The Girl in the Café
(2005)

Absolutely hated it
I watched this movie on recommendation and really wish I hadn't for two main reasons. Firstly, the politics was way to strong. I could have put up with that, however, if it weren't for the second point which is that I had no sympathy whatsoever for the characters.

Lawrence, with his government job, should have known better than to bring a complete stranger on such an important trip without checking out her background first. But mostly it was Gina who didn't just not do anything for me, she actually made me really angry. We are led to believe she actually has feelings for Lawrence, but nothing she says or does backs that up. She's like Jekel and Hyde, apologizing one minute for an outburst then doing it again the next. At one point she reminds Lawrence that he sat down next to her, not the other way around, but I wanted to remind her that no-one forced her to behave the way she did. And her behaviour really was shameful. I spent the entire movie waiting for her comeuppance - which never came.

I gave this 4 stars only because I have seen worse.

The Good Girl
(2002)

Surprisingly good movie
This movie really surprised me in two ways. First, I loved the story. It was a very believable representation of the mundane life that so many people lead. The characters were real and the casting and acting were great. I really felt understanding for Justine even though I didn't always agree with her choices.

Secondly, what surprised me is that Jennifer Aniston can act. She didn't rely on her hair or fame from Friends to get her through the movie. I have a new found respect for her and wish she would take on more roles like this.

I loved the mix of tragedy, humour and realism that for me made this a great movie to watch.

Peter Pan
(2000)

Very Good
Personally I can't stand Peter Pan.

However, my 5 year old daughter found this at the library and asked to borrow it, and I have to admit that it is a wonderful and funny performance. The songs are great (much to my annoyance I have even been discovered humming them to myself). Cathy Rigby is extremely well suited to the role of Peter Pan, and I loved Paul Schoeffler as Captain Hook/Mr Darling.

So even though I don't like Peter Pan I gave it 7/10 and am able to sit through certain bits as my daughter watches it over and over again (unfortunately I was persuaded to buy the video for her).

Elf
(2003)

A family Christmas classic
I took my kids (5 & 3) to see this and we all loved it. I liked the design and style of the North Pole and the animated characters there. Will Ferrell was excellent as Buddy the Elf, I found myself smiling and loving Christmas even more than I already do. The kids and I laughed out loud throughout the movie and will be buying it ready for next Christmas, and the one after that, and the one after that................

** POSSIBLE SPOILER **

The only negative thing I have to say is towards the end concerning the horses in Central Park. My daughter got so scared she was nearly crying, and although I didn't think they were that bad I did think the whole thing was a bit too dark and unfitting with the rest of the movie.

Bruce Almighty
(2003)

Surprisingly entertaining
I went to see Bruce Almighty with a more than a hint of reservation, given Carrey's poor movie choices in the past and the fact that Jennifer Aniston is in it, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

Carrey gave a good performance which was not over the top, and Aniston was fortunately given little to do. The story was good enough, not brilliant, but it did have some surprises with a few lines and actions catching me off guard.

This is not a movie about religion and it barely touches the subject, however it does deliver a clear message towards the end, which was pleasing.

I gave this movie 7/10 simply because I was entertained, had a smile on my face for most of the time, laughed out more than a couple of times, and completely forgot I had children for nearly two hours (parents will understand this). Good job all round.

Vanilla Sky
(2001)

Bad from start to finish.
I had no idea what this movie was about before watching it, and I admit that I was not really in the mood to watch an intense movie. However, this was bad from start to finish. I just don't see what the point of the story was and it just got very silly at the end. Also, it was most confusing. This can be put to good use sometimes, but because I wasn't enjoying the movie anyway I couldn't be bothered to figure out what was going on. The only other thing I have to say is that bad though I think the movie was, it must have had some subliminal effect on me because I had bad dreams for a week after watching it.

Frequency
(2000)

Simply brilliant
This is a simply brilliant movie. It had me interested from beginning to end, mostly on the edge of my seat. I couldn't guess what was going to happen next, I loved the story and all its twists and turns, and the ending didn't let me down. I will be watching this one again.

Moulin Rouge!
(2001)

Too boring
While I agree that the cinematography, visual effects, set design and costume were excellent, I felt I could only rate this movie 6/10. The story was too simple and the movie could have been over in less than an hour had it not been for the songs drawing it out (every turning point had it's own song and dance routine assigned to it that lasted at least 10 minutes). Admittedly, I liked the use of modern songs in a movie set well before the songs were actually written, but the whole thing was just too boring. My husband fell asleep half way through, and even I found it hard to watch it right through to the end.

Crash Point Zero
(2001)

This movie is a joke, from start to finish
I gave this movie 1/10, although I have to say I watched it right the way through simply because it made me laugh so much. After I realized how silly and badly put together it was, I started watching out for all the things that didn't make sense - which was basically the whole movie. The acting, the photography, the script, the plot, the taking-off other movies - the whole effort was a joke. How could someone sit back after making it and think 'Yeah, this is a good movie, I'm pleased with it'? Anyway, it did make me laugh, but only because it was so bad.

The Kid
(2000)

Don't bother unless you're a big Bruce Willis fan
First of all, I wasn't sure who this film was aimed at - it seemed like a story for kids but had stuff in it kids wouldn't understand and find boring. There wasn't really much to it, Bruce Willis wasn't stretched as an actor at all. He did a lot of glancing to the side with that half smile of his - unless you are a big fan of his I wouldn't bother. And if it's the story you're interested in (guy who seems to have it all but is lacking emotionally is taught lessons from a child), I would go to see About A Boy. It has everything this film lacked, humor, sadness and reality.
