Love & Debt
(2019)

Pretty good but was missing something.
Maybe that something missing is continuity. I love movies from the late 1930's through the 1960's. The movies told a story. This movie gets the point across but in weird scenes without much continuity. It doesn't really tell the story well but relies on short scenes without any depth but a lot of shouting. I like some warmth and not so many bizarre characters. The main characters utter a bunch of four letter words. A very dysfunctional family. I can curse with the best of them but dropping the F bomb multiple times adds nothing to the story. We know the family is angry about their situation. There are some comedic touches that are dumb and detract from the main theme. This would be a great drama without the goofy comedy. Being in debt is no laughing matter. I remember being low on funds when I was younger and rolling pennies for enough money to buy food. Fortunately I was able to find work.

Beware, My Lovely
(1952)

Early Noir
I believe it was mentioned at the very beginning that the movie was set in 1918. Take a look at the scenery and automobiles.

I always considered noir to be mid 1940's through mid 1950's. So maybe this would be considered a melodrama if it takes place in 1918.

The movie deals with mental illness and can be very intense. The acting is top notch and worthy of 10 stars but I thought the movie overall was a bit uneven at times.

Having pictures scattered around of Ida Lupino's late husband were photos of William Talman which was a nice touch. I thought the ending was a bit rushed but overall the acting from Lupino and Ryan was great.

Juvenile Jungle
(1958)

Duke went straight
The movie isn't half bad for a B picture. The acting was generally above average and I can deal with a little over the top acting and corny dialogue. The "teenage" delinquents were more in their 20's and 30's. The pacing was good and the movie came in in a little over one hour. Robert Conrad and William Schallert are both listed in the credits but I didn't spot them. The big surprise for me was Joe Conley as Duke who ended up later playing Ike Godsey on The Waltons. A few of the cast members made guest appearances on Perry Mason. I liked Corey Allen and Anne Whitfield. I have 25 characters left so I will now close out.

Route 66: The Mud Nest
(1961)
Episode 7, Season 2

Baltimore when I was young
I remember as a kid of 12 hearing about this episode being filmed in and around Baltimore. I was living in Baltimore County at the time. As I got older I worked several jobs in Baltimore City and I visited many of the locations filmed in this episode. Mount Vernon Place especially. The last ten minutes of this episode is very well done. It is sad to meet someone that you would hope could be your mother, someone who turned her life around. You hope she would be the long lost mother that Buz never met. It was said with a quiet embrace and a kiss on the forehead from two strangers that will probably never meet again. It doesn't exactly offer any closure but it allows two lonely strangers to communicate on a very deep level. A very touching ending to a great episode.

One Step Beyond: If You See Sally
(1960)
Episode 5, Season 3

Great episode
I like everything about this episode. The grieving family is believable. George Mitchell and Anne Whitfield give outstanding performances The entire cast is perfect. I have not been able to find a decent copy but you can find this episode online. Be aware that the dvd's advertised will not have every episode of the series. It is sad that this episode is missing. I am not going to give away the plot because it should be experienced. I feel that the copy I found was shortened by about three minutes and I sort of wonder what could have been left out. Even a shortened version is still great to watch.

Return to Mayberry
(1986)

a bit of nostalgia and not bad
I saw this about 3 times and a few things bothered me. Everyone was so surprised to see Andy again, don't you think Andy would have kept in touch during those 20 years? As much as I liked Helen Crump, I think Charlene Darling would have made a much more interesting love interest for Andy. I realize that could never be. And Charlene was very cute. When Andy and Opie leave Opie's office they failed to say goodbye to the receptionist. Isn't that sort of rude? Was this actress Andy's wife in reality? It was great to see most of the old cast reunited. Most of them are no longer with us. Hard to believe it has been 27 years since this was first aired. Time marches on. There will never be a program of this quality again. We are living in different times.

Freaks and Geeks
(1999)

I was almost there
I was a generation away from these kids, having graduated in 1968, but I loved the show. So I related to the teens and the parents.

Things had not changed in 30 years. Same peer pressures same problems. It almost made me want to go back in time and change my behavior as a teen. I was definitely a geek.

What is really awful is that network television let this show pass after only 18 episodes. This is why I rarely watch television anymore. Many of the quality programs are never given a chance. Television is all about selling products and not so much about selling a program.

If there is any poetic justice it is that enough of the actors were appreciated and have not disappeared from the scene.

Standing in the Shadows of Motown
(2002)

the live performances ruin a perfect documentary
This film would deserve a perfect 10 rating were it not for the live performances of performers not worthy to be on the same stage as the Funk Brothers.

Was Martha Reeves the only Motown performer available for the documentary? Where was Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross or the Four Tops?

This film could have been so much better if it were more of a collaboration of the Funk Brothers and some of the Motown artists.

The conversations from the bonus material are great. If I were an editor I would take all the Funk Brother bonus material, eliminate the live performances, (except when the Funk Brothers are performing as the Funk Brothers) and add the bonus material to the film.

