Captain Phillips
(2013)

Get a first hand experience of getting kidnapped!!!
That is what Paul and Tom give you. Not just a movie, but an experience. As it should be, the film doesn't waste time and takes one straight into the life of Capt. Rich Philips, who is a little fed-up of all the travelling and sailing. Throughout the movie we are getting a close view of Rich and his experiences. When he has doubts and concerns so do we. When he is helpless and afraid, we feel it. When blood splatters on him we want to wipe our face and when he is in shock and relieved we have confused emotions too.

Barry does a great job of capturing the seas and the mighty ships. But the claustrophobic shots of the life-boat in the darkness is the highlight. The screenplay keeps even the easily distracted audience, engaged. It might seem a little stretched in the second half, but that is the reality of the situation.

One cant pull out such a film without an actor like Tom Hanks. In-fact after watching the movie I couldn't think of any other actor who could have been cast. He does another Oscar worthy performance by expressing subtle emotions with such class that we forget that we are watching the actor. And the there is the climax scene in which there's an outburst of varied emotions and it shows why Tom is a great actor.

Watch it for Tom, watch it for Paul, watch it to get some reality into the modern piracy and the lives of a ship crew. Watch it if you will appreciate a great movie-experience.

Vicky Donor

A great quality 'sperrrm'...errr.... movie!!!
Some trailers makes me want to go to the theaters the first day; some trailers, I don't want to watch even the trailer completely.

With VD, I was not sure. So I went anyways. Thank God I did. From the first scene to the last, it was worth it.

A great script dealing with masturbation indirectly yet without any vulgarity in words or scenes. It will easily pass off as a 'modern' family entertainer. It is not easy to bring out the film in such a great script and kudos to the director and editors for sending out a altogether new message and getting it out from the actors.

All the actors were spot on. But a special mention to the mom and her in-law, and their on screen chemistry. The leads have also done well, but Annu kapoor is the class act. Then final scene in which he breaks- down laughing, makes him in the list of my great actors in India.

No unnecessary songs, long shots, close-ups, drama etc,. it was all just about perfect. There were some pit falls on the acting in some scenes of Anshuman and Yaani, but come'on the made up for it later.

All together a great movie, coming in the times of Kahaani, Paan Singh Tomar etc,. only shows that this might be India's turn to its greatest star ever- The Script.

Rush and watch!!!

7th sense. Sensible idea, Sensible message. But Senseless execution
I expected an 'epic period' movie with a 'difference'. And,into the first 20mins,I thought it was. The periodical take with some good action and acting, is the only 'great' part in the movie. From then on when it enters the current period, it started to disappoint.

Indian directors still feel 'safe' only when there is unnecessary romance, irritating songs and useless characterization. There is absolutely zero chemistry between Surya ans Shruthi. They are not to be blamed. It was not needed and it goes nowhere.

Harris attempts to kill the film with loud songs which irritates the viewer. And the BGM is freaky and too loud. It would have been better music-less. The screenplay could have been better with an understanding that the audience do have a sense of intelligence. Where's the need to show the arch reading "museum museum" every time they enter one. We will know by the look of it. The villain's hypnotizing looks are used too far,to point where it gets dumb. Some CGI scenes really lack quality.

There are a few good things to look out for. The message which is really novel and striking, Surya's and Nguyen's acting, the initial prelude and some fight sequences. But if you have watched decent movies, you will definitely cry for a proper editing in the movie. Even when I know nothing about it, I honestly thought I could have done the editing job better. It made me feel that way.

A lot of potential wasted because of the need to commercialize it.So sad to see an excellent plot being beaten-up like this.

A Perfect World
(1993)

can be the most under-rated film....ever....
Writing this comment,I still have not got over the film yet. An excellent piece of acting from Costner and the kid,and the rest of the kudos to Clint Eastwood. Though Clint's on-screen presence is not that much, wherever he is,he's great. And Laura did her part too, though it wasn't much.Best of all the innocence of the boy buzz and Butch's way of relating his life with the boy is the strongest part of the movie.I felt a bit teary with the ending, though I expected it,maybe Costner did it so good.

