Undead
(2003)

Well Shoot me in the Ass Mate and Call me Marion ..I liked it.
I so expected to hate this film. I had very low expectations for this film. People here on IMDb seem to hate it with a passion. I hardly see anyone talk about it. So when I decided to rent the movie ..I thought to myself ..Why should I rent this one? then I realized because I like renting all types of horror films ..the good the bad and the ugly. And because I had nothing else to do that Friday night.

The premises of Undead is meteors and what seems to be burning water rains from the sky on a small Austrialian town turning people into vicious zombies. Let me just put it out there.. if you are looking for a scary zombie movie... rent Night of the Living Dead 68'. But if you are looking for a very comical outlook on the zombie genre .. rent Shaun of the Dead ...then rent Undead.

I found myself laughing and found myself very into this movie. The movie is not high and mighty great by any standards and the movie feels like you are on acid sometimes but it's very enjoyable and it's a fun rental. My favorite character out of them all is of course Marion. He is this gun tooting slinging guy that could be Neo's (Matrix) side kick if he was asked to. Take a shot and rent it if you have not yet.

Haute tension
(2003)

Pleasantly Surprised. This is a Bloody Good Horror Film.
I heard of High Tension before. It came out last summer but for some reason the trailer never really caught my attention enough to go out and see it. I thought the synopsis sounded interesting but I figured this is a movie more suited to be viewed on DVD than in theaters. I rented High Tension one weekend and this movie is the answer to the question many horror fans always ask ... "Where are the bloody horror films?". If you are looking for a bloody interesting horror film. High Tension may be your prescription.

High Tension (Haute Tension) is about a girl name Marie who is coming to stay with her good friend Alex at her parents house. While in the house Marie wakes up to find an unknown man in the house killing the family and kidnapping Alex.

I am pleasantly surprised how good the movie was. And it's a surprise to me considering I am not too found of movies that are dubbed. The movie was filmed in French language and then dubbed for the US with English voice overs. If you rent the DVD. Best bet is to play it with the French audio and English subtitles.

Definitely a must see 9/10

Wolf Creek
(2005)

90 Minute Movie and Only 20 Minutes of it is Worthy
Maybe I am being a little too harsh here ...at least 24 minutes of it is worthy. Wolf Creek which is supposedly based on a true story is about 3 friends go backpacking/driving in the Austrailian outback and comes across an sadistic serial killer.

I finally rented Wolf Creek but I wanted to see it in theaters in December but I passed on it and I am very lucky I did. If I got bored watching this film on DVD ..then I would had fell asleep or decided to walk out if I saw it in theaters. Let me just say it plain and simple ..this movie is boring. Not even the last 24-30 minutes or so can make up for the first nothingness of the first hour.

There are two types of horror films. One that gets into the action right away and one is where we get to know the characters for awhile which builds tension and then the pay off is big when the action starts. Wolf Creek is along the lines of building character development first and then the action began. But it failed tremendously. Why? Because even though I got to know these 3 for an hour. I still could give a crap about any of them. Second, there is no character development at all. If character development is driving, eating, kissing, sleeping on the beach ..then give me a pen and paper I will write a horror screenplay.

All there is to the first hour is nothing. Nothing interesting. Nothing that I can remember that would make the second half more significant. This movie makes us wait an hour for any action to began and when it does happen. It is not all that great. I am not someone that has to have action in a horror film within the first 5 minutes. I love horror films that build character but Wolf Creek (and I will say it again) has NO character development. I don't know the three anymore towards the end than I did from the start. This film was definitely a let down.

Hostel
(2005)

Eli Does Good Second Time Around
When you go to see Hostel, you have an idea just from previews and commercials on TV that it's about 3 backpackers (Josh, Paxton and Oli) that backpack in Europe looking to be with some of the finest Euroupean woman seen to man. So you can just imagine much of the first half is beautiful naked woman who they have encounters with. The first half is very funny, very light hearted. Almost can't believe it will somehow turn into a film that will have you clutching your eyes every now and then to look away from certain sadistic scenes. It was almost weird being in a theater and actually seeing people around me reacting to the torture scenes and looking away. It was weird. Not even while watching Saw this happened.

