Hacks
(2021)

Hackneyed
Less creative funnies than daytime soap. Attempts at humor centered about the usual sex lives - tediously boring; same old stuff. Clichés about a wealthy TV host, Las Vegas show comedian hiring a writer for joke material, but we see very little of that skill in the series. Even her second job as the comedian's archivist is just briefly shown. We do see a lot of pretentious displays of wealth. An uncreative script given other possible priorities, e.g. The Earth burning.

The Beatles: Get Back
(2021)

Lyrics
January,1969. A few weeks of documentary style filming of rehearsals for live shows & a TV special. Interesting #1: Yoko's mostly silent presence next to John. Interesting #2: Ringo like Yoko is mostly a silent observer (except the often tired/sleepy look). Interesting #3: Lots of banter; choosing which key discussions; disagreements; catering & drinking a variety of beverages (oddly we never see anyone leaving to pee). Linda shows up at times for Paul. Pattie shows up once for George. Seems all members smoke including the many suits w/ties wandering about. Lots of of aimless rambling, imitating or playing with other singer's songs. Very lengthy so FF except the ending was unexpected & worth the wait. Bonus: Billy Preston on keyboards.

Note: Are lyrics really that made up? Mostly for rhyme without meaning?

L'art du crime
(2017)

Art for Art's Theft
Still another art stealing crime theme with the usual fake reproduction misdirections. Bonus lots of artist's techniques & symbolism explained (although some of the insights seem fancifully made-up & not verifiable).

That Dirty Black Bag
(2022)

Head Count
A Western with loads of baddies killing each other as well as the innocents. For those who like the genres of Westerns; lots of good vs. Evil themes (Note: questionable as to who is what); counting the dead (heads in this case) scripts.

Hotel Portofino
(2022)

Formulaic
The usual array of stereotypical & formula guests with the usual extreme personalities & backgrounds. Seemed very artificial & staged. Daytime soap level redux.

The Witches
(2020)

A Taste of ...
With this writing, directing, acting, and special effects, well then for you witches of the world - look out! And best to stay away from that pea soup. Smell & taste may not be the most enticing but it has other qualities.

The Last Thing Mary Saw
(2021)

Female Suppression
A mysterious stranger with great & evil forces are at work. A female suppression theme with similarities to the older in that area witch trials. Location is in N. Y., 1843.

The Bad Guys
(2022)

Stealing is Good
Poor voice choices for characters - very generic bland. Animation quality just average. Not for children as it seemed to glorify stealing, theft, dishonesty.

Okja
(2017)

Ahhhhhh!
Animation movie message is that animals have a life which is not meant for the slaughterhouse & human consumption. Good animation detail & cuteness rating. Filmed in Korea; Vancouver, Canada; N. Y.

Zanan-e bedun-e mardan
(2009)

Females as Less Valuable Than Cattle
Iranian story, Tehran '50s. One theme was the movement for freedom & democracy. With the other we start with a suicide. Quotes, "The only freedom from pain is to be free from the world." Male to female, "If you leave the house i'll break your legs." "If a woman can't satisfy her husband, it's his right to take another wife." Writers forgot to add FGM & dishonor killing to the abuses.

Power Book II: Ghost
(2020)

Stereotyping - season 2
Stereotyping of people with the usual crime, drugs, killings. Forensics were poorly & cheaply shown such as a a fully covered lab victim - cheap. Oddly, and not realistically, only one child appears & briefly in this series.

The Northman
(2022)

Seen Before Theme
Actually a little disappointed. Seemed very limited to one locality and action was just a lot of sword play (to be expected) over a wronged young future king (that's been done many times before).

La Fortuna
(2021)

You Decide What's Fair
1. Most nationalistic themed movies need a baddie. In this case it's the U. S. while the good guy is Spain; where the script originated.

2. Maritime salvage & "finders" laws vary by country & time period. So let's make it simple.

3. Spain was taking money, perhaps gotten unethically or not legally, from the U. S. to Spain 100s of years ago when the ship sank perhaps by conflict. Spain has made no active effort to retrieve the lost treasure so may have given up the possible right of ownership.

