Firefly
(2002)

Incredible show, really miss it
I hate science-fiction. I hate shows about space, I hate shows about technology, I hate shows about people with super-powers, I hate westerns too.

But I love Firefly. The one thing I look for in a show is the characters that are built and portrayed and have different feelings and motivations, characters that make you laugh, make you cry, that make it so you can't take your eyes off the screen to see what they're going to do next. Firefly has this more than ANY other show I have ever seen. By the end of the first episode I was already laughing at the antics of Wash and Jayne, feeling pity for Simon and impressed with his love for his younger sibling (which I identify with strongly), smiling at Kaylee with her positive attitude. It was a cast of characters that I really cared about. TV shows don't really make me cry, but the episode "Objects in Space" sure did. It's a show where not all problems are solved by blowing someone's head off or causing a gigantic explosion, which is something I like. No more clichés, no more aliens. And I could even forgive the Western parts of it, because it added a truly beautiful flair to the whole show.

I hope with all my heart that someday I can see new episodes of this group on television or elsewhere. This was a spectacular show, and this is coming from someone who hates 99% of everything she sees on television. Check it out and give it a chance, it has a little something for everyone.

Becker
(1998)

Hilarious, I love it
Becker is one of those shows that nobody's ever heard of. I certainly hadn't. A year ago I watched around 5 minutes of the show, then changed the channel and didn't think about it, until recently when I managed to watch the first season of the show. Now, I'm not the kind of person who likes sitcoms. I HATE them with a passion, so much that when one's on I will go into a Beckerish rant about hospital dramas, and the junk most writers try to vomit into our televisions. But this show is remarkably hilarious. What I like best about it is the lack of drama (at least not so far). There isn't glaring sexual tension between the main characters, and they don't spend episode after episode pining after each other trying to make people care. It's just funny. It's made to make you laugh, and it WILL make you laugh. That's it, no strings attached. If you're looking for laughs, watch this show. If you're looking for a deep and intricate drama, go watch some other dumb show.

Danson's delivery of his lines is spot on, and sometimes lines that wouldn't sound funny if you thought about them have you rolling on the floor. I can't wait to see future seasons of this show, I'm looking forward to it. This is the first sitcom I have been able to watch since I was twelve years old. The cast of characters is done perfectly. While I can't stand Bob, I love everyone else, they all have their own spin on everything to make an incredibly funny show.

Cyrano de Bergerac
(1990)

Incredible!
I hate poetry. I hate romance. I love this movie.

The thing that stood out the most to me was the attention to detail. It is obvious that the director and the actors worked tirelessly on this film in order to make it flawless, and wonderfully entertaining. After taking a class when I first saw it where I had to watch many French movies and discuss them, this is the only one I came out really enjoying and recommending others to watch.

I have not seen any other version of Cyrano, so I have nothing to compare it to but itself. Depardieu does an incredible job. He owned the part, he convinced me that he was Cyrano. It usually is apparent when watching actors that they are simply acting - they are not really "being" the character they're playing. I love watching Depardieu because he gets into the part, and you forget that anyone is acting at all.

This movie definitely ranks among my favorite movies of all time. It has a little bit of everything. It is hilarious, sad, happy, colorful, beautiful, ugly, and mesmerizing all at the same time. And this is the first French movie that even the guys in the class were able to admit that they enjoyed!