Hostel is directed by Eli Roth who also directed the much hyped 'Cabin Fever'. Almost can't believe it's the same guy doing this film. There are difference between films but the humor we get in Cabin Fever also shines through in Hostel.

Oh, so you want to know about the torture scenes eh? Well, in all honesty. It's not the blood that pops out that makes it gory but it's the fact that we are seeing humans being tortured is a good enough to have anyone shaking in their boots. Almost makes me not ever want to backpack to another country ever lol.

In closing, in a day and age where most tend to stay home and watch most of their movies on DVD. Hostel is one film you won't regret seeing in theaters. I must say the best part of watching Hostel is actually having an audience that is into it as much as I am. It was great. The theater experience for this film was quite like no other...get a chance to see it in theaters while you can.

Saw II
(2005)

Saw II is a Decent Follow-Up
I am a big fan of Saw I. So when I heard a sequel will be made, I had mixed reactions. On one hand ..I love Saw and it would be cool to see how Saw II turns out but on the other hand most horror sequels suck. But let me just say... Saw II will not disappoint.

...This time around we have 8 people being played by Jigsaw in a house and have to find antidotes to an deadly gas they are breathing. Out of the 8 people trapped by Jigsaw,... Amanda and Xavier are like the only characters that makes Saw II memorable. The rest, I can really give a damn about. Donnie Walhberg of New Kids fame who plays Detective Mason actually did a decent job in this movie but his character was not likable enough for me to root for and maybe that is the way it was intended to be.

The high points of the movie is you never get bored. And oh yes, there is blood ..plenty of it. Not to mention, the last 30 minutes of the film is an awesome roller-coaster ride and have some cool twists and turns but still in my opinion cannot top the twist we saw in Saw I.

Still, the movie is not all bed and roses ..some low points for me is that it lacks that gritty fear I felt Saw had. I guess because this time around not only do we hear Jigsaw's voice but we actually see him and get to know him for the whole 90 minutes. And by golly, actually feel sorry for the guy. I am glad we got to know Jigsaw but seeing him throughout the film made the film less scary. What made Saw I really creepy was Jigsaw's voice and we had no face to match it to ..now we do. Imagine Michael Myers and Jason without their mask for the entire movie.

Overall, in a day and age where most horror sequels suck. Saw II prevails. So, get popcorn, get soda, watch the movie and enjoy!

Total Request Live
(1998)

I Remember When this Show was Total Request
I was home today and started channel surfing and Total Request Live was on. Man, this show brings back memories. I was a big fan of this show as an an teen in 98' (I cringe lol) and I have not seen this show since 2001. That's when an already quirky show just became boring to me after so many changes.

A lot of people may not remember but Total Request Live started out not being live in 98'. It was called Total Request with Carson Daly and it first played at night. There was no live audience just Carson Daly sitting down by a TV. The show was 30 minutes long and counted down the top videos of the day. I remember Hanson being #1 all the time with their video "Weird".

Then some thing happened in the later part of 98'. The show moved to afternoons. It went from 30 to 90 minutes long. It got an live audience inside and out. The birth of TRL was born. As a teen this show was fun to come home too. Even though the countdown was shallow and more of an popularity contest and not many good music videos made it but they had a lot of guests and music and it was just fun and cool at the time to us teens. This show believe it or not made pop acts like Nsync and BSB even more popular than they already were. They owned the countdown seriously. If BSB was not #1 than Nsync was and vice versa. But TRL also made grunge metal bands like Korn, Limp Bizket popular too. People who were into pop were introduced to rock and vice versa from the countdown.

Carson Daly became an overnight sensation and was so popular as an DJ they even started an be an MTV DJ contest. I remember when Jesse Camp won the contest. Oh, man watching him was hilarious...he was great.

