Wu ji
(2005)

outrageous!
I heard about many bad reviews before I see the movie, but really, it is much worse than I can imagine! Most of all, the script, it is disorganized, disoriented, incoherent, illogical, forced, pretentious and totally lack of intelligence. If anyone believe such a script can be made into an epic, the person is demented, thus think the audience would be so too. The bad script provides no character ,no true story, but only ridiculous dialog, which is totally unbearable if one understands Chinese. All the Asian talents in the casts are embarrassedly wasted. Chinese movie makers should realize good movie need true characters and human emotions , like in Ang Li's films.

Enigma
(2001)

enjoyable but disappointing
I stumbled on this film by accident and I did enjoyed it. Not only the plot kept me watching, more were the good acting and Kate Winslet ,of course. Afterwords, I look up wikipedia and read all about ' Enigma' and 'Bletchley Park', and realized the real history about cryptanalysis and cryptologists in WW II were much more fascinating than what the movie had shown. So it is no surprise that people who have knowledge about this part of history will find the movie disappointing, even I do after some reading. Nevertheless, I am glad this segment of history was made into a movie and by chance had me seen it. Still, I could not help but wondering how exciting the movie may be if produced by a more capable team.

Green Fire
(1954)

A quite enjoyable adventure story.
The movie really is good enough for its genre. The story well written and paced, the characters well portrayed, especially by Granger and Douglas. Granger was a natural as the adventurous treasure hunting mining engineer , Douglas, solid and humane , played his long time partner and friend. Together, they fought the hardship of mining, the bandits, sometimes each other, and for the girl Kelly. Kelly was a bit out of place here. She though was very beautiful but somehow too civil and too dignified for the south American jungle background. Her romance with Granger lacked intensity and passion. Fortunately, the story and some actions provided enough intensity and excitement , made the movie quite enjoyable

Young Bess
(1953)

a great love story.
Never mind about the historical accuracy, the movie is very enjoyable as a great love story. It is well written and elegantly portrayed by a good assemble of actors. Simmons is excellent as Young Bess, a smart and strong minded princess growing from adolescence into young womanhood, falling for a much older heroic Admiral, attracting his love from his beautiful and tender loving wife. Granger is a great match as Simmon's lover, the arrogant adventurous war hero, also the loving husband of the more classical beauty Kerr. The love triangle between the three is convincing and moving, and its tragic end is heart broken.

The costume is wonderful, especially of Granger's.

Adam and Evelyne
(1949)

a delightful movie with fine performance.
I bought this movie because I love Granger and Simmons so much in 'Young Bess'. The quality of the VHS copy however is disappointing, I wonder if it due to repairing technical problems or lack of budget? Nevertheless, it is still worth the money because every once is a while, there will be a close-up of Granger or Simmons that is clear enough for an audience appreciation.

Granger and Simmons radiate their charms so effortlessly here because the characters they played are practically themselves--English socialites. The overall delightful result may look easy but it is however important that the script did not step into any wrong note.

Bhowani Junction
(1956)

Ava Gardner is absolutely irresistible in this.
Stars are the primary reason for me to watch old movies, because they just don't make them like that anymore. 'Bowani Junction' provides some of the best; Ava Gardner is so irresistibly attractive in this movie that watching her along is worth every penny spent for buying the copy. Better yet, other things in the film are also good. Granger, playing a more realistic role, is at his best elements as a daring arrogant English Col., match nicely with the beautiful Gardner as a romantic couple. Most of the Indian characters are well portrayed and I love movie with a historical background . The story is complicated ,yet well told and paced. The characters are interesting and well presented. Over all, this is Cukor's movie at its usual fine standard.

This one is not to miss for fans of Granger, Gardner, and Hollywood oldies.

Scaramouche
(1952)

excellent entertainment!
I just love this movie, the best of its kind, excellent in every aspect. 50 years after it was made, thirty more years after I first saw it, not only I still love it, I appreciate more each time watching it again. Appreciate mostly, the Stars, there are just no more stars nowadays with such "star quality" like Granger and Parker, so exquisitely handsome, beautiful and elegant , not a bit common, never ordinary. With such star quality, the movie can elaborate as much as possible of their showmanship and the audience will never feel it is excessive, but only enjoyment. The good old Hollywood magic works at its best here.

