard act to follow. Well, this feels like an entirely different series which has completely lost the thread, the magic and the subtelty of season 1. Way too many edits and fade to blacks, way too many balls in the air...it's become corny and feels like it's trying way too hard. Different writers? Different producers? Different editor? It feels like an overhaul entirely for the worse. What a damn shame. I'll persevere for 1 more ep, but I feel very let down...

Avengers: Infinity War
(2018)

Blockbusting
This film fizzes and pops - a blockbuster and a half - I would I were a teenager to be able to completely lose myself in its glory...I found it dull in parts - but that's because I'm an old git...as this film encapsulates what an adaptation of a comic should be - intense, fun, funny, inspiring and threatening. The ending is an unexpected treat and one Hollywood has been waiting for - those of us who watch all kinds of films know this kind of ending well and it's about time it featured in a blockbuster - so much so that I do feel many of these exceptional reviews are thanks to the ending...that said a great film and well above the usual fare! Go see

A Quiet Place
(2018)

Cinema at its best
What cinema is all about - what a thrill ride...intense to the extreme...wow.

Wild Wild Country
(2018)

Fascinating madness
Gripping, balanced, insightful and thought provoking look at humanity and how glorious and bonkers we can all be... The Cult of Osho and of the USA laid bare...but which side would you pick? Hmm...

Chef's Table
(2015)

Cooks up a storm
Inspirational stories applicable to any walk of life about having a vision / a dream and having the conviction and faith to pursue it, no matter the cost...most episodes bring me to tears and leave me feeling enthralled - truly exceptional and utterly compelling!

The Defiant Ones
(2017)

Inspirational
Exceptional Docu series...full of great music, great artists, inspirational and utterly compelling. More please...

The Greatest Showman
(2017)

Drivel
I was excited to see this and wanted to like it so badly...As it was I cringed my way through it and couldn't wait for it to end. Utter drivel and hopefully forgettable. Must be a marmite movie...