Then 2001 rolls in and the show just changed. They added a whole lot of DJ's that I could give a crap about. Carson was hardly featured then he finally left. The videos were cut short or never really showed. I guess music just changed in general. I always thought BSB and Britney Spears were horrible acts to be always topping the countdown but I watch today and you have Ashlee Simpson, Hilary Duff, Ryan Cabrera all in the countdown and wow, Nsync, Britney and BSB don't look so bad.

I guess my most reason for stop watching TRL is that I am a teen no more. I just grew up. Whatever it was I will always remember this show at once being really fun to watch as a teen.

The Warriors
(1979)

Can You Dig it? I Did!
The Warriors is excellent on so many levels. Music, the camera work, story line, acting, the scenery of New York etc. The Warriors have a simple premises. The Warriors is about an Coney Island gang (Warriors) must now try to make it back to their turf in Brooklyn from upper Bronx when they are falsely accused of killing the head leader of the Gramercy Parks (one of the biggest and most powerful gangs in New York) at an all gang meeting with hundreds of gangs from all over New York. Ironically, the meeting was to stop the violence between gangs and bring all the gangs of New York together as one to be 100,000 strong against the police.

The Gramercy Parks set the word out. If you see the Warriors. Bring them back to me alive... if not alive than dead. So all the gangs of New York know they are trying to make it back home and all want a piece of them.

The cool thing about this movie is the gangs. Each gang has their own personal style. One gang looks like a baseball team with the baseball uniforms and makeup and baseball bats. One gang has on jean overalls with roller skates and one gang (the Orphans) has on gray shirts with blue jeans. The warriors style was a vest with no shirt underneath.

I was not born when the Warrriors first came out in 79. So I do not know how much it impacted the gangs and such when it was in theaters but I remember seeing it for the first time on TV in like 89 or 90 and it impressed me as a child then and still does now as an adult.

Land of the Dead
(2005)

WTF, I mean WTF was George Thinking?
I waited and waited and finally George A. Romero came back with Land of the Dead. The 4th installment of the the Dead series. Night is excellent and is the best out of the Dead series. Dawn of the Dead (78) is also excellent but loved it mainly for the social atmosphere and the mall scenes are awesome. Day of the Dead is blah. So I was hoping... Please at least let Land of the Dead be at least better than Day ... and Land was but that's not saying much.

Land of the Dead is one of the biggest disappointment for me this year. Let's sum it up.. we have zombies that shoot guns, blow up cars, pump gas, play the banjo, and hold hands with other zombies. Does this sound ridiculous? It is! I know Bub in Day basically paved a way for a zombie to learn a little but all he did was push a tape recorder button and now we have zombies that swim. WTF, I mean WTF was George thinking?

Scary Movie 3
(2003)

This Movie is like 20 Steps up from Scary Movie 2
With such horror movies like, Scream and I know What You Did Last Summer. Keenan Ivory Wayans was able to spawn Scary Movie. Scary Movie was hilarious and basically made fun of the teen horror films like Scream. I remember watching it and laughing my head off. Scary Movie 2 was awful and terrible and not remotely funny whatsoever. It seem like the Scary Movie series was done. But not so. Now we get a new director named David Zucker (Airplane and Naked Gun series) and some of the same cast from the first minus Shawn and Marlon Wayans and added some funny spoof from Signs, The Ring and Matrix Reloaded and now we have a step up from Scary Movie 2.

Anna Faris is back as Cindy Campbell and Regina Hall is back as Brenda Meeks. Let's face it without Anna and Regina, the Scary Movie series can just basically stop. They both are hilarious. A tape that kills you in seven days is swirling around that Cindy saw and now she is trying to warn everyone about it.

The movie does some funny spoof of Signs (yeah, they stick it to Shaymalan again), The Ring, Matrix Reloaded, and 8 Mile . It is not as funny as The R rated Scary Movie but it has that Airplane comedy feel and it made me chuckle a lot and is 10 times better than the second installment.

