World of Winx
(2016)

Okay follow-up to the original
It was pretty jarring to see that this spin-off got rid of the Specialists, characters who made the original Winx Club great. Still, I checked out World of Winx to see what it had in store. I like the more mature art style and some of the fight sequences, but it always feels like there's something missing. I kept expecting Sky or Brandon to show up, but no, they're only barely referenced! The new transformation scenes are a little uncomfortable, too. Hopefully the live-action Winx Club won't push the Specialists to the sidelines.

Winx Club
(2004)

Great cartoon, but avoid early English dubs
I love this cartoon for its surprisingly good action. The more negative reviews here seem to be about the terribly mis-managed English localizations of the show. Apparently, the show was originally done in Italian until 2010, when Viacom/Nickelodeon started producing it. So for the earlier episodes (seasons 1-2), there are a few different, almost unprofessional-seeming dubs from random studios...and they censor/reduce all of the layered characters into the same dumb stereotypes. Yikes!

Avoid these 3rd-party dubs and watch either the Italian episodes or the newer Nickelodeon ones (both overseen by this show's creator, Iginio Straffi). It's a really fun watch and my favorite character is Timmy (Tecna's boyfriend).

Toy Story 4
(2019)

Great add-on, but weighed down by too many new characters
Getting this out of the way first: the first three Toy Stories are 10/10 movies in my opinion. The fourth had the potential to be on the same level, but it (just barely) misses that mark. I say this because it works amazingly as a movie on its own (great balance of breathtaking animation, good humor, interesting characters), but it slightly disappoints in the area where it really matters (giving fans of the first three a chance to see all of their favorite characters again). I get that the movies have always been focused on Woody's story, but his group of friends deserve more than a few lines each. The new characters (especially Key and Peele's stuffed animals) are funny but not interesting enough to justify pushing Buzz Lightyear into a minor role. Sticking with fewer new characters (was the mini cop toy really necessary?) would have made so much more sense and opened up opportunities to fit in the rest of the original Toy Story cast. When they make a fifth Toy Story (which is sure to happen, judging by the box office receipts), I hope to see more of the other toys we have been following since 1995.

The Trip to Italy
(2014)

Skip this one, go straight to the third Trip
I watched the first Trip movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. Naturally I expected the sequels to bring more of the same wit and artsy production, but I found myself quite bored during this one. The Trip to Italy is not good, it's not bad, but it felt like a waste of my time. I couldn't get over the dialogue, which is painfully unrealistic despite being framed as genuine. The third Trip movie, The Trip to Spain, is much better and a return to form. Unless you want to tire yourself with nearly two hours of uninteresting and unbelievable comments, skip this Trip and watch the first and third ones.

Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel
(2011)

An audacious lady who became the First Name of Fashion in "Modern Times "
Her first name Diana is pronounced "Deeanna). Unsure if that was to sound better with Vreeland or was the original pronunciation. It would surprise me not one whit if she suddenly changed it because it went better - that is the audaciousness of who she was.

To view this very well done documentary is a sheer delight and an amazing time capsule of women's fashions and a very intimate and up close documentary of the woman who has had the biggest impact of anyone on the planet on women's fashions.

You will be highly entertained, laugh often at this most audacious lady who says "Live the life you know you want, make it your own". Who's statements of fact become what she terms "faction" a better story than telling it like it actually was.

It is rare to meet someone who so lived their life at full throttle. A fascinating in-depth documentary that includes conversation with Diana, those who worked with her, celebrities, musicians, etc.

You cannot help but be mesmerized and riveted. Loads of pictures, covers of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, and notable people.

Her impact on fashion, photography, creating an experience on the pages of these fashion magazines that challenged, entertained and gave snippets of geography, history and knowledge to the reader was and still is unmeasurable.

I am so happy that I enjoyed the full movie experience to this bigger than life Grand Dame. A definite buy when available on DVD - but I do encourage you to see it in the theater.

Casa de mi padre
(2012)

Ultimately disappointing - watchable but could have been so much more fun to watch!
This movie is at its best when it is "tongue in cheek" and using "earnest" performances in a gentle slap to westerns, drug cartel flicks, and romantic drama. It is at its best as a western, over-the-top soap opera.

Unfortunately these inspired gems (and they are good) come too few and far between otherwise just ordinary scenes. It would have been really fun to have the writers keep up that skewering of the genres and would have been a delight to watch.

Typically the best moments in the film were with Will Ferrell who gave an inspired turn as out as our hero. An amazing cast in what is a wildly uneven film in good performances which each of these actors could have given stellar performances with more inspired scenes. A shame. It felt the writers were a bit lazy to not keep it revved up.

