Kyle XY
(2006)

Everybody can learn something GOOD from Kyle XY.
I like TV and I fit in that choice demographic of females between 18-45 who are always looking for something or someone to watch.

I downloaded the pilot. Watched it expecting to be introduced to Kyle. Didn't know what to expect storywise except for a mystery about his missing belly-button. Got that and so much more. *big smiles* Look for the good and you'll find it, as mom used to say.

Seven weeks and episodes later, I've kept up. Each episode thus far has presented a positive message or a valuable life lesson while keeping my attention and making me laugh. They're not afraid to show that *all* actions have consequences unlike the majority of the fluff on TV. These characters become more likable as they learn from their mistakes and grow.

This show is worth watching it with your children, your teens, even just your spouse. Mine watches it with me every week. We like it. Even people without immediate family can enjoy this show.

I'm glad this show exists and been renewed for a 2nd Season. I hope there are lots of extra features if there's a DVD.

And now for some well-earned downtime. =)

Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye
(2002)

The Eyes have it.
Sue Thomas FBEye is a fascinating show for several reasons: It's FBI drama. (That's always fascinating.) It's got a team setting with often humorous character interaction. It's got a female lead character with special abilities based neither in science fiction nor plastic surgery. ASL is an awesome and complex language. To be able to effectively use it on TV so that hearing viewers can relate to what's going on is a great achievement. Based on real life stories, the female lead seems like a nice lady who'd make a great friend to anybody. There's a hearing-ear dog! (I'm no Lassie fan, but I like Levi.) Great show! Can't wait for the DVD!

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai
(2000)

Better than I thought it would be.
My friend and I like musicals. She convinced me to try one from India but I didn't really know what to expect. We watched Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and liked it even though some parts are cheesy. The music and dancing were good overall. The guy's character was handsome and a good singer and the girl's character was...kinda annoying really but she improved a bit as the movie went on.

If you're looking for a classic Rogers and Hammerstein, this isn't it. If you want something a little different, go for it. It's better than you might think. Now if only I could get the soundtrack out of my head.;)

Daredevil
(2003)

Batman without the cape.
I just saw the opening night showing with my sweetheart. We were both looking forward to this movie since the first preview. This movie is a lot deeper than other reviews might make it seem.

Most people watch comic book hero movies for the action, and there was plenty of that and it was fun to watch and even thrilling at points, but what I really got into was the depth of the inner characters. Ben Affleck did a wonderful job in his role. He made his character sufficiently believable (for a comic book hero) enough that you really sympathized with his inner frustrations.

I saw a lot of plot in this movie, man vs self, man vs man, good vs evil, good trying to make sure he's still good, and I liked it. If Jennifer Garner's role was to be male eye-candy she did her job well. Perhaps if I hadn't been looking for more of the Alias character to come out on the screen, I could have better focused on the fact that this isn't Alias and wasn't supposed to be.

The Irish hitman was very well done, considering he played a sociopath that provided most of the "well-aimed" humor, even if it was a bit twisted. Funny how you can see Colin Farrell as the title role in The Recruit, as well as the lead in the upcoming, Phonebooth.

Joe Pantoliano has a great role as the reporter who has discovered the identity of our hero and must decide whether to expose Daredevil, thus furthering his own career, or to keep the masked man's identity a secret and promote him as a good guy. Well done.

If you don't like comic book psychology, you won't like this movie. If you do like it, you'll love it as well as the character interaction betwen Affleck and Garner. Mesmerizing.

I don't worship Ben Affleck but his appeal has increased quite a bit. I think I'll go see it again. I wouldn't mind a sequel. It took guts to take on those roles.

Shanghai Knights
(2003)

Uno mas!
Please see Shanghai Noon one more time before you see Shanghai Knights or half of the jokes won't make much sense and just look stupid. The plot can more or less hold its own, but lots of the former jokes are re-visited with slightly different twists and if you haven't seen the first movie, it'll look crass and unnecessary. If you've seen the first movie and liked it, you might get quite a kick out of this one, especially for the group fight scenes. Roy O'Bannon and the Shanghai Kid make a very interesting team, with the Shanghai Kid doing all the dirty work and Roy taking most of the credit. It was better as a Western.

Entertaining as a rental or matinee, but don't pay full price for this movie.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
(2001)

One director to rule them all...
If Peter Jackson ever makes any more fantasy movies, I'll go see them just because of what he did with Lord of the Rings. He has well established himself as a director worthy of his craft. I was so impressed with Lord of the Rings that I was persuaded to buy the book, something I do not often do after a theatrical viewing.

I'm glad he cut what he cut and made the decisions he made. It took guts to be able to stick to the meat of the plot and not go into all the unnecessary details that might have been nice, but completely unrelated to the plot. This movie is so thick with plot you can stir it and have it leave trails. Renowned Hobbit chefs would understand that terminology.