So if you want a good laugh at some crazy spoofs, watch Scary Movie 3.

Frailty
(2001)

Criminally Underrated Bill Paxton Film
Who would have thought Bill Paxton of Aliens, Titanic, and Werid Science fame would end up making a really, really good psychological horror film? No not me but he did.

Bill Paxton stars and directs this horror gem. He plays a father of two young boys Adam and Fenton. One night he comes into the boy's room and tells them he have been visited by God and God picked him to be a demon slayer on earth. The young son Adam without hesitation believes him but the oldest son Fenton does not and thinks his dad gone nuts. Now we as an audience must figure out if the dad is just crazy or is he really telling the truth about being a chosen as an demon slayer by God.

Overall the film never bores you and makes you cringe at time. This movie is not a blood fest not even close but it's the psychological aspect of the movie that makes you cringe. There are some really good scenes and the two boys played by Matt O'Leary and Jeremy Sumpter do an great acting job here but Matt really does an excellent job as the rebel son who does not believe his dad.

It's a must see.

Identity
(2003)

Despite a Terrible Twist Ending the Rest of the Movie is Good
Identity has all the elements of a good who done it thriller but looses a few brownie points for it's twist ending. And that sucks because this film needed no twist ending. The story was going really good as it was.

During a terrible rain storm several people are derailed from being where they need to be and end up at an motel. You have a hooker, an hotel clerk, an actress, an limo driver, an married couple with a young boy, a young married couple, and an police officer who is trying to relocate an prisoner. They soon realize that they are being killed off one by one. But then this movie makes a turn and you begin to think it could be something else which makes the film even more creepy and intense. Then we get the suck twist ending.

Like I said before. Identity is a good movie despite the ending. I love watching it whenever it's on.

Saw
(2004)

Don't Mess with Jigsaw
I missed out on seeing Saw in theaters. I actually went to see the Grudge instead of Saw Halloween weekend in 2004 and boy do I regret it. I picked up the Saw DVD when it was first released earlier this year and man this movie is everything you want in a psychological thriller. The movie goes at a great pace and you never get bored.

Saw has a twisted premises. Two men wake up in a dirty abandon bathroom .. only god knows where they are. They are also chained by their ankles on each side of the room. One of the men is name Dr. Gordon, a doctor of course and the other is Adam. But also in the room is a dead man in a pool of blood that have basically shot himself before Adam or Gordon had waken up.

During the course of the movie both men must figure out how they got there, ...who put them there and must figure out how to break free from the chains around their ankles.

This movie is twisted and it's interesting from beginning to end. So find your path to Saw on DVD or on cable and Enjoy!

Cabin Fever
(2002)

I Honestly think the Hype Killed this Film.
Before Cabin Fever came out.. the word in the horror world was that Cabin Fever is one of the most gruesome, bloodiest, scariest, funniest, craziest horror movie ever. So when it opened in theaters, everyone's expectation was sky high ..even mine. Yes, I was kind of disappointed with Cabin Fever because it was hyped so much. I mean you had Peter Jackson the director of Lord of the Rings saying in the trailer this is one of best horror movie he's ever seen. Now if I did not go in with such huge expectations, I could had enjoyed it for what it was. I really started enjoying Cabin Fever once it started playing on cable. Every time it comes on I watch it and I begin to love this film a lot more.

Cabin Fever is directed by up and comer Eli Roth. He's a guy that loves horror films and mentioned in several articles this movie pay homage to his favorites like Evil Dead.

Cabin Fever is about 5 college kids who had just finish test finals and are enjoying some relaxation and fun in a cabin in the woods but the fun is cut short when they learn a flesh eating bacteria disease is around. The main character Paul is played by Boy Meets World actor Rider Strong. Rider was surprisingly good in this movie and Paul is the character you root for the most to not get the disease.