Just go ahead and watch it,that will do a lot more good. This can be Clint's sweetest movie-ever.

JUST watch it.

Network
(1976)

Funny,True,Scarry....and like wine, it becomes better by the day
Well,if you want to watch a movie which will give you goose bumps, watch this.

As the title goes it is about the Television Network, and it's influence. But it's not only abut the TV,it's everything we see around us,it's about this world and us 'Humans or humanoids' as it points out. It was a daring movie in the 70s,but even in 2008 it cannot be more relevant,as it will be in 2020 and so on...The corporate control of this world has always been felt, and as one of the characters points out "The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business. The world is a business".So true isn't? The dialogues are crisp,thought-provoking and loud and the lighting effects are unique.

Well this and one of Sidney Lumet's best. The script and dialogues are so powerful that they alone are capable of bringing this film to the top,but what elevates the movie further is the acting.Well deserved Oscar for Peter Finch,Faye Dunaway and I am not that impressed by Beatrice Straight, whose performance is the shortest ever to win an Oscar.Robert Duvall is spot on here and so is Ned Beatty whose character makes the most important point of the film

The best part of the movie as told before is that, the movie will be relevant as long as Humans exist. And with every passing day it will become more relevant, more liked and more darkly true.

Do yourself and others a favor, watch it.

Rock On!!
(2008)

For all those who dream...just dream...
When the promos of this movie hit the screens,I thought it would just be another bollywood movie, and for many it maybe. But for those who identify themselves with the characters,it's a lot more.

A big thumbs up for Abhishek Kapoor for pulling out a decent story,a story about a group of musicians trying to form a Rock band, and making it well at the end. Farhan Akhtar has made it big with his acting though his voice wasn't that good.Arjun as usual does enough justice to his character, though was too sober while playing a rocking guitar!Shahana Goswami has given herself a neat push, and so have Purab Kohli as KD and Luke Kenny as Rob.

The greatest thing about this movie is that it shows how people are easily forced to give up their dreams and move forward with life, suppressing their creativity, and thus, getting lost in the crowd. As mentioned before, many would be able to identify themselves with the situations and characters in the movie.

As the last song calls out, to such people to live their dreams and even if the future road is not guaranteed, even if people discourage, and no matter how hard the path is,believe in yourself and follow your dreams. For only then you are living 'your' life. The great sailor Sinbad was on such guy.

A must watch for right braineans who dream to make it big.

Taare Zameen Par
(2007)

Film wit a clear loud and important message, not to be missed
This film should be watched by all esp parents of young children. The script is fantastic and also performed well by the two leading roles(Amir and Darsheel)

The highlight of this film is that it doesn't preach a lot.It makes us, feel the emotions of the child with a learning problem(dyslexia)

The film opens with a superb scene and most of the scenes in the first half are entertaining. It is in the second half that the message is really addressed thru Amir's character. It is one of those few films that can make a difference in the lives of people. The only irritating performance is that of the child's father else, the overall performance by the main characters is praise worthy.some songs are really slowing down the film. Using animations to evoke a child's feelings has worked out well.

Finally, some may shed a tear and some may laugh, but none can ignore the film and its issues. It will be nice of it is included in the curriculum of the schools.

Rang De Basanti
(2006)

Clearly an awakening movie
An excellent script can always take a movie to places-RDB is a clear example. The actors have done just a decent job(Alice Patten esp, not to be forgotten)But it's the script and direction with an excellent music(A.R.Rahman) which suits the scenes and the mood very well, that clearly awakens the audiences. The general mood of the Indian people esp, the youth has been exploited well.It answers all the doubts and criticisms that have lingered in the people's minds through Sidharth's character,Karan. The highlight in my view is the well planned and executed mixing of the current situations and those during the times of our freedom fighters. The sequences will always be remembered for their point that the problems in the country are similar to those during the freedom fight period.

It is really a surprise that this movie didn't trigger an uprising....,or maybe, who knows the change is happening right NOW.

Not to be missed by any Indian esp,the youth.
