War of the Worlds
(2005)

I expected too much...
I have seen the 1953 version many times and always enjoyed the story and special effects, which were very good for that year. I expected to see some great effects, especially from Spielberg and then...nothing. What happened? Did Spielberg just give up on this one? This movie really blows. I guess if you never seen the original movie, you may think this is a good film. You need to rent/download or buy the original just to see what this great story should look like on screen. -------------- Spoiler: Will somebody stop that little girl from screaming!! If the machines were underground all this time, don't you think somebody would have found one by now? The blood... Whats up with the blood thing? Who ever wrote this screenplay took too much license and screwed up the story. This is a classic story. You can change a little here and there to fit the modern times, but you don't completely leave the storyline. --------------- This movie will never amount to anything. Just a flash in the pan. George Pal did a far better job on this story than Spielberg. Hey, Steve...Time to retire. The only thing true to H.G.Well's vision is the tripod machines. If you look on the internet you will find many artist' conceptions of how Mr. Well's described these vehicles. In the original (1953) movie, the machines were sleek, cobra like hover craft with magnetic "legs" and green "death ray" tipped wings. Yes, this was a deviation, however, even so, the machines still followed the storyline. There are those who will say this is a new style for Spielberg and the personal lives of the characters are important and so.. Just don't use a classic to try these 'experiments in film making'. Find a new story to play with, leave the classic stories alone, after all, it's a cheap shot to TRY to improve on perfection.

The Village
(2004)

Great injustice
This movie has been doomed from the minute it was released. Not because it is a bad movie, but the way it was(is) promoted. Everything the media shows in the pre-release advertising has this movie labeled as a HORROR story. It is not. So when the public went to the Theater and payed to see a horror movie, they got p***ed off. If you go to the forums and read the reviews from the general movie going public, the vast majority are saying that this movie sucks. Of course, they expected to see a horror movie, and because they didn't, they felt ripped off. Even in this I.M.D.B. listing, this movie is labeled again as a "horror" movie. WHY??? Did the Director sleep with the Producer's wife? What happened? Something of this magnitude could not be a mistake, not with the vast sums of cash involved in the movie business This is a case of MOVIECIDE. Maybe someday we will find out what happened.

By the way, the movie was very good and I enjoyed it.

I, Robot
(2004)

Am I having a flashback?
When, I started watching this movie, I flashed to 'Independence day', as Smith crawled out of bed, Then, the foot chase were Smith, again a cop, runs after the robot seemed a whole like the beginning of 'Men in Black'. The special effects are a dead ripoff from the 'Matrix'. I am sure there are other bit and pieces from movies that I haven't bothered to see. How come when An African American male stars in a movie these days, he has to carry a gun. Think about it. Enough of the down side. The movie was entertaining and for once (thank God) there are no love scenes to mess up the action and adventure. If I want to see romance, I'll go to a chick flick. If I didn't see the other movies that I mentioned, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it a lot more, but what is, is. It won't be a blockbuster, but it will do a lot better than Smith's bomb, 'The Wild Wild West'. Should you go and pay to see this movie....yes. Enjoy this movie.

Kronos
(1957)

For 1957, the story is deep.
Recient edit: I notice that a lot of the sci-fi movies are being remade. This movie could be remade and with CGI and all the special effects available now, could become a major money maker for the studio that can take on this project. So many remakes have been made that are based on boring original movies and some have been a success, most have not. If any producer that reads this would just watch this movie, he / she would see the potential of this story and as long as the story is followed with the critical elements intact, this could be a success for everyone. ----------------------------------------------------------------- I downloaded this movie last week because I remembered it from when I was a kid and a friend just happened to mention that he had a copy, so I grabbed it. I really didn't either understand or care about the story as much as I enjoyed the 'neat stuff' when I was 7, but after watching it again, I was impressed with the story. A species in outer space has used up all it's energy resources and sends out these machines to roam the galaxy looking for planets with energy producing potential. The machines have the ability to absorb any and all power and convert it into matter, thus growing in size with each meal. The science here was right on, The opposite on E=mc2, or as mentioned in the movie, 'the other half of the equation'. Because of these little bits of physics, I now wonder if the movie was made for kids or adults, Stuff like that was way over our heads back then. If the Machine is successful in locating a suitable planet, it calls for more machines to finish the job. Of course the special effects are primitive, but they make the point. The stream of energy as it flows past the 3 scientists while they are standing on top of the giant, was right on the money. The way the robot closed itself up to absorb the blast of the A-bomb from the jet it magnetically pulled into itself, even the design of the machine, was very original and very cool. All, in all, This is a classic 50's sci-fi movie that should be seen at least once. Of course, at the end there is a moral message and it is: "They ran out of energy because they wasted all the resources and if we don't watch out, we could end up the same way". We never know just where it came from and there are no aliens, just the machine. How was the machine going to get home? Somebody needs to remake this movie, it would be a great movie with all the modern effects in our bag of tricks.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
(2004)

SPOILER--after seeing the movie a few times the little things make sense
In the scene where Professor Lupin is instructing the students on repelling the Bogget (shape shifter), its Harry Potter's turn to cast the ridiculous spell. The Bogget's power lies in the ability to assume the shape of the most feared object of the person's mind. Since Harry's fear is the Dementor, the Bogget changed into a Dementor. Harry is scared and can't throw the ridiculous spell, so prof Lupin stands in front of Harry. In doing so, he is now the focus of the Bogget and the fear that the professor is keeping deep inside is transformed by the Bogget. The fear? A full moon. Why? Because Professor Lupin is a Werewolf. You see this full moon picture again in the last part of the movie when the Professor, Harry, Sirus Black and crew are together at night on the hill. The full moon shines through the clouds and the Professor does his wolf thing.