The movie is funny. The funniest movie ever? Hell no! This movie is scary. The scariest movie ever? Hell no! This movie is bloody. The bloodiest? Hell no! So I'm finally enjoying the movie for what it's worth and it is and has a potential to end up being a horror movie classic. There are tons of films that people hated when it first came out and then come to love it semi years later. Cabin Fever I believe is one of them.

Night of the Living Dead
(1968)

Night of the Living Dead is still the Best out of the Series
With George A. Romero's latest Land of the Dead finally making it to the big screen.... I can still say with cheer that Night is still the best and the scariest out of the Dead series. The first time I ever saw Night of the Living Dead I was like 12 and I was scared out of my mind. This is one movie that even till this day I cannot watch it late at night with the lights off.

The premises is that the dead are now coming back to life and are now eating human flesh. The movie is scary and intense. So watch this movie late at night with the lights off ....if you dare.

"They are coming to get you Barbara"

Night of the Comet
(1984)

It's a Fun Cheesy Zombie 80's Movie
Yes, the 80's produced many cheesy horror films but the thing about those cheesy horror films is that they were fun to watch and you just love them. Night of the Comet is one of those cheesy 80's horror films that I love and I say cheesy in a good way. Movies like these are still produced today but instead of cheesy I use crappy because that is exactly what they are. Many of today's crappy horror films, they do not have the heart and the fun like the cheesy horror movies of the 80's.

Night of the Comet is a simple story. A comet is expected to fly over the earth and just about everyone in the world went outside to see it. The comet fly's over the earth and basically turns almost all human life into dust that were outside. A lot of the people in doors turned into dust but many that were exposed indoors survived but sooner or later will turn into ugly zombie like creatures who eyes hurt. Now comes in the two Vally Girl sister survivors. They both survive I believe being enclosed in metal in different places. I love the scene where Samantha was talking to her sister Regina in the house telling her what she is going to do today and Regina takes her outside and says "look ..look there is no one out there". I love that scene.

This movie is fun and just does not get the respect it deserves. They need to seriously release this on DVD.

Dawn of the Dead
(2004)

Whoa, This is a Good Remake!
Everyone wants to cringe the moment they hear one of their favorite movie of the past will be remade. So when I first heard a remake will be done of the 78 classic Dawn of the Dead.. I was not too happy but still curious. I went to see Dawn of the Dead on opening weekend and whoa I had an awesome time.

Dawn of the Dead is not just a good remake ..it is a good zombie film in general. 28 Days Later basically kicked started the zombie genre again in 2003 and in a sense helped this movie get green lighted. It shows that the zombie genre is in full force because Dawn of the Dead 2004 does not disappoint. The director Zack Snyder really knew what we wanted. He did not just do a remake and carbon copied the original. He made the film stand out on its own and one of the thing he added was fast moving zombies. In my opinion it worked and made the film intense.

The movie waste no time getting to the blood and gore. Within the first 10 minutes we are treated to an intense zombie opening followed by one of the best opening credits ever. What better way to start off this bloody film than with Johnny Cash? We have some cool actors in this movie like Ving and Sarah and some actors who I have never heard of that are good in this movie. But Ving owns this movie.

Lastly, when the end credits roll. Do not turn it off. The movie continues through the credits. The movie gets 10/10 not because it is the best movie I ever seen but because the movie worked on so many levels and that is surprising for a remake.

28 Days Later...
(2002)

Danny Makes A Great Little Horror
Been nearly 2 years since the release of 28 Days Later and it is still as interesting and good as ever. One thing that sticks out in the movie is the beginning where Jim walks around an deserted London looking for anyone. One of the best cinematic opening in a movie. From that point the movie grips you in till the end.

The premise of the movie starts out with some animal activist trying to free some apes in a laboratory not knowing they are infected with rage. 28 Days Later we find Jim waking up from a coma. Jim does not know what is going on and does not know where is everyone and neither do we. We find out when Jim finds out.

Overall, this was one of the best movies of 2003 and Danny Boyle did a terrific job. He should make more horror films.