The Prisoner of Zenda
(1952)

I like this version more.
I bought a duel set of "The Prisoner of Zenda" that contains both 1937 and 1952 versions, and like the 1952 version much more. First of all, Granger's handsomeness and style fits more to the fairy-tale adventure story of prince and princess, Coleman is too sophisticated for the Rassendyall character. Other casts are better also; Kerr is much prettier and princess like, and Mason is a more impressive villain. I also think that the fighting scenes are better, more elegant and better choreographed. With no less significance is the color ,makes the costume and characters look more sensational, and gives more feeling for the romantic fairy tale .

This movie is pure entertainment, I first saw it in high school, loved it, I still enjoy it 30 years later .

Majimak seungbu
(1994)

This is a good show about how a basketball team wins a championship.
The show starts with a high school basketball championship game, and members of the winning team get to go to a reputable university as 'a team'.Jang Dong-gun plays one of the important but not the star player of this team. All teammates are however sacked out of the good deal by their star player (Dong-min) who secretly accepts a better deal and goes to another university. The following story is how Jang Dong-gun, with all odds against him, tries to build a new team, and finally not only winning the college basketball championship but also the girl (Sham Eun-ha) from Dong-min.

This is a basic formula story about a young athlete overcomes obstacles and succeeds. It works well because of the good athletic ability of Jang Dong-gun and the well staged basketball games. When watching it, one can clearly see the reasons why Jang Dong-gun reaches national stardom with this show and subsequently becomes an international idle.

Cheongchun
(1999)

A worth watching short series.
In this short ten-episode series, JDG played an ordinary computer sale and repairman Hyun-woo, who ran into his high school sweetheart Chae-hee whom she never forgot even after years of parting. Yet, just when he was jubilant about the encounter he also found out that she was engaged to his old school friend Sang-min. After their first meeting, Chae-hee rediscovered her old feelings towards Hyun-woo. To make the triangular situation into multiangular are: Hyun-woo's female colleague Won-young, who fell for Hyun-woo since his first day of work; Dong-ho, a male colleague and close friend of Hyun-woo, who had all along being a loyal admirer for Won-young ; and an old flame of Sang-min.

.The story then circles around their love and hate, devotions and betrayals , angers and sadness, pardons and reconciliations. With the good acting of all stars involved and an interesting enough script, the show maintains an above average quality among shows of the same genre , until the 9th episode when the story made a sudden tragic turn that is quite out of character from the former 8 episodes.

My opinion therefore for anyone interested in the show is be ware of the outrageous ending , it almost ruin the show, luckily, you can also watch only 8 episodes because the story can actually end there properly, or better!

For JDG fans, his acting here is in different style from 'Medical Brothers ' and ' All about Eve'. He did an excellent job in portraying an ordinary soft hearted young man who though was sincere in his love but was confused and undecisive among his love choices.

Chingoo

This movie really shows what a versatile actor Jang dong-gun is.
Because of his extraordinary handsomeness and popularity among female fans. Jang dong-gun often played romantic parts in most of his previous works. Still his works showed clearly that he made an effort in choosing parts with different characters and played them with a wide range of styles, most notably in 'Medical brother','Love wind love song' and 'All about Eve'.But Dong-su in 'Chin goo'is a totally different genre of roles he used to play the result really shows what a consummated actor Jang dong-gun is.

The movie of course is good. It becomes the most money making film in Korean history and won many awards including Jang dong-gun's best supporting actor in Asian film festival. It is a gangster movie but focus more on the characters and their friendship. Dong-su ,a quite tragic and anti-hero character, with no elegance and glory, is opposite of what audience would expect if they are used to a regular Hong Kong style ganster film. With Jang dong-gun's performance, Dong-su's suppressed rage and sadness were effectively but delicately shown, though ruthless in mob confrontations, the audience would still feel sympathetic and mourn for his inevitable death. Besides Jang dong-gun, everything else is also excellent, the photography, the story, the directing styles, other actors, especailly Yu oh-seong (who also won the best actor award in Asian film festival) who play Jeong-suk.

