Silent House
(2011)

Could have been worse, surprisingly wasn't.
This film could have possibly garnered a higher score from be but certain outside factors unfortunately made watching it a chore. First, ticket prices are outrageous if one's unfortunate to not make the matinée. Second, I'm not sure why this generation's movie goers are incapable of WATCHING a film. You spend nearly thirty bucks just to waste it on tinkering with your iphone or having a conversation about your iphone. (Mind you this is coming from someone in their early twenties not a bitter old man).

Sadly, those factors I hate to admit (particularly the latter) affected my experience with this movie.

That aside, I found the film refreshing. The camera angles were unique and gave a more personal look to Olsen's character without getting too Blair Witch cheesy. Olsen herself was a great actress. Her reactions were genuine and not over the top. A lot of her expressions and scares are realistic.

The scares are mostly jumpy, a lot contrived but meh what can you do. Most horror films aren't without a few of those. I thought the car and Polaroid scenes were the best.

The symbolism towards the end was pretty cool. I won't spoil anything here.

The ending was lackluster. I'm noticing a trend in the horror genre among potentially great movies that just fall flat in the conclusion. It's really frustrating sitting there thinking, "wow this is going to be great. I can't wait to see how this....oh." Certain things weren't needed such as her alter-ego. It was easy to tell by the end what was happening, there was no need to stick some random character in to explain it. I thought that was overkill and ruined what should have been a sickeningly twisted ending.

Overall I liked Silent House. It brought some new things to the table and its nice to see that it strived to have a little depth to it despite falling a little short. Maybe not worth the full price but matinée I definitely recommend (hopefully the morning crowd will be better).

True Blood
(2008)

It's a comedy...right? (spoiler)
When I first watched the show, the first few episodes seemed promising. Bill Compton introduced himself as the stereotypical "mysterious" vampire and Sookie presented herself as an independent woman. However, the show went downhill from here and the once interesting characters are as entertaining as a cardboard box.

As the story progresses the main characters lose their original personalities, along with their acting abilities. By episode 5, Bill's furrowed eyebrows are so low that his face just consists of a forehead. Sookie, or rather the actress, is even more dead than her vampire lover. All these tragic events are surrounding her and she only reacts to how enjoyable it was losing her virginity. Personally, I think they made the main characters sleep with each other too early in the show. The way they teased each other was something that had me hooked and could easily be toyed with a bit more. As soon as Sookie loses it she struts around like a total ditz, only thinking of Bill's libido and the size of his appendage. Bill also loses his debonair attitude and well, he just gets plain silly. His actions are never really explained except he does it for Sookie. Why? Their love for each other is never delved into, if there is any love. So far it just seems to be sex that is the core of their relationship.

Yeah, yeah, vampires usually equal sex but come on. Every five seconds I see some sort of humping going on. It wasn't that much of a surprise, since HBO always tries to pass of a soft core porno as a decent TV show. Bill popping out of the dirt and just getting it on with Sookie with no reason what's so ever? I laughed so hard I almost peed myself.

The plot is just a stream of consciousness. The characters never go into detail about anything. All the events that happen are usually left unexplained. The only thing that is constant is the sex.

The only thing I can say that I do like are the minor characters. Tara and her drunk mother are far more interesting than the major characters. The only reason why I continue to watch the show is for the development of the minor characters.

Minus the sex and the main characters the show would be much more worthwhile.

What?
This movie was like Days of Our Lives meets the Flintstones. The acting and actors were questionable as well as the ethnicity. As children they have tanned colored skin and then as adults they look like white Abercrombie models (all the warriors' boobs kept jiggling). Geologically it didn't make any sense. They seem to be the only Caucasian tribe amongst Africans and Egyptians. Not only that but it would make much more sense to have the protagonist's tribe to speak a different dialect than English. That's probably just me but it just seemed strange that everyone else spoke in subtitles. The CG looked like something out of a video game, it even skipped at one point! The saber tooth and other animals were comical. The plot lacking. The costumes and make-up was about the only thing interesting. Although the villain was kinda cool until he was miraculously stabbed with a spear from a mile away (didn't see that coming). I think the worst was Camilla Belle's acting and how she just seemed so out of place. I was waiting for the phone to ring throughout the movie. So yeah, that was a wasted two hours of my life.
