Jeux d'enfants
(2003)

Life is a game
"Jeux d'enfants" tells us the friendship&love story of Julien and Sophie (Guillaume Canet and Marion Cotillard who are fantastic) since their childhood.

"Jeux d'enfants" tells what makes the childhood wonderful : freedom, innocence, imagination, unconditional love... Instead of facing their (terrible) problems in life, young Julien and Sophie choose to create a game and make bets that are more and more daring, crazy...and funny. They grow up and game continues. Until when?

This movie is a fantasy about escape, about the will to play, and then not being unhappy, at any cost. In the movie Julien told us that this game is his drug and this fairy tale, from its beginning to its wonderful and touching ending, is also about this dependency .

Beginning is disconcerting as only a few french movies offers such original style and effects. But it quickly became a delight. When seeing it, we often think of Tim Burton and movies like "Peter Pan" and "Mary Poppins". Actually, it is absolutely not an "only for french" movie. I hope this movie will have a great international career because it really deserves it. 8.5/10

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
(2003)

a dull movie
In many ways, `Sinbad' really looks like `Prince of Egypt' and `Road to Eldorado' Technically, the graphical choices are the same and we can admire the great improvements done since `Prince of Egypt'. The plot is also based on a friendship story between two different people who must face their differences and their responsibilities. John Logan has made a solid story which help to keep our attention during the entire movie. Unfortunately, after a good beginning, Sinbad is a so-so movie due to a poor direction, a lack of rhythm and hideous monsters. It's quite a shame because make an cartoon adaptation of Sinbad was a good idea. It seems that the formula of Katzenberg initiated while he was working for Disney became old and it's time to make more daring animated movies as the Japanese cartoonists do because the quality of animated movies (except the computer generated movies) is decreasing. 5/10

Hulk
(2003)

The vision of Ang Lee
I didn't find Hulk so well. Story is not so deep even if the movie is quite long. This is not necessarily bad to spend time to settle characters and story but here, it's sometimes boring. Actually Hulk takes a long time before really starting whereas the ending is quite expeditious and the final battle is a great disappointment. Acting is okay but not amazing except Nick Nolte whose way of playing is in osmosis with his character in the movie.

The most interesting in the movie, and which seems to me very positive, is that we get the vision of an author : Ang Lee. He gives us how he see the Hulk and his story. Despite i think a lot of obligations and difficulties linked to the adaptation of comic books, Lee seemed to have a great freedom to make this movie. He tried many things, imposed his style and has made action scenes which are sometimes great and not set like a movie clip. Finally, i didn't really like the movie but i truly respect the work of Ang Lee as he didn't made a formated movie. 5/10.

Filles uniques
(2003)

Pierre Jolivet at his very best
"Filles uniques" is a french movie that tell us the meeting of two women, a judge and a shoes shoplifter and their unlikely friendship. With this simple start, Pierre Jolivet describe with high accuracy some of the problems of these women like for example the relations between Carole and her husband (wonderful Vincent Lindon). The movie is also a comedy and this is a fine one with funny situations and dialogs thanks notably to the talent of the two main actresses, Sylvie Testud and Sandrine Kibelain who are both wonderful, as usual i could say. The first part of the movie is excellent : funny and clever. The sequence in Annecy is a little less interesting but still okay. Despite this, i highly recommend to see "Filles uniques" and all the movies of Pierre Jolivet which has never disappointed me.

Creature
(1985)

A boring "remake" of alien
"Creature" is an ersatz of "Alien". It is not a problem if the movie is good but this one is quite uninteresting. All scenes, some of them scrupulously copy scenes from alien or aliens (Diane Salinger seems to make tremendous efforts to look like Sigourney Weaver), are predictable and filmed without any style. So this movie, even if it is coherent with fair special effects, only brings boredom. Only the appearance of Klaus Kinski can arouse our interest. It's few. 3/10
