Chalte Chalte
(1976)

Psychotic woman in case of mistaken identity (poss spoiler)
What attracted me to this film was the soundtrack which features the famous song "chalte chalte mere geet yaad rakna kabhi alvida na kehena" This where it all ends for this film though. This film fails to live up to any type of expectation. The story though interesting is shoddily handled. The heroine makes a mark with her westernised outfits eg the lime green bikini. which at the time were quite a bold move for any bollywood heroine. you can see that the filmmakers have attempted something unique but seemed to have missed the mark. Simmi Garewal plays the psychotic widow who mistakes a man who looks exactly like her late husband quite well. She seems to be the star of the show and the main hero who we might as well forget as wasn't seen in many movies after Chalte Chalte. All in all this film features a fantastic soundtrack an interesting story failed by poor direction and some very bad acting. quite as measly 4 out of 10

Woh 7 Din
(1983)

Entertaining enjoyable perfect sunday afternoon viewing
This Has to be one of Anil Kapoor's finer moments in bollywood. Being one of his earlier movies it is rarther quite good.. today's bollywood could learn a thing or two. The story centres around a love drama in which two lovers are torn apart and sacrifice their love for their circumstances.. Padmin Kolaphure plays the young and fiesty girl who has a thing for the new tennant living in the flat uptairs. thus follow a series of funny events as the girl attempt to attract Anil Kapoor.. A struggling Musician who hopes to make it big in bollywood. This film features some hillarious scenes and some very emotional moments. Naseer uddin shah plays the rich doctor who want to fullfill his dying mothers wish to see him married again after the loss of his wife. Thus begins the story where by Nasseer uddin shah vows to find his wife's lost love and unite them together. All in all which leads to a rarther questionable climax.. The view expressed in this film may be a bit too orthodox but the acting is brilliant and the soudtrack is excellent. A must for all to watch!

Kudrat
(1981)

Spooky film.....
This movie is an interesting past life chilling drama. Hema malini and Rajesh Khana play the part of lovers in their past life only to be reawaked by the Reincarnated Hema malini who unearths a dark secret. This film is not a full on horror flim its more of as supense murder mystery that will leave you really spooked. The film features a lovely soundrtack featuring some lovely romantic numbers. Hema Malini's performance is really very good.Raj kumar plays the evil protagonist whose actions form the basis for the drama Though this wasn't the scarriest film I have ever seen it sure did spook me out for the rest of the evening. Worth a Watch 9 out of 10.

Paap
(2003)

A unique visual experience.....
This film has a sort of small independent filmaker arthouse feeling to it. The story itself is quite simple and starts of with some very stunning visuals i the title song. Then begins the story with a violent murder. thus this is where Kaya(Udita Goswami) the budhist monk girl meets the dangerous dashing hollywood stlye cop(the Antonio Banderas of India-john abraham). After a gun battle in a dodgy carpark and a semi serious gunshot wound, begins the cop's escape from the corrupt and dangerous police force who want to protect their own backs! in the meantime Kaya is strugling with her love for shriven(the cop). The musical score is simply spectacular with earthy ethnic beats to match the spectacular locations where the film was shot! Some of the Scenes are simply stunning whereas a couple leave something to desire. on the whole a thouroughly enjoyable film that shows us that bollywood can be more than just mindless entertainment for the masses and that it sometimes has something of value to offer more films like this please bollywood needs them...

Disturbing......
This film about the plight of women in india is indeed deeply disturbing and angry.Shock value and ultra realism have been used to the max. The world needs to wake up and understand the plight of women in more conservative societies, and in general. The film has been well shot and the acting is of a high standard, though right from the scene where Madhuri dixit is shunned by all through to Rekhas brutal rape the film seems to leave a bad taste that sort of leaves you feeling very shaken up indeed. this film is not for the faint hearted or those who want as a close a look as they can at the plight of women in india. This movie wasn't enjoyable and I don't think it was meant to entertain even though there are some lighter moments in the film. I would give this a 7 out of 10. not bad not entirely brilliant either.

