The Diplomat
(2023)

"The new West Wing"?! What were you drinking?!
Let me just start this off by saying that maybe the problem was in the way this was sold: the heir to the throne of the great political dramas West Wing and House of Cards.

What a let down, particularly with the pilot episode. The show has zero subtlety, the plots are simple minded and far fetched at the same time and it just wants to do everything, everywhere all at once. We end up with a poorly written mix of 24, Grey's Anatomy and Designated Survivor.

The relationships aren't believable (although the actors do their very best to make them so), the political plotlines aren't believable, all of it is flimsy as hell.

Of course it has that addictive nature that I believe stems from how the episodes are built and how good the actor are, but, much like poor crack, you're doing it while feeling bad about it.

Summing it up, it's a wannabe attempt at recreating something that has already been done far too better.

Gave it 6 because the acting is in fact quite good in most cases. But just that.

Snow White and the Huntsman
(2012)

What a bad bad movie...
First of all I'm giving it a 5 star rating for two main reasons: Charlize and The Queen. That being said, this movie disappointed me in so many ways I'm not even sure where to begin...

It started off kind of okay, great visuals, nice atmosphere, it was progressing quite fine actually. And then she breaks free and all hell breaks loose! From her near acrobatic skills (sliding into the sewer tunnel was almost like Jackie Chan) to her mad riding skills given the fact that she'd been kept in a cell almost all of her life, her crazy endurance and don't even get me started about those final scenes: a full suit of plated armor weighs at least 20kgs, if you add the shield and the sword, how the hell does a teenage skinny girl run up endless flights of stairs and doesn't even break a sweat? Come on dudes...

I think the beginning of the end was when that lovable dwarf decides in a couple of seconds that she is of royal blood and is the "chosen one". Every time people start throwing around the words "chosen one" I get the feeling that they were like "ok, I've run out of ideas, let's just call her the chosen one and call it a day". It could have been a good movie, but you ruined it writers. Nice job.

I won't even get into the fact that Kristen has about one or two facial expressions and doesn't seem to grasp when to use each of them, or the fact that her gladiator-style motivation speech was so abstract and metaphorical that half of the warriors wouldn't have grasped it, or that she keeps drifting off to the side in dumb wonder at the world... bah, I'm bummed. I wasn't expecting a great movie, but this was really bad.

Modern Family
(2009)

Simply a great great show
Everybody is saying that Modern Family may be a good runner up to Arrested Development. Well I disagree. And that's the beauty of having an opinion. This show is simply one of the greatest comedies I have ever seen! The characters are great, their chemistry on screen is amazing and the situations they create are just too laughable. Also, I find the dialogs brilliant and the awkward silences even better! And the quasi-Grey's Anatomy conclusions to every episode brings a real life feel to the show, which is where I think it diverts from A.D.. It has a meaning, while being outrageously funny.

For me a 10 out of 10.

Twilight
(2008)

What a disappointment...
I'm sorry but I've decided to be quite merciless regarding this movie. I have, once more, committed the mistake of reading the book first... and I do believe it couldn't have been a worse experience watching the movie. I mean where do I start??? The ONLY well cast actors were Bella and her father, perhaps her mother... the rest of them all sucked tremendously. The Cullen family (maybe with the exception of an OK Alice) all were bad actors and the most exposed of the lot, Eddie "Diggory" Cullen, was the worst! They were supposed to be a ridiculously beautiful bunch, which they weren't, not even Rosalie (well maybe Alice was cute), and, homossexualities aside, especially not Edward. OK, this could have been a hard movie to cast actors for (although I've seen harder ones), but I expect the actors to at least deliver... which they did not.

The story of course was stupid. The book's plot was already obvious, but they had to smack movie-goers in the face with the story didn't they? "OH pay attention to the following scene cause it will explain the whole movie while they are jumping from tree to tree WHICH THEY DIDN'T DO IN THE BOOK!". I'm all pro-adaptations when writing scripts that are based on books: books have a narrator, movies have er.... images! So of course some steps should be taken to adapt them... but changing the entire story?? Stuffing scenes like you would a turkey and changing sceneries just... because?? The school was not as described, the prom was not in the school, the Cullen house could have won a nouveau art award instead of being the classical house it was described as, there was no chase, there was no suspense, there was no sexual crescendo between them, there was nothing!

On a final note: this was an "MTV" movie. What do I mean about that? It was an easy-to-watch, quick-to-digest, detail-spurting flick that just corrupted the quite nice book that is Twilight just for the fun of satisfying the legions of teenage girls that love Evanescence and Paramore. I'm surprised the author didn't sue the lot! I was really excited about this one... what a disappointment...

The Mentalist
(2008)

Definitely not a Copycat
I honestly say that the first I heard of this show I thought the premise was too simple and too recurrent. However I seem to find myself waiting impatiently for each week's episode and what is Patrick going to pull this time!

Also, I'm sick and tired of all the comparisons with Psych and House and whatever you may come up with! This show is NOT House, it's NOT Psych, it has a clear identity and is surely not a copycat. Sure it has similar elements: the House-like vibe of the background music and types of situations, or the Psych-like fact that the main character can spot details with one look; but what show these days doesn't? I mean, all CSI variants are the same! Come on...

So I tell you: this is a very good show, it can still pick up some pace (at least I can see that they're taking advantage of the Anime-style fillers) but every episode is fun to watch and grips you to the last minute.

The main character was what surprised me the most though. Despite the fact that being Portuguese I enjoy that the lead detective is called Lisbon, Mr Patrick Jane seemed just another pretty face on TV. However I can now see that I was terribly wrong: it is a great character and is portrayed by a very good actor; the changes between whimsical smiles and disturbing stares are... well disturbingly good!

So watch it, it's worth it and you might learn a thing or two!