Uiga hyeongje
(1997)

The best Korean tv series I have seen.
This 16 episode drama is well written, well directed and well performed, especially by Jang dong-gun. JDG plays the younger of the two brothers, Sun-Hyung, He is adopted by this family with three generations of doctors and works in the family-own hospital. Sun-Hyung is brilliant, capable ,strikingly handsome and attractive, He is also arrogant, selfish, emotionally immature and irresponsible with love. Sun-Hyung is brought up without lacking material things but with no love from his mother. He can only use his ability and brilliance to compete with his borther for the love of 'the grandfather'-- the head of the family and the hospital. While loosing this competition to the incompetent though very nice older brother, Sun-Hyung also finds out about the secret of his parent's death, thus, starts his revenge. With no less power is the love story between Sun-Hyung and Min-Joo. Jang dong-gun is excellent in portraying Sun-Hyung's character and gives the overwhelming dramatic effect of the entire show.

This tv series success is mainly because of Jang dong-gun.
'All about Eve' is a story about two girls,as friends and rivals ,in their school days, and later as tv news reporters. The two Eve,as both also host a show called "Eve's morning" are characterized with some degree of stereotypes; namely, one is evil, the other good. The story certainly is not as sophisticated as the Bette Davis's classic 'all about Eve'. Moreover, it is on the brink of becoming childish were it not for the character of Hyung-chul(played by Jang dong-gun) and some supporting characters. Hyung-chul is the young boss of the tv station where the two Eve work, a prince type character, predicably becomes the goal of the evil Eve,also predicably will love the good Eve. Jang dong-gun's acting makes Hyung-chul not just exquisite but also human, giving the character a bit of reality than just a fantasy prince. The nice supporting casts also help make the tv station environment believable and interesting. This tv series has become a sensation in many Asian countries due to the fantasy-type love story and characters. I however believe it would not have achieved this success without Jang dong-gun playing Hyung-chul.

Goseuteu
(1999)

It is a story of friendship, love and how to fight evil.
The 'ghost' here is actually the 'devil'. The premise is the devil can take over the body and soul of anyone who has hates and vengeful thoughts,or take over a human body when the person is lonely and weak. The final goal of the devil of course is to take over the human world , and the ones that can fight 'him' are Tae-hyup (played by Jang dong-gun, a police detective) and Dal-sik (a psychic ). Added to the pair is Yae-yoong,who is a close friend of Dal-sik since childhood and his secret love, who also looks exactly the same as Tae-hyup's dead fiancee. Yae-yoong falls for Tae-hyup deeply but is rejected by Tae-hyup because of her resemblance of his dead beloved at the beginning ,and later because of his awareness of Dal-sik's secret love. But Tae-hyup's resistance to love of Yae-yoong gradually gives in and Dal-sik is hurt deeply. They still have to fight the devil however, and the end is quite moving. The special effects in the show are quite primitive, but I sit through the show because of the love story, both among friends and lovers, and feel full entertained.

Paejabuhwaljeon
(1997)

A very enjoyable romantic comedy.
This romantic comedy works so well because it has attractive stars ,playing interesting characters in a well paced fun story. Jang dong-gun,plays a zoo veterinarian, and Kim hee-seon ,a photographer, meet because of their common purpose--avenge their unfaithful ex-lovers. Though predictably, they will fall in love instead, the audience however are not bored with any cliche ,and are entertained with the gradual developing chemistry between this lovely looking couple, There are,in addition , some funny twists along the way that can make you laugh.

The final showdown of love is well designed and staged and certainly make the audience happy .This is as good as one can get from a light romantic comedy!

Yeonpung yeonga
(1999)

It plays like a minuet, light, simple but lovely.
When I first watched it, the copy was without subtitles, and I understood only few Korean. But I went through the movie as I was listening to a piece of music. With no explanation needed, I could feel the characters, a young man alone, on a vacation trip , met a girl who was a tour guide. They travelled together for two days, developed love. Both Jang dong-gun and Ko su-yung showed their emotions so well through their eyes and acting that I hardly need words to know what they were conveying. And they were a good looking couple.

The photography and music were also beautiful and fitted well to the atmosphere of the movie.

I later did see the version with subtitles but it did not add much more to my feelings .

A simple love story with beautiful people and music, this movie gives as much enjoyment as any complicated big movies can.