How many words of praise can be directed towards this film? Superb, enchanting, intoxicating, splendid, marvelous, awe-inspiring, history in the making. I don't think anyone else could have done it as well. His choice of actors, crew, effects, WOW! The man's a genius!!!

Everwood
(2002)

Ever Awesome!!!
Our family watches a lot of TV, but we pick out the best from the rest to watch together as a family and we don't miss Everwood. We love the various themes, most especially that major inner-healing occurs on this show through service towards one's fellow being. We'd rather watch this show than many of the classless shows geared away from healthy family values and community spirit in these troubled times.

Everwood deals with real issues, situations that people do actually come in contact with, instead of multifarious inane stunts. The character interaction is superb! There are very profound depths to the writing. They've found a way to discuss a range of family-based topics that's unmatched in its sensitivity and realism.

If they put this show on DVD, it's mine! I'm tempted to record over all my Buffy tapes with Everwood episodes. It's one of the few shows on TV that's family-promoting.

Strictly Ballroom
(1992)

Strictly EXCELLENT!
For everyone who loves dance and creativity, this movie is spectacular. Great performances and oh so yummy dance sequences make this movie one very well worth watching!

I'd really never watched Aussie film before this movie, but because of it, I'm now a big Aussie film fan. My eyes light up whenever I see this movie. The dance costumes are jaw-drop stunning and the story itself is really sweet.

I was so happy to find the video, and the soundtrack and now I'm going for the DVD.

You've GOT to GET this MOVIE!!

The Secret of NIMH
(1982)

I've always wanted a sparkly of my very own...
This movie is an absolute animation classic. It's smart, cute, sweet, hilarious, and absolutely worth whatever is necessary to own a copy. Justin was always my favorite character, being the brave good hero-rat that he is. Mrs. Brisby is a wonderful example of a very hard-working mom who really loves her kids. Jeremy is a TOTAL RIOT! Even 20 years after the movie was made and having seen it about 30 times, I still continue to totally enjoy it.

This movie is very VERY quotable and excellent as a very well-animated learning experience for young children. Highly recommended.

Girl, Interrupted
(1999)

Frankly, I thought that was good.
I saw this film for the first time last weekend. I did a lot of reading of what others thought before I saw it. With all the ads I had seen before, I really only wanted to see it for a minor character's part. Travis Fine was amazing as John. Remember, he was the really cute orderly who changed Susannah's light bulb just to be nice? Anyway, while I enjoyed the rest of the movie, honestly, I thought that way-too-short scene was the best part of it followed by the "Downtown" sequence.

The rest of the film (if you haven't ever SEEN the other movies it is compared to) is quite interesting. Lots of flashbacks, slick dialogue and wonderfully quotable quotes make this film well worth the watching.

Good show! Way to go!

The Others
(1997)

Bought it just to see...not bad.
Those of you who remember The Young Riders will be quite excited by this Travis Fine film, especially if you get the DVD which contains an introduction by him as well as a full length commentary track. (OK, I admit that's why I bought it.) Low-budget or not, it's like watching another great 80's teen movie, which was the general idea in the first place. Plot themes: Would-be rock star in band has serious crush on most popular girl in school and is shy about making a move. Changes also take place when an eccentric artist is pursued by a seemingly normal guy with artistic tastes very similar to hers. And then there are also the guys who just have no clue what they want to do.

Go ahead! Watch it! Don't judge it by it's exterior artwork. It's much better than that!

The Next Karate Kid
(1994)

The sun is warm, the grass is green...
I've seen this movie more than once and it's worth it. For those of you who like martial arts and overcoming internal conflict, this is a worthy choice. After seeing this movie, I wanted to be a more productive member of society because I could relate to the inner turmoil of a girl looking for acceptance and needing a path to follow. Of course, Mr. Miyagi always provides his sage advice. 2 thumbs up!

The Young Riders
(1989)

Absolutely Awesome!
It was my favorite TV show in the whole world for the 3 seasons it actually ran and has remained a happily videotaped memory for another 10 years afterwards. They just don't make Western series that good anymore. I could never get enough of it. If it ever comes out as a boxed-set on video or DVD, I'll be the first one in line to buy it.

The Night Train to Kathmandu
(1988)

Very cool
Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen this movie. The pieces of it that I still remember were good enough that I'm thinking of buying it. It's time to see it again and re-live the magic.

Nutcracker
(1986)

This one wins.
Of all the productions of the Nutcracker I've seen, this one would win my vote for best picture out of the batch. It's very well focused with regards to the actual storyline. Good thing I taped it while I had the chance.