In conclusion: While watchable, I would not recommend spending the money on the film at the theaters, I would recommend waiting to rent or download. Not a buy for me, nor a second viewing.

Tequila and Bonetti
(1992)

My annoying self, my pretty partner and the cute annoying voice-over dog
I really wanted to like this cop show. But for me the 3-way partnership of Detective Nick Bonetti (Jack Scalia) and his delightful partner Angela Garcia (Mariska Hargitay) and that annoying "talking", and I do mean every voice-over thought that could be culled out of that dog, got to be too much.

The dog is cute enough but the constant voice-overs of his every thought just became too much of the tale. Just a few clever thoughts voiced per episode would have worked better. You really don't want to be beating him to his lines.

Making the dog the 3rd partner put him front and center to the episodes and, for me got in the way of any kind of gripping action and interplay of the 2 human partners. Nobody seemed to be having that much fun nor really working their performances, except maybe that annoying dog, LOL. I might have enjoyed that canine a whole lot more if he only had the occasional clever punch line. He really is an adorable dog, don't get me wrong.

So for me, this comedic cop drama fell flat. Bonetti himself had his own annoying quirks. His character was the Hollywood depiction of a typical Italian machismo Brooklyn cop as a fish-out-of-water cop in L.A. The back story of his accidental fatal shooting of a 12-year-old girl gave us some sympathy for his mental anguish-tortured soul as shown to some, i.e. the ex-wife but not to others. such as his boss. as in his 'I'm over it" false bravado. Bonetti is an accomplished pianist as we see him at the keyboards in all three of the first episodes. So we see he has a bit of a cultured, hip side to his cop persona.

Created by Donald P. Bellisario who is also top writing credit for the episodes of this one-season show as well as executive producer. His amazing and prolific talent is so many classic shows such as NCIS, Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap, JAG, Airwolf and Black Sheep Squadron, and the list goes on, really had me hopeful for a show I'd missed in 1992-1993.

The first three episodes was it for me, I just couldn't stomach any more of Bonetti himself or the abundant voice-over thoughts of that cute but annoying dog. It was pretty clear to me I wanted to ax this after the 1st episode, and by the 3rd episode, reaching for that ax had become an obsession. I succumbed.

Tweety's High-Flying Adventure
(2000)

not as high flying as Tweety would have it
As another reviewer noted - with the jumbled cities in the different countries. This story missed a great teaching lesson to children on geography. It actually hinders a child's geographical knowledge. A real shame. The story skipped along too fast on more interesting scenarios in favor of less interesting ones that it seemed to drag on. The script wasn't sharp and up to feature length standards. So is more suitable for kids than adults.

I found it very annoying that so many of the flying scenes and even scenes on the ground showed Tweety without his passport which had to be with him at all times to have it stamped by the consul representative and of course the required 80 cat paw signatures. Terrible continuity on that. The passport appeared and disappeared at will so many times. Tweety just wasn't all that character driven - we didn't' see him flex his acting muscles as he does in his better cartoons. I'm an adult fan of animation. I would not view this a second time, barely held some of my interest.

Unstable
(2009)

A newlywed is either unstable or new new husband wants her that way
A whirlwind courtship has newlywed (Shiri Appleby)thinking she's in bliss. She's the beloved daughter of a wonderful set of wealthy parents and has a tight relationship with her stepsister. She was in an abusive relationship in the past and her psychiatrist had been working with her on her precarious mental state much of it having to do with that abusive lover from the past. From day one of her courtship with her lover turned husband little things were happening, things misplaced, and more. She's trying valiantly to hold on to her sanity and decide if her husband wants her unstable or she sabotaging herself. I liked her spunk.

This new TV movie is is a bit predictable but a decent entry to to this genre.

Undue Influence
(1996)

If you are a Brian Dennehy fan -- watch this mystery
First off, I'm a huge fan of Brian Dennehy. Both ladies gave good performances as well as the supporting cast. And of course, Dennehy was a very interesting attorney. We are drawn into his personal life as a multi-faceted man. He is so adept at showing a honest range of emotions, personality, and character. This is a good twisty mystery. Yes, it is a longer film, but includes plenty of drama both in and our of the court room.

If you are viewing as a TV movie, I'd recommend recording if you have a recorder device to speed up your viewing pleasure (commercials). Interesting plot developments and some good ethical questions were presented. Even if you guess the guilty, you will enjoy this mystery.

Bridal Fever
(2008)

Dahia takes both Gwen and her best girlfriend under her wing to teach both how to get the proposal, the ring and to the altar. Gwen finds herself attracted to a man similar to her past relationships and a guy who lets her know upfront he is ready for marriage to the right woman.

A likable cast and some nice life lessons make enjoyable for women and couples who like a sweet romantic tale. Relax and watch over popcorn or over wine.
