The Coroner
(2015)

Claire Goose forever!
Great to see the delectable Miss G. with her own show. Only seen the first 4 so far but make no mistake, she IS the show! Very gifted actress with a natural relaxed approach to her work, very believable as Jane. Some strange comments in a couple of the reviews here about her appearance. I see no reason, for instance, why a coroner should not be a glamorous woman. Bit of a personal comment made about the actress's hairdo? In my opinion she looks great from head to toe - to each his own I suppose. She had me with Mel Silver and I am chuffed for her that this series has gone to a second season. The series, obviously, is set at the seaside - might this mean that one day Jane will spend an afternoon at the beach in her bikini? One can hope!

ATM
(2012)

Pretty good thriller without a denouement.
This was an exciting thriller, yet, alas, without an ending. The young American actors were pretty decent. Alice Eve is irresistible. Frustrating to sit and watch and not be given a conclusion - some madman sitting in a lock-up scheming his next........what?? It was exciting and very scary. So what was he up to? Must have been a gadget by the movie makers to land Alice? Who wouldn't? Don't know, obviously, but these folks behind the camera need to finish the idea next time. Esoteric, to be kind. Does any actress have a smile with the luminosity of Alice Eve? Or the perfect teeth to go with?? Congrats to T.E and S.M.

Scott & Bailey: Loyalty
(2012)
Episode 1, Season 2

Super-Duper!
Wow! Series one was good and have just watched 2.1 on DVD. Terrific dialogue, very crisp, and brilliantly acted especially by Suranne and Lesley Sharp. Suranne is awesome. Great cast all round. The dialogue is so much better than the first series. Credit all round. Can't wait for the rest of this series. Spare a thought for Leyland O'Brien as the barman. Delightful vignette! This is a funny actor. Manchestough!! Must be so satisfying for all involved if this standard keeps up. An utter delight, loads of laughs and drama galore. Wish I could be part of this. Thank you you guys. Great Manchester weather when Suranne goes home with the shopping and the brother taps up. Piddling down as usual! Great performances from Miss Sharp, Suranne and Miss Bulmore. Finished watching the full series today. Nothing lightweight about this show. This was full-on material, no punches pulled here. Sprint chase by Suranne was amazing. I don't wish to comment on the content so as not to spoil. Great writing, direction, locations. Tough to improve on this now - please just keep going if possible. Sue and I watched all 8 eps in tandem with "The Slap". Both brilliant. What a night!!

Mildred Pierce
(2011)

Quite Brilliant.
An excellent drama. 5 episodes. Period detail flawless and captivating in its accuracy. An absorbing tale very well acted by a great ensemble cast who were all flawlessly placed by casting. I was sold on the first 4 episodes and couldn't wait to see the conclusion. Wow! Our lass from "Readin for beddin" was utterly brilliant. Miss Wood showed how very gifted she is as an actress. The two girls had three major scenes together and they were incredibly good, nay quite brilliant. Huge talents, seriously gifted performers. Speechless. Congratulations to everyone, Mr.Haynes well done. I am a bloke so I must admit to being huge fans of both actresses. It easy to fancy some girl on the screen I suppose, but that's not the thing here. A wonderful cast all around. Well done everyone. Well done Mr.Haynes bringing this cast together and thank you for the magic.

Luther
(2010)

Outstanding drama.
Any drama series that can boast such an outstanding cast stands a pretty good chance of success. Add an excellent story,a great script and the work of three fine directors and you have the formula for what has been a super series that had me on the edge of my seat for six weeks. (I have yet to see the second series.) Idris Elba is simply a powerhouse of an actor and was mesmerising to watch in this. Ruth Wilson and Indira Varma are each hugely talented and the material here was equal to two such gifted performers. There was no weakness anywhere in the cast as a whole and this was time well spent by all concerned and by those of us fortunate enough to have seen "Luther". In my view, this was the best opportunity Varma has been offered since "Rome" and she seized it with both hands! A fine actress, blessed with natural grace and fierce beauty, she needs more opportunities like this and I hope she gets them. Well done, everyone.