Janasheen
(2003)

awful stomach churning fare....
The famous Feroz khan used to be noted for his modern lavish productions that pushed the boudaries of indian cinema but sadly this film despite the slick promos falls flat on several occasions. What starts off as a poorly acted and insesitive film ends up being poor. Sadly the main fault in this film lies in its story that is a poor mish mash of poor D grade bollywood storylines, it has everything thrown in... murder, revenge love, action and of course the hoards of bikini clad women who really serve no purpose at all. without the bikinis the songs as just plain forgettable. The superbike championship was a nice innovative idea that tries but fails. this film is also choppy and bitty. scene's that do not seem to flow together.songs thrown in hap hazzardly. A very poor attempt by the man who brought us classics like "App jaisa koi" in Qurbani.

Pinjar: Beyond Boundaries...
(2003)

Breathtaking and deeply emotional saga...(keep a box of tissues handy though)
Pinjar is one of the few movies that really leaves a mark and makes you think hard. Set in Partition India, this film Shows the true reality of partition India. Urmila gets full marks for her beautiful and deeply emotional portrayal of a suffering woman with no way to go. Her freedom, personal identity and family respect taken away overnight over a tragic land dispute. Manoj bajpai is simply brilliant as her remorseful abductor. There several moments in the film where one is brought to tears. The film at points is deeply traumatic. Some of the partition scenes are spine chilling, yet Urmila's endurance and survival are both remarkable. From a woman robbed of her freedom to woman who gave freedom to women in similar situations. A remarkable film that should be given credit for intelligent characters and storytelling.

Kati Patang
(1970)

Spend a rainy afternoon with a cup of tea cookies & Kati Patang
This film is just the excuse for a lazy sunday afternoon. The story though a little old fashioned has been beautifuly presented with the centeral character played by Asha Parekh taking centre stage alongside Rajesh Khanna. The story centres around Asha Parekh who on the day of her wedding betrays her fathers wishes and runs away to her boyfriend only to find out that he has betrayed her and has found another woman. hurt and disillusioned the girl returns home to find her father dead due the shock of his daughters dissapearance. There is only one place left to go... her friends who is widdowed single mother on her way to meet her inlaws. sadly the there is an accident and Asha parek is left to play the role of the little childs mum and takes on the role of her friend. Enter in Rajesh khanna the man whom she would have been married to if she had not run away. This then becomes the beginnig of a beautiful love story between the two. the film features a lovely evergreen classic soundrack, a must watch film...

Koi... Mil Gaya
(2003)

A fanstastic attempt at something differnt
Unfortunatley, I'm not sure that the indina public are ready for such a film though. Especial where the hero plays a difficult role IE there is some real acting involved. Bollywood heartthrob Hritik Roshan usually seen in glamourised love storys and stories where the hero sweeps the hearts of the female watching public does role that really gives him a chance to do some propper acting. His role as the mentaly retarded boy is well done and the issue is sensitively handled. Preity Zinta looks abslolutely stunning throughout the film. The special effects used in the film are top notch. they dont look tacky or cheap. The film takes on several storylines from various hollywood sci-fi films and creates a story that could be classed as India's ET. The only drawback is the length of the film. Maybe bollywood needs to shorten it films. to two hours rarther than the exhaustive three which does not work with all storylines. What seems to drag mid first half suddenly picks up second half and gets really exciting second half. The alien "Jadoo" has been created quite well with eye movements and some basic hand manouvers. The space ship looks top notch just like the big hollywood blockbusters something out of star trek of starwars! The kids in the film are lovely and funny. Rekha gives a soulful performance as Hritik's mum. The soundrtack is quite unique and suits the film well. definately a good one to watch...

Die Another Day
(2002)

Has bond lost the plot?
Appart from Halle Berry's glamourous enterance which was a sort of recreation of Ursula Andress's epic enterance in Dr No. There was not alot that was tastefuly executed in this film. This film took james bond's usually unbelivable stunts and gadgets to stupid levels. Sadly there was nothing classy about this film except the decision to return to the aston martin which I have to say is true to the Bond franchise. Lost is the subtle pacing and classy action to give way to fast star wars style sci fi action fest wich really isn't in the true spirit of Bond. If they plan to continue making bond films they must not lose sight of what made the origial stories by Ian Fleming so Classy. Entertaining as it was this film just wasn't Bond.... shame really

Kaala Patthar
(1979)

