So much better than the original! Firstly, this show actually has a plot beyond the demon of the week. The actors can actually ACT. It's not a T&A show where the "feminist" wannabes do nothing but expose their bodies in pole-dancer costumes. I loved Shannen Doherty, but when she left, the quality of the show went along with her. Rose McGowan was great, but Milano ruined the show for me. She couldn't even speak her lines with any kind of coherent flow (she's awful). Combs seemed sarcastic and angry all the time, her character being pretty flat, TBH.
The diversity on the new Charmed is refreshing. I absolutely LOVE Mel's character, and the fact that Macy is a tentative eldest child makes complete sense given her mysterious past. Maggie is a typical kid, who has to grow up quickly after her mother's death. The growth of these characters together shows the evolution of a sisterly bond that did have to grow from something not strong, to something unbreakable.
Harry, the white lighter, is also far more complex than a dude who bounces in and out of scene for answers to solve the problem from the nebulous elders. I love that the elders aren't a bunch of old goats living in the clouds, too, but are elder witches. In the first season, they are challenged by a different group of powerful witches who, unlike the elder witches, care about helping mankind with more than supernatural threats.
I was surprised at how good this show really is. I can only surmise that all the negative reviews are from either sycophants to the original cast, or that they are so immature that they cannot watch a very good show with an open mind. Their loss. Gone are the cheesy rhyming spells. Their latin spells are far more compelling. I am sure a gajillion haters will find my review unhelpful, but hopefully, people with an open mind will read it and give the show a chance. It more than deserves it.
