The Legend of Hercules
(2014)

The problem
This is probably why we do not see many quality swords and sandals flicks, most Hollywood producers are worried about the "badassness" of the film rather than a quality experience. Unfortunately, the drawing rooms are most likely filled with ideas about actors in costume jumping in slow motion to attack the bad guy and other senseless special effects a la Transformers.

I guess what I am saying is that newer technology and more special effects are not always a good thing, specially with a swords and sandals movie, Hollywood will continue losing money on movie tickets because they are missing the point, sometimes less is more.

This movie really was awful, I hope The Rock's Thracian Wars will give us a more realistic feel of what a Hercules movie should be.

Gymkata
(1985)

A gem of my childhood
I remember watching this on a rainy night back when I was a little boy in Guadalajara, Mexico. I started watching it a few minutes after it started, I was channel surfing while making me a cold glass of chocolate-milk and getting ready to have me some strawberry glassed cookies.

I was about ten or eleven years old, before I knew it my mouth was wide open and I was submerged into the movie. The fights seemed so violent, I felt supportive of the tiny American competitor and it was turning into one of those magical and rainy movie nights.

I am one of those "dudes" that rent this movie often, although it is not a gem of cinematography I still enjoy the violence and craziness of the movie. My favorite part has to be "the village of the damn", if you have seen the movie you know what I am talking about. I remember having nightmares about that place, I wouldn't mind having to go thru it as long as I have a AK-47. If you have not seen it I recommend it, just don't expect a blockbuster.

La sonrisa de la Virgen
(1958)

Regardless of nationality, a great film.
This is truly a gem in Mexican film making. Maria Gracia captures our sympathy since the opening credits, the movie can be too tender at times but it does not make it unreal. The fairy-tale like environment, music and script make this a fun and reassuring family film.

This movie is about a little girl that lost her parents and is being raised by her grandmother and her caretaker, a middle age man that also watches the old lady's poor farm.

Marita, as the little girl is named, does not have a care in the world. She loves collecting critters that make everyone else disgusted, this just shows her love for life. Her faith and love for her grandmother and friend take her on an adventure that touches the heart and make you feel good even a few hours after the television is turned off.

A fun family film
First of all, I actually watched the movie... Unlike the many haters bashing on it and giving it a 1.

It is not a masterpiece by any means, it has it's good things and it's flaws as well. I thought the characters were good and the story was simple yet effective.

If you want to spend a fun 2 hours at the movies now that all other movies are not worth your 9 dollars, go and watch this fun family film with your kids. I took my wife and my daughter and we all had a great time.

Don't believe all the negativity coming from some posters around here, like I said before, don't expect an Oscar winner but I bet you will have a nice time at the movies like Walt Disney intended more than 50 years ago.

¡Tintorera!
(1977)

Good shark movie
First of all, I don't understand why any movie made in Mexico gets this "bad, cheesy, laughable" comments. I have watched this movie several times and it's better than the killer shark movies produced now-a-days by the Sci-Fi channel.

The plot is simple yet effective, the acting is what you would expect from a 70's movie. The shark attacks (specially the one at night next to the boat with a REAL shark) are really believable, it achieves it's goal of scaring the crowd in my personal point of view.

The only thing I didn't like was the excessive nudity, although it keeps it groovy to say the least. A good Saturday night pop corn flick if you have no plans to go out or if you just want to have a good time while cuddling in the couch.

La ley del monte
(1976)

Vicente is as good an actor as is her is a singer
I am a big fan of Vicente Fernandez both as an actor as well as his singing. I probably have watched all his movies and La ley del Monte as well as El Arracadas might be the best ones. La ley del Monte is a compilation of feelings and you can almost feel the character's suffering. It begins as a love story set in the Mexican Revolution years and it ends as something comparable to the best Novela (Mexican soap). Every time I watch it, which is often, I get the chills at the end when Vicente shows up in the middle of the party and the Mariachis start playing the song "La Ley Del Monte". This scene is intense and you can see the love in his eyes as he's crying while singing to his beloved. He then goes to fight after saying goodbye to his mentor who is also the town's priest, and he goes off to fight only to have a spectacular and breath taking death in a short yet amusing battle against the soldiers.

Worth watching.

El arracadas
(1978)

Great 70's action movie
I watched this movie when I was a boy with my dad on TV back in the 80's, I liked it but I really didn't quite enjoy it. I bought the DVD 4 months ago and it knocked me out of my socks. This movie is so intense both in the action and the romance as well. I think Vicente Fernandez as the arracadas could be the Mexican version of Scarface, seriously. This guy was amazing and his performance was as good as i have ever seen in an action movie.

This is an action/western movie that will keep you watching until the end, there is some intense violence and some of the shooting scenes are good even for this age specially the bullets hitting the clothes and the blood coming out in a very realistic way as well as some mild nudity(not for young kids).

Overall this is a movie that if it came out on TV with English subtitles, I am sure arracadas face would be on lots of t-shirts.