A brilliant concept that works well in bits...
This film has an amazingly ambitious story for its time. a story about poorly treated coal mine workers and a deeply powerfull hero destined to a life of pain and suffering for his mistakes in his past. this film boasts some powerfull performances from Amithab Bachan and Shatrugan sinha. Rakhee plays the soulful doctor destined to help the unfortunate wherever they may be thus on of the most famous lines in bollywood history when Rakhee is trying help The injured Amithab. "please why dont you try uderstand" "Pain is my destiny doctor and I can't avoid it!" Shashi kapoor plays the Dashing young romantic engineer together with Parveen Bhabi the news reporter who plays his girlfriend in the film. The story works well on a whole though technically the film leaves a lot to be desired. Though the scenes in the coal mines are well done. The rest is a bit shoddy in places, but some brilliant acting is what takes this film beyond its rather dull appearance. This film comes with a soulful soundtrack that really works well and some fantastic songs to be rememderd forever... they just don't make stories like this anymore.....shame really

Andaaz
(2003)

A very well made film despite the worn out story....
If you think back to the golden era of bollywood, the stories were simple the drama suttle and the outcomes keeping in with the views of the people of the time. So take an old story made time and time again, the classic love triangle and give it an extremely modern twist and you have Andaaz. The style and the atmosphere has been handled extremely well. the feeling and the settings perfect. Take a very handsome Akshay Kumar and pair him with two of the mos beautiful women in the world. Lara Dutta & Priyaka chopra are simply stunning. The three work extremely well together. The sexuall chemistry is fantastic. The story though very well made unfortunately sinks a litte in the middle and you hit a low before it gets rounded up with a high yet one cant help feeling that the ending was a bit abrupt. alot of the middle section and bits in the begining could have been edited out, as bits of the film definatley look better than others and the film suffers a little at times. Ufortunately the old fashioned story does not fit too well with the highly modern outlook. All in all a very well made film with a story that could have been alot better...

Dharam Karam
(1975)

A surprise piece of shoddy work coming from RK films
RK films known for their slightly higher standard films does a rarther miserable job of this film. directed by Raj Kapoors son Rhandir Kapoor, the film suffers in alot of places. the editing is not up to scratch and the story is plain rubbish. The idea of doing good deeds rather than being lured to the dark side of life is potrayed poorly. Rekha whose fashion sense in the film is rarther questionable acts well but is nothing special. though there is one thing good and that is the soundtrack of the film. especially one all time classic....

Kaante
(2002)

Finally something a bit diecent hits the screens
Tired of the same old pretty song and dance sequences in pretty gardens and silly love stories and immature and unreal emotions and films that never hit that spot! This film has it all. Decent and very atmospheric cinematography. excellent editing and a some very fantastic acting. unfortunately, this film does have a few flaws and traditional bollywood style framework that stops this film from being just short of brilliant. The songs have been tastefully used in the film and are not just thrown in, but the film could have done without one or two. Three hours of film does not always work with alot of stories and this one seems to lose itself in the middle before picking up once again towards a brilliant ending(story being borrowed from hollywood)This film just goes to show what indian cinema could be if it wanted to, not just three hours of the same old song and dace but something new and interesting one in a while. A film worthy of some acclaim. all in all a good effort! 7 out of 10

Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love
(1996)

Kama Sutra??? hmmmm...
Beautiful sets that resemble a very westernised image of traditional india with its beautiful palaces, rich maharajas and beautiful exotic women. Ufortunately the film could have been called anything other than kama sutra a tale of love and it would'nt have mattered. as interesting and beautiful the film is, it is lacking. If you have ever read the Kama Sutra you will know that that this film, besides mentioning the text and recreating the age in which this text may have been written, has nothing to do with it. Anyone hoping to find soft porn may be surprised of even shocked that this film does not have lashings of sex or tasteless photoghraphy that is so common of porn films. This beautiful film should really not have been titled kama sutra.. not a bad film, yet nothing special

Star
(1982)

Brilliant soundtrack....good story...hmmmm...
This film features one of the hottest soundtracks of the eighties. Giving a distictive pop feel to the whole film, and features famous numbers by artists such as Nazia Hussain, with her famous BOOM BOOM number. The story is about a young and budding wannabee star and his strugle to get noticed. Kumar Gaurav's acting is not at its best at times and feels rather flat at times and story though interesting, lacks punch! The saving point is really the fantasic soundtrack and well picturised songs. If you can find the soundtrack buy it. The film, I'm not sure...