4. Ship, forgotten & abandoned, is discovered by a person, portrayed as a greedy American, who risks his life; his time; his money to search & find the lost-at-sea treasure. By salvage law he is entitled to compensation relative to value. By finders law he is rightfully the new owner.

5. Your decision?

Verdens verste menneske
(2021)

Bored??
Appropriate title; we've all seen that human trait of life centered around self interest/desires. In this case it's wanting both independence & unconditional love (without having to give either away/back). So when boredom, for what ever reasons, can easily be solved by new conquests. Summation: There's enough spoiled people to experience to have to make a movie about it.

Rocco Schiavone
(2016)

The Usual Italian Offering
Italian movie making is stuck in a rut of crime, drugs (container ship containers of course), murder, stereotyped detective. Title of series tells you its centered on one person and of course to make it different from the norm he's got an aggravating, obstinate personality and usual girl issues.

The Artist's Wife
(2019)

Paintings Looked Cheap
About getting old, Alzheimer's, love, being rich & spoiled, but in seeing this I think of & compare to the billions who suffer short lives w/disease & poverty. Priorities. Paintings shown were a lot of cheap splotches of rectangles. Better to hire any number of real artist's like the clavadetcher consortium of struggling artists.

Temple
(2019)

Studio Money Prevails
DVD lacked subtitles for the elderly, disabled, hearing impaired, and ESL viewers. Disrespectful & cheap on the part of the producers especially when audio & enunciation is poor.

Memory
(2022)

Well Crafted Usual
Another Liam crime thriller w/usual kills. The question is, as you watch, is Liam to live and make another "Liam" style movie or is this his final one. I would tell you, but my memory fails me.

Cinderella
(2021)

Lost Its Charm
Mostly stage style dance/musical. The problem is the contemporary vibe angle loses the charm of the story. Essentially the story's message is lost in the cheap commercial choreography theatrics. Even the mice were poorly presented & animated. One positive: The costuming was good.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
(2022)

A Different View
Interesting way to present a crime story. A good reminder that it's all story telling (made up places & events, usually) & acting (making believe you're someone else). Cage is our vehicle in this case & he did a great job.

Oddly it's suppose to be in Mallorca, Spain but filmed in Hungary, Croatia, & L. A.

Everything Everywhere All at Once
(2022)

Poorly Written
Potentially an interesting storyline but poorly written; difficult to follow; excessive flashbacks and scene jumps; not at all a believable sci-fi. Only interesting scenes take place washing clothes in the laundromat.

Gold
(2022)

Thirsty?
I've seen a lot of movies; maybe too many, and most are redux repeating formula scripts. But, this one I've never seen one quite like it. No CGI or studio props needed just the realism of a South Aussie desert and the unimaginable conditions it was filmed in. Nor was much made-up dialogue needed to provide rescuing tension. One can even find a bit of commentary on human behavior. I suggest you have some H2O handy while watching.

Ambulance
(2022)

Clichéd Chase Scenes
Bank robbery plus extended car (ambulance in this case) chase scenes. Neither the robbery nor the hours long vehicle chase in heavy traffic & dozens of police vehicle (plus helicopters) were at all believable or anything different (same crashes & flying tip overs) from what's been seen countless times before.

Besides annoyingly long & not believable the movie seems to glorify killing including bystanders. And, a portrayal of police as incompetent while some of the baddies are shown sympathetically as victims of circumstance & poor decision making.

We Need to Do Something
(2021)

Critter's Tongue as Highlight
Huh?? An hour and a half watching people with not very good acting skills (or a believable script to work with) argue in a room where inexplicably they get trapped by a tree blocking the door. Door is open just enough to reach out. Dad drops cellphone just beyond reach so why don't they find something in the room to reach it?. Oh, for some reason no windows or other doors. As main props, to add to the not clearly explained storyline, is an animal tongue with candle style witchcraft.

Firestarter
(2022)

Toast
Still yet another script (amongst dozens) of a person able to create & project fire. Cheap special effects, e.g. A flamethrower off camera is used to toast some people, but where it projects from - who knows, maybe her nose. Also seen before the usual secret government ( and other groups) project to create (or control) "the gifted" for obvious nefarious reasons. Added is the fiery girl's dad is a mind controller with bloody tears for the effort (also seen many times before).
