Lopez vs. Lopez
(2022)

Vulgar and lowbrow.
Downgraded my star review after 4 episodes of the third season. Once sort of clever and charming the writing has degraded into vulgar double-entendres piled one upon another. Even some of the actors seem to be embarrassed by their lines and hesitant to deliver them. The plots are predictable, mundane, boring. The characters are still flat with little development. Several of the actors are quite talented as evidenced by other work they have done but this program is doing them no justice. Presenting more culturally diverse programming is usually a wonderful idea and welcome. But this one misses the mark completely.

Takeaways with Kirk Cameron
(2021)

Enlightening
I am new to this program in late 2023 and now 2024. I have found so many interesting guests, most of whom I do not know, and I've learned a great deal. I've bought books authored by some of the guests, or began following them on social media. The episode I saw today focused on disability of a child and Joni who is in her 70's. It was so encouraging that in spite of challenges, both families have done amazing things for others. One mom with the differently abled child has written a book to help other parents. And the other woman runs a global organization to get wheelchairs to needy all over the world. Both see that they do have a purpose and the follow it full force.

No Way Out
(1950)

Shocking and unexpected - 2024
I watched this film after stumbling upon it on Movies! I was not prepared for the incredible story line although sadly very likely it was based on truth. Poitier was only 23 when this was released and it was his second film. It must have been clear to all involved the talent they were witnessing. Widmark displayed as much hatred and evil as I've seen in a long time. There are several supporting cast members, some uncredited, who raise the tension and understandable desire for payback. One is a young Ossie Davis and his wife Ruby Dee. There is also a subtle score appropriate for the time period and mood. Prepare yourself for the shocking behavior of extremely prejudiced and nasty men and women.

Archie
(2023)

Like the book, Dyan's POV
Having read Dyan Cannon's book first, I was not as taken aback as many of the reviewers appear to be. The series is very much from Dyan's point of view and from her emotional stance. It portrays how she felt in various situations with Cary before and during their relationship. It's her story, not Cary's. Go into it with that understanding and you will enjoy the story for what it is. From his overcoming some traumatic situations in his youth, to using them to build a new character he could embody to protect himself, he learned how to cope with the expectations people had of him as an actor. He was not quite as successful though with coping with relationships, feeling very much like he always had to come on guard and leave before he could be abandoned. Bittersweet story that viewers may not appreciate if they have not read her book.

Chonda Pierce: Laughing in the Dark
(2015)

So Raw and Truthful and Serendipitous
I have been a fan of Chonda's work for a while. But within a couple of weeks of viewing this I heard a podcast where she shared how this came to be. She was approached about a making a documentary of her life on the road as a comedian. Many of the things that happened during the 3 years of filming were unexpected and as they occurred the focus of the documentary changed. Chonda's early life and her going through the loss of both of her sisters and surviving her father's mental health issues is well known, and she's always survived through her faith and comedy. Unfortunately as she became more famous and the travel became extensive her own marriage and children's lives suffered. In a way she was repeating what she'd learned.

But I don't know many people who have not had tragedy in their lives. And she continues to, through the help of therapy and medication, share her story to the benefit of 10s of 1000s of people.

She admits she wishes she'd chosen a different path, but the path of following Jesus, as those who make that choice know, is not easy. It's not meant to be. It's meant to be a sacrifice and it is.

Ghost Adventures: Quarantine
(2020)

Dybbuk Box Hoax
The whole dybbuk box hoax was created by a writer who built a story to sell a small wine bar on EBay. He's admitted to it repeatedly along this whole show ridiculous. I only just began watching episodes airing on Trvl since retirement provides way too much free time. After seeing the 4 Covid Shutdown episodes I am out. Even their silly comments about their masks and being spit on by possibly infected homeless people outside the gates make it clear that these guys are in researching how to make a buck via misinformation. What an embarrassment they are. One more reason to permanently cut out my cable TV.

Good Sam
(2019)

Good job Netflix
Finally a decent film by Netflix. Without preaching it is a story of good and evil. Evil in the form of a greedy NY politician and good in the form of a giving person who wants nothing in return. And a female lead who chases the truth and finds love in an unexpected place.

The 15:17 to Paris
(2018)

See it for yourself
I saw this film Before reading reviews and knew little about it other than it was a true story. I had no idea the 3 main characters were not played by actors. Considering that fact I was impressed even more. Clint delivers without too much violence which I abhor. God had his hand in this event and in the making of the film. There are so few people who are willing to lay down their lives for others and thankfully we meet 3 here.

I Can Only Imagine
(2018)

Imagine if there were more films like this.
Outstanding performances and story make this a must see film. The first weekend this film played in my home town it sold out and brought many people to the theatre who had not been in years. There is a huge underserved population who crave films with human actors without bloodshed and sex. There is enough of both already. Wake up Hollywood.

Beyond the Heavens
(2013)

Faith-based family film
I enjoyed this film. The story centers on a boy who begins to question many things in his life and family and whether God exists. The theme is universal in that nearly all childhood beliefs are shattered at some point either through real proof or circumstances that seem to disprove one belief or another.

There are several sub-plots utilized to flesh out the characters, many of whom either show no evidence of a belief in God, even some that attend church, or a belief without a practice of God's love. But they do believe in celebrating a strange occurrence that occurred in the small town in the recent past.

The acting is strong from several participants and the story moves along at a swift pace. The outcome demonstrates that intelligence and a mind for the sciences does not have to exist at the exclusion of faith in the unseen and difficult to prove.

Harry's Law
(2011)

NBC screws the pooch again.
When will TV writers learn that most people watch network TV to be entertained and not to be preached (read told who to like and dislike)? I can get that on so many other networks like CNN, or Comedy, or MSNBC, etc., etc. I was so disappointed by the cheap shots at real people in the middle of what I thought was a program based on fictional characters. I had looked forward to Kathy Bates' new venture, her dry sense of humor and perfect comedic timing. But I turned the premiere episode off midway. I will not watch it again. It's a shame because there are so few character-driven programs left. Everything is turning into reality TV whether the premise makes it evident or not. Shame on David Kelley. Clearly he is stretched too thin.

Touched by an Angel
(1994)

TBAA serves a purpose - as we all do
After watching another episode on Hallmark today I decided to check out the IMDb site for the series. I read several comments and realized that whether or not individuals 'liked' the show is not as relevant as the fact that individuals reacted to it, some very strongly one way or the other. I suspect the producers saw an opportunity in the 1990's to fulfill their own purpose by creating a forum for positive messages, provocative and thought-provoking story lines and by recognizing the place faith has for billions of people on earth. And I think they did just that. I only wish more people sought such a worthy purpose and fulfilled it. The world might be a better place.