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...
(2001)

Awwww..Carry a whole box of tissues if your going to watch this...
Karan Johars next highly anticipated venture after kuch kuch hota hai features most of the same actors ie: Sharukh Kajol an Rani. Beautifully shot with gorgeous large sets and beautiful locations. This is where the film begins and ends. Though very well made the film lacks the most important element (a good story). Its a shame really as there really has been alot of effort put into everything else especially the tears which begin to flow uncontrolably throughout the film.. "DANGER" flood warning here. The best scene is the song shot in Egypt. Unfortunately college students in the UK are not all Gucci clad super models who drive flash cars and dance arround like arrogant fools. Not a totaly bad film, made watchable with its larger than life sets and beautiful direction. shame it was wasted on such a lame story,....

Hum Kisise Kum Naheen
(1977)

A true Bollywood classic
Nassir hussain does it again with lots of massala in a similar vein to his previous film yaadon ki baraat. Lots of exciting action and a soundtrack to die for. RD burman comes out tops once again and this film features my all time favourites "chand mera dil" & "kya huwaa mera vada" A truly entertaining film full of pure undiluted bollywood!

Sargam
(1979)

beautiful film....
A very beautiful and touching film about a deaf and dumb girl with a passion for indian classical dance. ufortunately her stepmother and step sister do not like her and treat her like an invalid. She meets an simple good hearted street musician who plays the dafli(hand drum).after his promises to her dying father make sure that she was happy. the story takes on several turns through several hardships faced between the two. Before he realises the love shared between them. The soundrack to this film is beautiful and combies the sound of the dafli(hand drum) and the ghungroo(ankle bells) beautifuly. especially in the song "dafli wale!" Its a shame that they dont make interesting films like these anymore...

Baton Baton Mein
(1979)

love over pots of tea....
This film has a lovely story that isn't your run of the mile bollywood over dramatised romeo & juliet style love story. The film itself is simple and unfortunately it shows. The film looks cheap in places and the direction is not at its best in times. The soundtrack is fantastic with lovey classic numbers such as baaton baaton me pyar ho jayega!" After several afternoon meeting with the heroine and her ever loving family. The hero comes to grips with the fact that his new best friend is actually the girl for him. it all ends very happy happy.. A good effort that is not bad. all in all a good watchable film

Asoka
(2001)

Fantastic attempt at an inteligent film...
When one thinks of bollywood films they think of dancing round trees melodious tunes and lots of family drama. This film offers alot more. The styling is very much a fusion of eastern splendour with tudor styling, which gives the film an excellent feel(which may not be very authentic, but works extremely well) The sligtly shakey if not confusing start soon builds itself into a film that is very modern slick yet very ancient in its apearance, which realy sets the tone of this film. The best perfomance has to be kareena kapoor's as the stunning kawraki. The story yet seemingly simple on the outside is actually very complex on the inside. The soundtrack is very modern yet uses alot of very earthy ancient and ethnic beats to creat an efect that is spelbounding. May not be totaly authentic and historicaly correct but, this film comes out tops. Please give us more movies like this one. brilliant 9 out of 10.

Devdas

Indian opulence at its best!
After seeing all the promos and hype surrounding the film. I was naturally curious to see what this film had to offer. I was left speechless. The sheer scale of the film is mind blowing. The flawless grandeur literaly draws you into the movie. What brings this film into the top league is the fact that you have quality performances to match the grandeur, which in my view is seldom seen in movies today. Sharukh Khan is gives a performance of a lifetime. One of his best to date. Ashwiriya Rai. steals the show as the deeply devoted and emotional Paro. Madhuri's portrayal of a courtesan who feels true love for the first time is heart stopping as is the ending which leaves your spellbound. A fantastic effort from Bollywood. A film to be truly proud of. Rent it buy it see it.

Khamoshi
(1969)

An excellent film....
A very interesting idea. this film speaks of class. A story about a nurse in a mental institution whose revolutionary treatment's side effects get unnoticed. After falling in love with her first patitent and never telling anyone her love goes unnoticed as her patient moves on and another patient who after being betrayed by his first love is left on the brink of madness, is brought in. After failed attempts, her treatment is again called for but this time with disastrous consequences. A sad yet very moving drama.... a must see with a beautiful soundtrack.

Prem Rog
(1982)

excellent film..
A very interesting film about some of the not so nice traditional customs relating to caste and culture practised in parts of India. This film features some of the most beautiful song picturisation I have ever seen. The song in the tulip farms is a must to see. It brings alive the the passion and the love. The ending may have been a bit over the top, but this movie has an important social message. All in all a very good film...