2001: A Space Odyssey
(1968)

To those who thought it was boaring...
This is for those who think this movie is boring or dumb. First of all, you are more than likely under 30 years old

and have been bottle fed on video games and extreme computer

animation. To you, yes this is a slow boring film. The only books you have read are the ones that were forced

on you in school, because you don't have the time to enjoy

anything real. You are part of an artificial age that is

expanding exponentially, by the way, that means it's getting

out of hand. Your children will need intravenous drips of amphetamine to

see or feel anything. This movie, was made with large constructed sets and real

props, not the generated, digital drone you call movies

today. This movie was before Star Wars. In fact, the advances made

by this movie, enabled the movies of today. You don't go to see this movie for the explosions, or the 98

pound women that can beat up football player sized men or

the car chase. This movie has a story. This was a film that

you read the book first then went to see. Again, remember

Books? If you can't read or don't have any idea what this movie was

about, I suggest you watch it's sequel, 2010: The year we

made contact. It will answer a lot of the questions raised

in 2001.

Full Metal Jacket
(1987)

Unforgettable sights & smells
No matter how well a movie is made, there are certain things that I remember about Viet Nam that can never be brought to the people that have never been in war. All the war movies that I watched or all the training in Boot camp never prepared me for the fact that very few of the people, both us and them, that were killed in the jungle, were recovered in a timely fashion. The dead were left to rot until hostilities stopped. This usually was a long time, and the memories of what they looked liked and the smell, will never be forgotten. This to me brought home the real horror of what we where doing to them, and what they did to us. There are more descriptive memories I could write here, but this isn't the place.

The Gods Must Be Crazy
(1980)

A happy movie
This movie must have cost $1.98 to make. There are no special effects to speak of. Everybody in this movie is an unknown. So why do I LOVE this movie? All I can say is the whole time I was watching this, I had a smile on my face. The concept was then and even now, unique. You connect right away with the hero, and root him on to the end. I will not tell you what the film is about, because You must watch it with no preconceptions or political bias. Just go rent the tape or download it, and you will watch a really special movie.

Digimon: Digital Monsters
(1999)

Get a life!
First of all, and most important, these cartoon programs are made for KIDS. What the hell are video game addicts doing giving these cartoons all this negitive press? If you guys want to be critics, then comment on games that you go and pay good money for, like all those Mortal Combat games(which I think are products of 100's of hours of code writing and are at a level that 'Digimon & Pokemon' are not a part of). These shows are for 10 year olds and younger! Nobody says you are too old to enjoy them, just too old to get so uptight about them.

House on Haunted Hill
(1959)

Refreshing the memories
When I first watched the House on Haunted Hill, It was with my buddies at the neighborhood movie house. I was 8 years old. I just watched the movie again, now I'm 50. I remember that when I first watched the movie, the house looked much more terrifing, the head in the suitcase, the floating blind women and the skeleton at the acid vat, all evoked multiple screams from us and countless re-enactments in our treehouse. Now, it all looks pretty tame and with the doctor and wife plotting to kill...well, it isn't HORRIFING any more, just another murder mystery. Even though with all it's old special effects and Nora's endless blood chilling screams, It did bring back a 'house full' of memories that I will always hold dear. The remake of this movie, with all of it's new special effects and blinding color, should have been named something completely different, because the only thing these two movies have in common is the "Stay the night and get paid" story line. This movie goes in my "Classics" box with "The Blob,The Mysterians, The Angry red Planet, The H-man and many others that are my Time machine- back to when movies like these and a good imagination ,enabled us to have endless fun. Hollywood with all the computer generated special effects, takes this exercise in imagination away from us. Oh, well.....

Bijo to ekitai ningen
(1958)

When I saw it, the title was "The 'H' Man".
I am 50 yrs old now and I really think that this was one of the first movies that I remember and possibly the first movie period. It was a Saturday kid show at the local theater and after paying 12 RC cola bottle caps, I was in. To tell the truth, the movie scared the hell out of me! All the gang reviewed this flick over and over-scene after scene. It was GREAT! I haven't seen this movie in over 40 years now and if I where to watch it now, It wouldn't be as frightening as my memory has kept it, so If you ever get a chance to see this movie for the first time, watch out! You will be looking up to make sure there isn't anything above you every time you enter a dark room.
