Justice League (2001)
Wow!
I've got to say, Justice League is probably one of the best cartoons out there. I love the way they portrayed all the characters; in fact, many of them were better than the originals. I especially liked Batman, J'onn, and Flash- The Bat's stand-offishness fit so well, J'onn's voice and manner of speech were wonderful, and Flash's mix of cockiness and airheadedness was perfect (not to mention *his* voice, which makes me squeal in fangirly joy, haha). The villains were well-done, and Wonder Woman and Hawk Girl just own'd. XD You wouldn't think a teenager would get much joy out of a cartoon, right? But I did. It had some surprisingly grown-up themes, pretty deep ideas. I only have one bad thing to say about this cartoon: It ended too soon.
Death Note: Desu nôto (2006)
Not for the shallow or action-lovers.
Let's get one thing clear: Death Note is not for those who don't like to be challenged or have thoughts provoked. That being said, it was a totally unpredictable, dark, suspenseful, and fascinating show. It's not your typical 'shounen', heck it's not your typical anything. The 'protagonist' is actually the not the 'good guy' depending on your viewpoints, of course. Light Yagami is a bored teen-aged boy with the view that the world is rotten. He finds a notebook which can kill anyone whose name is written in it, as long as the user knows their face as well. He decides to kill off all the criminals in the world. L, the world's greatest detective and technically the antagonist, is trying to catch him. And so it goes. A cat-and-mouse game between two brilliant minds. There isn't too much action; actually, the number of fight scenes can be counted on two hands so far (although I've only read to chapter 75-ish). There's bits of humor that add a little light to the series. The characters are really interesting, unique, and quirky, especially the much-beloved L, a 25-year-old who lives on sugar and rarely wears shoes. This anime will sweep you away and keep you on the edge of your seat. It's part detective show, part fantasy, and all wonderful. It's also being dubbed on Adult Swim and I've seen what they have so far, which is four episodes. They're not doing too bad a job, although L's voice is a little deep and Watari's is annoying. In any case, I'd recommend it to anyone mature enough to get the deep plot line.
Naruto (2002)
It's actually quite unique. Not a ripoff.
The very first episode of Naruto I ever watched was 'Sakura Blossoms.' I had no clue who this pink-haired girl was, or why she was fighting this black-haired chick. I didn't understand why two of the boys were knocked out, and the third, thick-eyebrowed one was defending the girl ('Sakura?', I thought) I was lost in the middle of an arc I hadn't seen before. And I was hooked. I watched the flashbacks and thought it both interesting and sad how Ino and Sakura's friendship had dissolved; I was impressed by how valiantly she was defending her friends. So I looked it up online, and got even more hooked. This. Series. Owns. I've heard quite a few people say there's not any character development, but I don't think that's true. Yes, Naruto is still a knucklehead after several hundred episodes, but really, would it be the same if he got all serious and solemn? The same with the other characters; they develop while still staying true to themselves. This anime had me fascinated, and it still does. The music is beautiful and the animation's not too bad. The plot's not too hard to understand, but it has depth and themes that are applicable to everyday life. It's a good anime to watch if you're just getting into the genre, too. (I happened to like the dub, by the way.)
Hagane no renkinjutsushi (2003)
Don't start the anime if you're just in it for a casual watch....
Fullmetal Alchemist was the first anime I ever watched. As such, it will probably always be my favorite. It's a very good show to start with if you're just getting into anime; the animation isn't bad at all, the plot is dark and interesting, the humor is quirky and bound to make you laugh, and the music is fantastic. I almost cried at several points in the show, and that's rare for me. Even the fillers are either tear-jerkers or hilarious. There are good moral messages, and things that make you think, not to mention enough action, suspense, and cool alchemic reactions to keep anyone occupied. I'd highly recommend this anime, whether you're a newbie or an old hand at Japanese Animation. The drawbacks are that it's not for young children; there is some blood and swearing in it, also the plot gets rather dark at times. However, for anyone 13+, it's an excellent show. Incidentally, I'm a fan of the dubbed version, and I think they did a good job with it.