I did not like the dramatizations with actors. If the performer is deceased let them rest in peace. Do not recreate a scene because it was worthy of mention in the film.

It is a shame James Jamerson, Robert White and Benny Benjamin were all gone when the film was released. At least Robert White had a chance to add some of his insight. I think the Robert White interviews were my favorite part of the film. I really admire this man.

I am glad this film is in my collection but it could have been so much better.

Diner
(1982)

I was there
I was born and raised in Baltimore, I know of these people.

The character who is seen selling clothing from the trunk of his car is actually a Diner guy. He wrote a book and in this book I discovered one of the Diner guys was in my carpool at work.

In 1959 I was 9 years old, but from going with my mother to several of her bowling leagues (duckpins that is), I discovered several of the Diner guys were probably working in the bowling lanes between 1959 - 1963 when I was going with mom.

Things changes as I grew older. The diner is still there but is now a liquor store.

I love this movie because it is true to life and the actors are truly like the guys I remember from my youth.

It took me several viewings to accept the film and I own a copy now.

The Search
(1948)

perfect in every way
I have never seen a more perfect film as this little gem. There is really nothing else to say except everyone on the planet should own a copy of this film. If you care at all about humanity. If you believe in the human spirit, you owe it to yourself to watch this film. It is quiet and understated. The violence of war is over for the moment so we see the survivors. This is not a happy time but there will be happier times to come. Believe me. It seems to be so easy to lose someone in all this turmoil. I am a grownup person, in my mid 50's, take pride in being a macho man and I found myself bawling like a baby during some of the intensely emotional scenes. This film is not to be missed. Montgomery Clift and Wendall Corey are both excellent yet it is the child who is the star of this movie. Everything is perfect in this film from beginning to end.

Kiss Me Deadly
(1955)

Great 1950's Noir
I used to see this film on television late at night and I thought it was incredibly bizarre the first time I viewed it.

After the third or fourth viewing I was hooked and then it was no longer shown on my local television station.

With the advent of video and cable television (mainly Turner Classic Movies) I now own a copy on VHS and DVD but I still tune in whenever it appears on cable TV.

In my opinion this movie deserves 10 stars. A mood is set from the very beginning and the mood continues to the very end. It is unrelenting, extremely violent and surreal.

Now that I own the DVD I can actually now watch the original ending that was always cut or shortened for television.

I will not go into the plot because there are six pages of comments, I just wanted to add that it is one of my top 5 favorite movies.

Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey
(1993)

Clara Rockman? Who is she?
Underfire apparently did see this documentary but does not remember Clara Rockmore's name. Yes, Brian Wilson was annoying and rambled too long. Maybe a psychological study of excessive partying and drug abuse would make for another documentary on rock stars. Seeing Professor Theremin was richly rewarding to me. Clara Rockmore was wonderful to watch. Her mastery of the Theremin is amazing. It took me awhile to make up my mind but I purchased the DVD and I'm glad I did.

City Lights
(1931)

Superb, touching, masterpiece
There is not much more I can say that has not already been said. This is one of the best films ever made and I would rate it 10/10. What moves me the most is that the little tramp is the essence of decency. The fact that he is a tramp does not make him lazy or not trustworthy. There is a subtle message here about giving of yourself, sacrifice and kindness. I also think the true meaning of love is expressed very well in the relationship between the blind girl and the tramp. And the saddest thing is that even though she will find out he is her benefactor, there is the probability that any true relationship between them is doomed once she has her sight. Could you allow yourself to offer someone the gift of sight knowing as the tramp does that it will end your relationship forever? This is the true meaning of love and giving. I think this film should be required viewing for everyone. You will never ever forget the last 5 minutes of this movie. Great.

Marty
(1955)

Great, Touching and Timeless
I love movies of the 1950's and this is a prime example of the quality today's movies seem to lack.

Being Italian myself I can relate to Marty's situation. Marty's mother and aunt are aging widows and Italian families are extremely close. Sadly, Marty's mother any aunt are feeling old and useless and in many ways try to sabotage their son's happiness. This is sad but true speaking as a bachelor myself. At one point your mother asks you, when are you ever going to get married and when they are older they want to live with you because they too are lonely.

I found myself deeply moved by the decency of Marty and the young teacher he meets at a singles dance. These are truly special people that life has passed by, but not for long. They discover each other and Marty calls the girl in spite of the reservations of his mother and friends.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Marty and his young lady are the truly beautiful people in this poignant love story.

I would rate this movie 50 stars if I could.

Wonderful, funny at times and unforgettable.

A must see and a must have in any movie collection.

The Bad Seed
(1956)

Very Theatrical
This broadway theatrical production does not transfer well to the screen. I found it too talky. Nancy Kelly overacts more than William Shatner has ever done. Some of the other performers turn in credible performances, I liked Henry Jones. I find the entire production is over the top from start to finish. Kelly's performance is good for a laugh or two, however, the subject matter of the film is not very funny. I would buy the video just to have this unique movie in my collection. There are no other films of this era quite like the Bad Seed.