True Grit
(2010)

Sad effort in a hitherto great resume.
GWTW, On The Waterfront,Bridge on The River Kwai, Zhivago, Ben-Hur, The Family Way, Butch, The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy, Fargo, No Country for Old Men. What a quality list of superlative films.(My opinion.) Shame on the Coens for this mumbling mess. Pity the fine actors who fell for this con. Too much admiration for these guys apparently leads to "we can do wrong". Sympathy for the cast. Good fortune to the talented young ingenue, in fact well done actors all round. Spin the bottle again, lads. Be original, as you used to be. Don't do this again - it was awful. Even the effing horse died. That is when I finally gave up. Lovely cinematography when you guys played it for real. This mess was not worthy of your gifts. Go back to thinking for yourselves. We know you come from Minnesota but that is not your fault. (Joke.)

Tess of the D'Urbervilles
(2008)

Very fine production and a showcase for a perfect Tess.
What a really good production this is. Technically perfect and an excellent cast. Gemma Arterton is a super actress and for me this is the best performance of her career so far. If he could, I'm certain that Hardy would agree! Her newest release "Tamara Drewe" is taken from the Simmons comic strip which in turn was inspired by Hardy's "Far From The Madding Crowd". I read that a new version of "Crowd" is in the works - if they don't have Arterton as Bathsheba Everdene they are making a serious error in my opinion. She was born to play that role. I see that one of the reviews here is personally insulting to the actress. For shame!

The Final Destination
(2009)

Good fun plus Miss VanSanten.
I rented from Netflix and the disc included both versions. Unfortunately I don't have 3-D glasses so had to watch in 2-D and I found it to be pretty entertaining. Things keep flying at the camera lens which might have been annoying if I hadn't known why but, so long as you know, it doesn't spoil the fun. The young actors are pretty good with Krista Allen a stand-out in a nice cameo. The action keeps coming and it is consistently exciting. One or two of the scenes are weakly constructed but it keeps moving. I was most taken by the screen presence of Shantel VanSanten in the lead female role. She is extremely attractive with, I hope for her sake, a most promising career is store. I am looking forward to her performance in "Something Wicked". There is one shot of her from behind in just a tiny pair of pants which was decidedly gratuitous but oh my lord!

Train
(2008)

Pretty good thriller with some very nasty bits.
A little slow to start, with some holes in the plot progression but this film turns out to be very imaginative and very well directed with excellent make-up effects and some super characters. Unsurprisingly, this is Thora Birch's flick and she is great. The other actors are fair to good with the Bulgarian cast members outperforming the Americans. Once the movie gets going, the director takes over and this is very scary stuff. Wonderful last 40 minutes with Ms.Birch's character, Alex, leading us through a frightful time with nemesis coming to the villains in horrific fashion - just revenge for their own brutalities. Very much a la Alien but decidedly without the maternal sideshow. Wow! I've seen tons of these but this was a big surprise. No gratuitous sex or nudity and didn't need it either. Last part of this one guarantees sweaty palms - better watch out!! Gets you cheering Alex just like Ripley. Thora Birch is quite unprepossessing in the "extras" interview but she is anything but that when in character as Alex. Congrats to her and the director Gideon and the wonderful Bulgarian performers. The Bulgars are really, really good.

The Whistleblowers
(2007)

Great show! Indira Varma excellent but needs meatier roles after Rome!
This is really exciting and bang-up-to-today's headlines. The opening episode deals with "rendition" and is pretty breathtaking. Both leads are excellent actors with good cvs and classical training and both have shown great versatility during their careers thus far. Perhaps Richard Coyle is best known for his great comic turn in "Coupling" and he is really good here in a very different role. It's nice to see Indira Varma follow up her brilliant performance as Niobe in "Rome" with a leading role in this excellent thriller series. In my opinion she is quite fearless as an actor and both her and Coyle show considerable skill as they lead us through one thrilling situation after another, their characters interacting splendidly. Miss Varma's mesmerising beauty has been buttoned down somewhat for her Alisha character, very much a contrast to her smouldering interpretation of Niobe as she practically melted down the screen in "Rome"! A fine actor and probably the most classically beautiful woman currently on our screens. Casting directors and producers please keep her busy!
